Microplastic in an Arid Region: Identification, Quantification and Characterization on and Alongside Roads in Al Ain, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

Microplastic content was analyzed in road dust, soils alongside roads and stormwater run-offs in Al Ain City, Abu Dhabi. Apart from tire wear material, fibers and degradation products of meso- and macroplastics such as plastic bags and plastic bottle tops were found to be the most dominant plastic microparticles. Speed bumps and artificial turf/lawns were also evaluated as potential sources of microplastics on and alongside roads. It was found that in arid regions Aeolian transport of microplastics may be more important than transport by water.

焊接在汽车、航空航天、机器人、建筑等行业具有重要的作用。这些行业常用非焊接方法制造很多铝合金零部件或系统。然而,由于不可热处理合金的存在、孔隙、凝固和熔融裂纹等因素,铝合金的熔焊具有挑战性。许多制造商采用传统的空气搅拌摩擦焊(FSW)焊接合金和异质材料,也有许多研究报道关于该传统FSW技术在焊接金属和聚合物材料,尤其是铝合金和铝基复合材料方面的缺点。近年来,为了克服传统FSW技术焊接铝合金的缺点,开发出很多其他FSW技术,例如水下搅拌摩擦焊(UFSW)和振动搅拌摩擦焊(VFSW)等。本文综述了近年来铝合金及铝基复合材料(AlMMCs)搅拌摩擦焊接工艺的研究进展,讨论了传统的FSW技术和最先进的FSW工艺参数对铝合金和铝基复合材料焊接质量和强度的影响,并比较了每种方法的优缺点。VFSW在能源效率和经济成本方面具有优势,并可根据应用情况进行多种改进,是焊接铝接头的一种可行的选择。然而,目前对Al MMCs搅拌摩擦焊的研究明显较少,这应给予足够的关注。

Analysis of the Solid Contents of Toothpastes Available in UAE (United Arab Emirates) Markets

In order to find out whether any toothpastes commercially available in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) carry microplastic content in form of plastic microbeads, the filterable solid contents of 31 toothpastes from UAE markets and 2 toothpastes imported from Syria were analyzed. FT-IR studies of the solids revealed that the major solid components were hydrated silica and calcium carbonate, where the individual toothpaste product exhibited either one or the other as the dominant constituent. Titrimetric analysis of the alkalinity of the ash of the toothpastes was carried out. The solids, ashed at 600°C were subjected to FT-IR and EDS (energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopic) analysis. The ash of some of the products was shown to have TiO2 and Ca3 (PO4)2 as minor components. Mostly organic dyes were used as colorants;however, iron oxide (Fe2O3) was also found. Importantly, none of the toothpastes carried any solid microplastic particles. Only 3 toothpastes carried microbeads at all, which were made of either silica or microcrystalline cellulose. This finding indicates that toothpastes, at least in the UAE, are no longer a significant source of microplastic in the environment. The results were compared to a toothpaste bought through the internet with a formulation from 2014, which exhibited polythene microplastic at 1.31 ± 0.39 w% of the filterable solid content.

Joint Optimal Power Source Sizing and Data Collection Trip Planning for Advanced Metering Infrastructure Enabled by Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

The use of unmanned aerial vehicles(UAVs) in the collection of data from wireless devices, sensor nodes, and the Internet of Things(IoT) devices has recently received significant attention. In this paper, we investigate the data collection process from a set of smart meters in advanced metering infrastructure(AMI) enabled by UAVs. The objective is to minimize the total annual cost of the electric utility by jointly optimizing the number of UAVs, their power source sizing, the charging locations as well as the data collection trip planning. This is achieved while considering the energy budgets of batteries of UAVs and the required amount of collected data. The problem is formulated as a mixed-integer nonlinear programming(MINLP), which is decoupled into two sub-problems where a candidate UAV and a number of buildings are first grouped into trips via genetic algorithms(GAs), and then the optimum trip path is found using a traveling salesman problem(TSP) branch and bound algorithm. Simulation results show that the battery capacity or the number of UAVs increases as the coverage area or the density increases.

Hydrological Modelling of Sidi Jabeur Watershed (Morocco) Using Spatially Distributed Model ATHYS

The objective of this study is to model the hydrology in the Sidi Jabeur basin, located in Bouregreg watershed at the north-central of Morocco, using the spatially distributed model (ATHYS) in order to understand and determine the different watershed hydrological processes. The study requires the collection of a series of data as inputs models namely rainfall data, water quantity, soil occupation, digital terrain model and requires also a calibration in order to evaluate the model in validation phase. The simulation results are obtained from the validation phase aim to replicate the operation of Sidi Jabeur watershed, and present a suitable adjustment perspective of the observed hydrograph. These results show that the objective is achieved and a model distributed like ATHYS plays an effective role in improving the efficiency and presents a high advantage in anticipation of runoff volume.

This study aims to compare the performance of two hydrological models, conceptual (HEC-HMS) and spatial (ATHYS) on the Aguibat Ezziar watershed. The comparative analysis is based on the performances of simulation in terms of Nash-Sutcliffe and RSR. The study requires the collection of a series of data as inputs models namely rainfall data, water quantity, soil occupation, DTM and requires also a calibration in order to evaluate these models in validation phase. The simulation results were obtained from the validation phase aiming to replicate the operation of watershed Aguibat Ezziar, and present a suitable adjustment perspective of the observed hydrograph. These results show that the objective is achieved and a model distributed like ATHYS plays an effective role to improve the efficiency and present a high advantage in anticipation of runoff volume comparing with other models.

Feasibility of Upfront Debulking Surgery versus Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy Followed by Interval Debulking Surgery for Advanced Ovarian Cancer

Background: Inappropriately ovarian cancer cannot be detected until an advanced stage. Radical debulking surgery is considered the cornerstone in the management of advanced ovarian cancer pointing to complete tumor resolution. Unless optimal debulking cannot be achieved, these patients gain little benefit from surgery. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) has been recommended as a novel therapeutic modality to a diversity of malignant tumors when the disease is not willing to optimal surgical resection at the time of diagnosis or the patient who unfit for aggressive debulking surgery. The purpose of this study is to compare survival in the patient with advanced ovarian cancer (stage III/IV) underwent primary debulking surgery followed by adjuvant chemotherapy (PDS-ACTR) to those who received neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by interval debulking surgery (NACT-IDS). Results: Neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT-IDS) showed significant complete cytoreduction and decreased in surgical morbidity in comparison to primary debulking surgery (PDS-ACTR). NACT-IDS showed significant improvement in progression-free survival (P-value 0.002) and overall survival (P-value 0.03) in comparison to PDS-ACTR. Response to NACT and residual volume were the two independent prognostic factors for overall survival. Conclusion: NACT-IDS for advanced ovarian cancer (III/IV) resulted in higher frequency of complete resection with no residual tumor, less post-operative surgical morbidity and significant increase progression-free survival and overall survival. Both responses to NACT and residual tumor volume were the two independent prognostic factors for survival in ovarian cancer.
