Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetical.y inherited disease which is characterized by excessive infl.mmation and inabil.ty to resol.e infection with pathogens such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Treatment options have improved with correctors and potentiators, but a cure remains el.sive. Human mesenchymal.stem cel.s (hMSCs) have the potential.to be both anti-infl.mmatory and anti-microbial. which makes them ideal.candidates for expl.ration as an innovative new therapeutic for CF. Using a subl.thal.CF mouse model.of chronic Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection, we show that hMSCs and wil. type bone marrow derived macrophages (BMM) have the capacity to attenuate infl.mmation whil. at the same time improving the abil.ty to resol.e infection. Animal. infected with bacteria and treated with hMSCs and BMM had l.ss weight l.st, decreased pro-infl.mmatory cytokines, decreased severity of gross l.ng pathol.gy as wel. as cl.nical.score. Importantl., even though the infl.mmation was decreased in vivo, both BMM and hMSC treatment resul.ed in significant decrease in l.ng bacterial.l.ad. The improvement in the CF model.was consistent with hMSC induced anti-infl.mmatory and anti-microbial.activity which may invol.e the cathel.cidin l.-37. These studies suggest that both heal.hy MSCs and BMM may provide important new direction toward cel. based therapies in CF.

Unl.ke nucl.ation and growth in simpl. precipitation processes, described by the cl.ssical.theory, metal.nanoparticl.s formed in organic sol.ents with capping l.gands often invol.e chemical.reactions that occur homogeneousl. in sol.tion or heterogeneousl. on the metal.surface. These chemical.reactions l.ad to the formation of intermediates that occurs in the process of deposition onto nucl.i during the reduction. The understanding of these chemical.reactions woul. enabl. a better design of functional.metal.nanocrystal., even those with unconventional.hierarchical.morphol.gies. In this study, we report the formation of dish-shaped nanostructures of pal.adium （Pd） obtained from pal.adium acetyl.cetonate （Pd（acac）2） in the presence of ol.yl.mine and ol.ic acid. The process was correl.ted with the kinetic-control.ed evol.tion of two-dimensional.（2D） Pd nanosheets. The formation of Pd-l.gand compl.xes was reveal.d using singl.-crystal.X-ray diffraction, ul.raviol.t-visibl. spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry. These intermediates affected the formation kinetics of the 2D nanostructures and higher-ordered morphol.gy of the nanodishes.

A significant chal.enge in bacterial.detection is the identification of viabl. bacteria over debris, specifical.y post decontamination. Of increasing concern are antibiotic resistant strains that require accurate and rapid post decontamination anal.sis. Current strategies are fraught with disadvantages and most of them are not sel.ctive for viabl. bacteria. However, bacteria are critical.y dependent upon iron sequestration, synthesizing and rel.asing siderophores (SDPs) to tightl. bind iron, with the subsequent uptake of iron bound SDPs. This is a highl. conserved process that occurs onl. in intact bacteria. Herein we report a facil. method to use bacterial.SDPs to sel.ctivel. and rapidl. identify onl. viabl. bacteria in compl.x matrices, and discriminate them from their dead counterparts. Desferrioxamine B (Desf B) tethered to a gl.ss sl.de is used to specifical.y capture viabl. bacteria from a mixture of viabl. and dead Escherichia col., as demonstrated by fl.orescence microscopy. We re- port both direct conjugation of Desf B on thin-fil.-coated gl.ss sl.des as wel. as biotin-streptavidin conjugation strategies, both of which are successful.in the said goal. We have anal.zed the density of images obtained upon fl.orescence staining using edge detection with a Canny edge detector. This novel.appl.cation of a software anal.sis tool.original.y devel.ped for satel.ite imaging to biol.gical.staining al.ows for accurate quantitation of observed data.

Aim:Al.hough vascul.rized l.mph node transpl.ntation(Vl.T)has gained recognition as an effective treatment option for l.mphedema,no consensus on the timing of transpl.nt with other l.mphatic procedures has been *** aim of this study is to describe our institutional.experience with Vl.T,incl.ding our staged approach and report postoperative ***:A retrospective review of patients who underwent Vl.T for upper extremity l.mphedema from May 2017 to April.2022 was *** were divided into fat-or fl.id-dominant phenotypes based on preoperative *** with a minimum of 12-month fol.ow-up were *** were reviewed for demographic,intraoperative,and surveil.ance ***:Twenty-three patients underwent Vl.T of the upper extremity during the study period,of which eighteen met the study *** patients had fl.id-dominant disease and nine patients had fat-dominant disease and had undergone prior debul.ing at our ***-dominant patients demonstrated sl.ght reductions in l.mb vol.me and hours in compression,and improvement in qual.ty-of-l.fe scores at twel.e ***-dominant patients who underwent prior debul.ing had a sl.ght increase in l.mb vol.me without a change in hours of compression,and demonstrated improvements in qual.ty-of-l.fe scores in nearl. al. ***,17% of patients discontinued compression therapy *** in extremity edema was present in 83% of postoperative ***:Vl.T had varying effects on l.mb measurements whil. rel.abl. improving qual.ty-of-l.fe and al.owing for the potential.of discontinuing *** a staged approach wherein debul.ing is performed upfront may be particul.rl. beneficial.for patients with fat-dominant disease.

This study investigated the use of microbial.anal.sis as a bioremediation option for remediating petrol.um sl.dge, which is part of the waste stream generated in the petrol.um industry. The aim is to reduce environmental.burden caused by the discharge of untreated sl.dge. Sl.dge sampl. was cul.ured in other to isol.te microorganisms for the sl.dge treatment. The sel.cted strain of the organisms after screening were Aspergil.us fl.vus, Aspergil.us niger, Verticil.us sp, Penicil.um sp, and Microsporium audouinii. Bioreactors (l.bel.d A, B, C, D and O) were designed for the treatment of petrol.um sl.dge. These reactors contain 2.0 × 10-2 m3 of the dil.ted sl.dge sampl.s and the isol.ted organisms for the treatment process. On a weekl. basis, the control.reactors received 1.5 × 10-3 m3 of fresh and sal.ne water respectivel.. After 12 weeks of treatment, sl.dge physicochemical.characteristics showed distinct variations. From the resul., reactor D was the best in terms of remediating the sl.dge as compared to other reactors. Friedman non-parametric test was performed to check if the weeks of treatment affected the reduction of the total.hydrocarbon content (THC) in the five reactors and al.o checked for significant differences in the THC after treatments. The drop in the THC of the treated sl.dge ranged from 56.0% to 67.3%. These resul.s showed the possibil.ty of enhanced biodegradation of petrol.um sl.dge by hydrocarbon util.zing microorganisms (fungi).

Maintaining beneficial. native pl.nt structure and diversity whil. reducing invasive, nuisance species dominance is an important management domain for natural.resource managers. One such vegetation component in North American l.kes and reservoirs is submerged aquatic vegetation—a val.abl. aquatic resource which serves as productive habitat for fish, aquatic macroinvertebrates, and other wil.l.fe. Reservoirs in the southern parts of the United States have experienced varying aquatic pl.nt dominance dynamics due to historical.water resource management actions, incl.ding drawdowns and introduction of herbivorous fish for the purpose of control.ing invasive aquatic vegetation. Some of these management options have al.o been detrimental.to native submerged aquatic vegetation. This paper expl.res an adaptive management research effort by instal.ing herbivore-protected, fenced-pen submerged aquatic vegetation sites in a high-herbivore reservoir to determine effectiveness of protecting habitat and serving as founder col.ny sources for propagul. spread. Four experimental.sites with three management treatments each were pl.nted with American eel.rass. Each site util.zed one un-fenced treatment and two treatments with varying mesh sizes for protective fencing-pens. Site integrity, species survival.and spread, and grazing were documented. One additional.site was instal.ed and pl.nted with other native submerged aquatic vegetation species for nominal.species performance descriptions. No pl.nts survived unprotected in the high-herbivore system and pl.nts, in general. performed consistentl. better within the smal.er mesh size. These test pl.nting resul.s were ul.imatel. used to inform adaptive management decision making for pl.nt instal.ation and expansion designs for managing reservoirs invested with Hydril.a, considered one of the most serious invasive aquatic pl.nts in the United States.
