Evaluation of Antibacterial and Sy.ergistic/Antagonistic Effect of Some Medicinal Plants Extracted by.Microwave and Conventional Methods

The purpose of the study.was to evaluate the efficiency.of the microwave (MW) extraction method by.comparing it with a conventional method through evaluation of antimicrobial and sy.ergism/antagonism activity.of each aquatic and ethanolic extracts samples, which were extracted from the dried plants (Ficus sy.omorus leaves, Lawsonia inermis leaves and Gly.errhiza glabra Linn.). Nine samples of each plant for both solvents were irradiated with MW at several power outputs (180 w, 360 w, and 540 w) in several interval times (1, 2 and 3 minutes). The antibacterial activities of extracts and the sy.ergistic effect between plants and antibiotics were evaluated using disk diffusion method against clinical isolated Staphy.ococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The result revealed that the inhibition zone for more than 50% using aquatic and ethanolic samples results (extracted in two minutes and MW power 180 w) had shown the optimum extract and better antibiotic activity.for each plant. Also, the results of ethanolic extracts used against selected microorganisms showed antimicrobial and sy.ergistic effect with most antibiotics better than aquatic extracts. Our results indicate the possibility.of using MW apparatus as an extractor to obtain bioactive compounds from plants and thus used in the treatment of bacterial infections, and some results of this study.were encouraging. However, the antagonistic reactions of some extracts with some antibiotics and their use in combination should be further studied for in vitro activities. It is clearly.a need to be furthermore evaluated, to identify.the effective components, the mode of action and the possible toxic effect in-vivo of these ingredients.

Hepatic portal venous gas (HPVG), an ominous radiologic sign, is associated in some cases with a severe underly.ng abdominal disease requiring urgent operative intervention. HPVG has been reported with increasing frequency.in medical literature and usually.accompanies severe or lethal conditions. The diagnosis of HPVG is usually.made by.plain abdominal radiography. sonography. color Doppler flow imaging or computed tomography.(CT) scan. Currently. the increased use of CT scan and ultrasound in the inpatient setting allows early.and highly.sensitive detection of such severe illnesses and also the recognition of an increasing number of benign and non-life threatening causes of HPVG. HPVG is not by.itself a surgical indication and the treatment depends mainly.on the underly.ng disease. The prognosis is related to the pathology.itself and is not influenced by.the presence of HPVG. Based on a review of the literature, we discuss in this paper the pathophy.iology. risk factors, radiographic findings, management, and prognosis of pathologies associated with HPVG.

Isolation, Molecular Identification and under Lab Evaluation of the Entomopathogenic Fungi M. anisopliaeand B. bassianaagainst the Red Palm Weevil R. ferrugineusin Gaza Strip

Plant diseases generate challenging problems in commercial, agriculture and pose real economic threats to both conventional and organic farming sy.tems. The red palm weevil (Rhy.chophorus ferrugineus) (RPW) is one of the most destructive pests of palms in the world. Nowaday., control methods revolve around treatments based on chemicals, biotechnological sy.tems using semi-chemicals or the development of the sterile insect technique (hardly.sustainable at this time) and biological control. Biological control as the use of natural microorganisms, extracted products from microorganisms or genetically.improved to resist or eliminate of pathogens. Our aim was to evaluate the entomopathogenicity.of indigenous Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium anisopliae obtained in Gaza strip against larvae and adults of R. ferrugineus in order to identify.indigenous strains potentially.suitable for Red Palm Weevil biological control. B. bassiana & M. anisopliae were isolated from larvae and adult dead of RPW from different position of Gaza strip. Morphological analy.is of the isolated fungi and molecular identification was determined using PCR technique. Also, the efficiency.of the isolated fungi were evaluated under lab conditions and optimized as a biological agent. On the anther hand, the ability.of treated RPW male to infect females is examined and calculated using Abbott's formula. Our results showed that the B. bassiana and M. anisopliae exhibited a good biological control agent against larvae and adults of RPW. The pathogenicity.of the two most virulent isolates and the toxicity.assay.on larvae showed a highest mortality.percentage nearly.to 100% by.6 day. after spray.ng the larvae with 3.4 × 108 spores/ml of B. bassiana. The mortality.percentage reaches to 90% after spray.ng the larvae with 3.6 × 108 spores/ml of M. anisopliae. The mortality.for the adults treated with pesticide arrives to 50% and the control group 10% at the same time. The results revealed that the infection of
