The present researched topic was conceived from a senior design course for Civil Engineering students at CSUN (California State University), Northridge. In this work, experimental trials were performed and compared to establish theoretical values of the discharge coefficient. The discharge coefficient is a dimensionless number used to characterize the flow and pressure loss behavior of nozzles and orifices in fluid systems. A group of low-income undergraduate students with diverse backgrounds designed multiple 3D printed orifices where each 3D printed orifice had a specific shape. Utilizing the methods of technical problem solving, the undergraduates found experimental discharge coefficient values for the following orifices: borda, short-tubed, and sharp-edged. Implementing ethics of engineering practice and utilizing university resources, this study is a representation of the collaborative work of minorities and females that want to expand their knowledge within their respective discipline of Civil Engineering.

This paper attempts to resolve the reported contradiction in the literature about the characteristics of high-performance/cost-effective fenestration of residential buildings,particularly in hot *** considered issues are the window glazing property(ten commercial glazing types),facade orientation(four main orientations),window-to-wall ratio(WWR)(0.2–0.8),and solar shading overhangs and side-fins(nine shading conditions).The results of the simulated runs reveal that the glazing quality has a superior effect over the other fenestration parameters and controls their effect on the energy consumption of residential ***,using low-performance windows on buildings yields larger effects of WWR,facade orientation,and solar shading than high-performance *** the WWR increases from 0.2 to 0.8,the building energy consumption using the low-performance window increases 6.46 times than that using the highperformance *** best facade orientation is changed from north to south according to the glazing *** addition,the solar shading need is correlated as a function of a window-glazing property and *** cost analysis shows that the high-performance windows without solar shading are cost-effective as they have the largest net present cost compared to lowperformance windows with or without solar ***,replacing low-performance windows with high-performance ones,in an existing residential building,saves about 12.7 MWh of electricity and 11.05 tons of CO_(2) annually.

The surface of NiTi alloy was roughened by NaOH-HC1 treatment, and the Ta-containing TiO2 films were coated on the pretreated NiTi alloy by the sol-gel method. Thermal analyses indicate that the evaporation temperature of the organics decreases with the addition of tantalum ethoxide in the TiO2 sol, but the crystallization temperature of anatase increases. The NaOH-HC1 pre- treatment improves the film integrity, but cracks still form in the films at high Ta contents （_〉20 %, molar ratio） owing to the increasing film thickness. X-ray diffraction （XRD） confirms that the addition of Ta suppresses the crystalli- zation of anatase. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy （XPS） reveals that Ta exists as Ta2Os in the film. With the increase of Ta content, the hydrophilic conversion of the films under UV illumination is impeded, but their corrosion resistance in 0.9 % NaC1 solution increases, tested by the potentiodynamic polarization. The coating samples have acceptable hemolysis ratios for biomaterials （〈5）. The introduction of Ta improves the anti-aggregating function of the TiO2 film in the platelet adhesion test.

In this study, the characteristics of Graphite/Epoxy Composites (GECs) are evaluated from mechanical perspectives. Different weight percentages of graphite were used (0 - 7 wt%) for tensile and hardness experiments. Then the findings were discussed to ascertain the optimum mixing ratio of the graphite with the epoxy. The primary finding of this study is that the graphite weight fraction has a substantial impact on the composites’ mechanical performance. At a low percentage (1 wt%), the graphite has little influence on the tensile behaviour. An intermediate weight percentage of the graphite is considered optimum for mechanical performance in the epoxy composites as it slightly reduces the tensile properties and significantly improves the hardness. Micrographs of the fractured surface of specimens showed many signs that clearly explained why fractures had occurred. For instance, when graphite/epoxy composite contained a low proportion of graphite, the cleavage failure was very easy to observe because there was no sign of aggregation or the detachment of fillers.

Recent advancements of the intelligent transportation system(ITS)provide an effective way of improving the overall efficiency of the energy management strategy(EMSs)for autonomous vehicles(AVs).The use of AVs possesses many advantages such as congestion control,accident prevention,and ***,energy management and traffic flow prediction(TFP)still remains a challenging problem in *** complexity and uncertainties of driving situations adequately affect the outcome of the designed *** this view,this paper presents novel sustainable energy management with traffic flow prediction strategy(SEM-TPS)for *** SEM-TPS technique applies type II fuzzy logic system(T2FLS)energy management scheme to accomplish the desired engine torque based on distinct *** addition,the membership functions of the T2FLS scheme are chosen optimally using the barnacles mating optimizer(BMO).For accurate TFP,the bidirectional gated recurrent neural network(Bi-GRNN)model is used in AVs.A comprehensive experimental validation process is performed and the results are inspected with respect to several evaluation *** experimental outcomes highlighted the supreme performance of the SEM-TPS technique over the recent state of art approaches.

Ta-containing TiO2 films with Ta contents of 5%, 20%, 33% （mole fraction） were sol-gel coated on the surface roughened Ti6AI4V alloy by dip coating method for biomedical applications. The Ta-TiO2 films on 1.5 mol/L NaOH-HCI pretreated substrate are adherent, but there are cracks for the sample with 33% Ta. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results show that Ti and Ta exist as TiP2 and Ta205 in the film, and A1 element is not detectable. X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering analyses reveal that the addition of Ta decreases crystallization of the films. Potentiodynamic polarization test in a Ca-free Hank＇s balanced solution demonstrates that the coating samples markedly improve the corrosion resistance compared with the polished sample. The addition of Ta impedes UV light-induced hydrophilic conversion of the coating samples. The sample with 20% Ta has enough film integrity and hydrophilic conversion rate, and is expected to possess good biological properties.

The developments of multi-core systems(MCS)have considerably improved the existing technologies in thefield of computer *** MCS comprises several processors that are heterogeneous for resource capacities,working environments,topologies,and so *** existing multi-core technology unlocks additional research opportunities for energy minimization by the use of effective task *** the same time,the task scheduling process is yet to be explored in the multi-core *** paper presents a new hybrid genetic algorithm(GA)with a krill herd(KH)based energy-efficient scheduling techni-que for multi-core systems(GAKH-SMCS).The goal of the GAKH-SMCS tech-nique is to derive scheduling tasks in such a way to achieve faster completion time and minimum energy *** GAKH-SMCS model involves a multi-objectivefitness function using four parameters such as makespan,processor utilization,speedup,and energy consumption to schedule tasks *** performance of the GAKH-SMCS model has been validated against two datasets namely random dataset and benchmark *** experimental outcome ensured the effectiveness of the GAKH-SMCS model interms of makespan,pro-cessor utilization,speedup,and energy *** overall simulation results depicted that the presented GAKH-SMCS model achieves energy effi-ciency by optimal task scheduling process in MCS.

Objective:To develop HPTLC fingerprint profile of anti-inflammatory active extract fractions of Tribulus terrestris(family Zygophyllaceae).Methods:The anti-inflammatory activity was tested for the methanol and its fractions(chloroform,ethyl acetate,n-butanol and aqueous)and chloroform extract of Tribulus terrestris(aerial parts)by injecting different groups of rats(6 each)with carrageenan in hind paw and measuring the edema volume before and 1,2 and 3 h after carrageenan *** group received saline *** extracts treatment was injected *** doses of 200 mg/kg 1 h before carrageenan ***(30 mg/kg)was used as *** studies were carried out using CAMAG HPTLC system equipped with Linomat IV *** scanner *** 3,CAMAG ADC 2 and WIN CATS-4 software for the active fractions of chloroform fraction of methanol ***:The methanol extract showed good antiedematous effect with percentage of inhibition more than 72%,indicating its ability to inhibit the inflammatory *** methanol extract was re-dissolved in 100 mL of distilled water and fractionated with chloroform,ethyl acetate and *** four fractions(chloroform,ethyl acetate,n-butanol and aqueous)were subjected to anti-inflammatory *** fraction showed good anti-inflammatory activity at dose of 200 mg/*** fraction was then subjected to normal phase silica gel column chromatography and eluted with petroleum ether-chloroform,chloroform-ethyl acetate mixtures of increasing polarity which produced 15 fractions(F1-F15).Only fractions F1,F2,F4,F5,F7,F9,F11 and F14 were found to be active,hence these were analyzed with HPTLC to develop their finger print *** fractions showed different spots with different R_f ***:The different chloroform fractions F1,F2,F4,F5,F7,F9,F11 and F14 revealed 4,7,7,8,9,7,7 and 6 major spots,*** results obtained in this experiment strongly support and vali
