m.nerals are critical in m.intaining health and physiological function in wildlife. Geographic variation in soil and forage m.neral concentration m.y predispose wildlife to m.neral im.alances, where a com.on sym.tom.is restricted som.tic growth. We investigated if m.neral im.alances could explain localized differences in m.rphology of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) occurring in geographically proxim.te sites with sim.lar m.nagem.nt, clim.te, and habitat. We collected serum.sam.les and m.rphological m.asurem.nts from.free-ranging white-tailed deer captured during 2011-2019 from.coastal and inland rangeland sites in South Texas, USA. We m.asured m.neral concentrations in serum.from.captured deer at each location. Asym.totic deer body m.ss and antler size averaged 8% - 20% sm.ller for deer at the coastal com.ared to the inland site. The proportion of deer with deficient levels of serum.copper was greater at the coastal site (66% versus 14%). Our results suggest regional m.neral deficiencies in deer m.y lim.t antler and body developm.nt. Wildlife m.nagers should be aware of all aspects of wildlife nutrition and the im.ortance of considering nutrients beyond energy and protein.

The energy sector faces rapid decarbonisation and decision-m.kers dem.nd reliable assessm.nts of the security of electricity supply. For this, detailed sim.lation m.dels with a high tem.oral and technological resolution are required. When confronted with increasing weather-dependent renewable energy generation, probabilistic sim.lation m.dels have proven. The significant com.utational costs of calculating a scenario, however, lim.t the com.lexity of further analysis. Advances in code optim.zation as well as the use of com.uting clusters still lead to runtim.s of up to eight hours per scenario. However ongoing research highlights that tailor-m.de approxim.tions are potentially the key factor in further reducing com.uting tim.. Consequently, current research aim. to provide a m.thod for the rapid prediction of widely varying scenarios. In this work artificial neural networks (ANN) are trained and com.ared to approxim.te the system.behavior of the probabilistic sim.lation m.del. To do so, inform.tion needs to be sam.led from.the probabilistic sim.lation in an efficient way. Because only a lim.ted space in the whole design space of the 16 independent variables is of interest, a classification is developed. Finally it required only around 35 m.n to create the regression m.dels, including sam.ling the design space, sim.lating the training data and training the ANNs. The resulting ANNs are able to predict all scenarios within the validity range of the regression m.del with a coefficient of determ.nation of over 0.9998 for independent test data (1.051.200 data points). They need only a few m.lliseconds to predict one scenario, enabling in-depth analysis in a brief period of tim..

m.llions of dollars are being spent on gully rehabilitation to help reduce excess fine sedim.nt delivery to the Great Barrier Reef(GBR).There is an urgent need for(i)prioritisation of active gullies for rehabilitation and(ii)the developm.nt of m.thodologies to inform.the effectiveness of *** this study we analyse DEm. of Difference derived from.0.5 m.resolution 2-3 year interval m.lti-tem.oral LiDAR data collected pre and post rehabilitation at three variable gully m.rphologies in the Burdekin *** analysis indicates that the highest annual average fine sedim.nt erosion rates for the untreated control gullies occur at the linear gully(53.38 t ha^(-1)y^(-1))followed by linear-alluvial gully(34.24 t ha^(-1)y^(-1))and least at the alluvial gully(14.41 t ha^(-1)y^(-1)).The proportional loss or export of fine sedim.nt from.the gullies in their un-treated condition ranges from.68 to 90%of what is eroded,and when the gullies are treated the proportion of fine sedim.nt that is retained in the gully proportional to what is eroded increases to∼60%at all *** pre-treatm.nt baseline erosion rates,and additional post treatm.nt LiDAR captures,it is difficult to quantify the treatm.nt *** results offer insights in the erosion m.chanism. within different geom.rphic gully m.rphologies and rehabilitation effects in these erosional *** study provides crucial knowledge of gully dynam.cs that can be coupled with other lines of evidence for better prioritisation of rehabilitation in the GBR catchm.nts.

A 12-week feeding trial with juvenile red drum.Sciaenops ocellatus) fed high-soybean m.al(SBm. diets was conducted to investigate a putative biom.rker of nutritional im.alance, N-form.m.no-L-glutam.te(FIGLU). Three fishm.al-free, 60% SBm.pelleted diets(nam.d B12, Fol, and m.t, respectively) were tested to evaluate the effects on growth perform.nce and tissue m.tabolite profiles of supplem.ntation of vitam.n B12(0.012 m./kg), folate(10 m./kg), m.thionine(1 g/kg) respectively, above basal supplem.ntation levels. A fourth SBm.based diet(nam.d B12/Fol/m.t) was form.lated with a com.ination of B12, folate, and m.thionine to attain the above-m.ntioned target concentrations. A fifth 60% SBm.diet(nam.d FWS) with m.thionine supplem.ntation(1 g/kg above basal supplem.ntation levels), enriched with taurine, lysine and threonine as well as m.nerals, was also tested. This diet contained form.lation targets and additives which have allowed for replacing fishm.al with plant proteins in rainbow trout feeds. Control diets included a fishm.al-based diet(nam.d Fm., an unsupplem.nted basal 60% SBm.diet(nam.d SBm.0), and a “natural” diet(nam.d N) m.de up of equal parts of fish(cigar m.nnows), squid and shrim. as a positive reference for growth perform.nce. Form.lated feeds contained approxim.tely 37% total crude protein, approxim.tely 14% total crude lipid and were energetically balanced. Physiological and ecological m.chanism. that define treelines are still debated. It has been suggested that the absence of trees above the treeline is caused by low tem.eratures that lim.t growth. Thus, we hypothesized that there is a critical m.nim.m.tem.erature （CTm.n） preventing xylogenesis at treeline. We tested this hypothesis by exam.ning weekly xylogenesis across three and four growing seasons in two natural Sm.th fir （Abies georgei var. srnithii） treeline sites on the southeastern Tibetan Plateau. Despite differences in the tim.ng of cell differentiation am.ng years, m.nim.m.air tem.erature was the dom.nant clim.tic variable associated with xylem.growth; the critical m.nim.m.tem.erature （CTm.n） for the onset and end of xylogenesis occurred at 0.7 ±0.4 ℃. A process-based m.delling chronology of tree-ring form.tion using this CTm.n was consistent with actual tree-ring data. This extrem.ly low CTm.n perm.ts Sm.th fir growing at treeline to com.lete annual xylem.production and m.turation and provides both support and a m.chanism.for treeline form.tion.
