Non-timber forest products and their contribution to households income around Falgore Game Reserve in Kano, Nigeria

Introduction:In the recent decades,there has been growing interest in the contribution of non-timber forest products(NTFPs)to livelihoods,development,and poverty alleviation among the rural *** has been prompted by the fact that communities living adjacent to forest reserves rely to a great extent on the NTFPs for their livelihoods,and therefore any effort to conserve such resources should as a prerequisite understand how the host communities interact with ***:Multistage sampling technique was used for the study.A representative sample of 400 households was used to explore the utilization of NTFPs and their contribution to households’income in communities proximate to Falgore Game Reserve(FGR)in Kano State,*** statistics and logistic regression analysis were used to analyze and summarize the data ***:The findings reveal that communities proximate to FGR mostly rely on the reserve for firewood,medicinal herbs,fodder,and fruit nuts for household use and *** from NTFPs accounts for 20–60%of the total income of most(68%)of the sampled *** utilization of NTFPs was significantly influenced by age,sex,household size,main occupation,distance to forest and ***:The findings suggest that NTFPs play an important role in supporting livelihoods,and therefore provide an important safety net for households throughout the year particularly during periods of hardship occasioned by *** is suggested that stakeholders should prioritize technical and financial support programs on agricultural value addition and handcrafts that would promote off-farm income generating activities,in addition,provision of alternative domestic cooking energy such as biogas in communities proximate to FGR in order to reduce pressure relating to fuelwood gathering from the forest,this will help to improve forest resources quality.

Estimation of cost savings from participation of electric vehicles in vehicle to grid(V2G)schemes

The storage capacity of the batteries in an electric vehicle(EV)could be utilised to store electrical energy and give it back to the grid when needed by participating in vehicle to grid(V2G)*** participation could be a source of revenue for vehicle owners thus reducing the total charging cost of their EVs.A V2G simulator has been developed using MATLAB to find out the potential cost saving from participation of EVs in V2G schemes.A standard IEEE30 network has been modelled in the simulator which uses the MATPOWER engine to undertake power flow analysis.A novel control algorithm has been developed to take advantage of the difference between the selling and buying electricity prices by charging and discharging EVs at the appropriate *** scenarios are simulated to compare the total charging cost of EVs with or without the utilisation of V2G technology within the power system assuming a total of 5000 *** results of the simulation show that the applied control strategy with V2G is able to reduce the charging cost of EVs by 13.6%while satisfying the minimum requirement for state of charge(SoC)of the EV batteries to complete their next journey.

Fabrication of form stable NaCl-Al2O3 composite for thermal energy storage by cold sintering process

A form stable NaCl-Al2O3(50-50 wt-%)composite material for high temperature thermal energy storage was fabricated by cold sintering process,a process recently applied to the densification of ceramics at low temperature 300℃ under uniaxial pressure in the presence of small amount o f transient *** fabricated composite achieved as high as 98.65% of the theoretical *** NaCl-Al2O3 composite also retained the chloride salt without leakage after 30 heating-cooling cycles between 750℃-850℃ together with a holding period o f 24h at 850℃.X-ray diffraction measurements indicated congruent solubility o f the alumina in chloride salt,excellent compatibility o f NaCl with Al2O3,and chemical stability at high *** analysis by scanning electron microscope also showed limited grain growth,high density,uniform NaCl distribution and clear faceted composite structure without *** latent heat storage density o f 252.5J/g was obtained from simultaneous thermal *** strength test showed high sintered strength around 5 GPa after 50 *** composite was found to have fair mass losses due to ***,cold sintering process has the potential to be an efficient,safe and cost-effective strategy for the fabrication of high temperature thermal energy storage materials.

Combined stochastic and discrete simulation to optimise the economics of mixed single-horizontal and multilateral well offshore oil developments

Multilateral wells promise cost savings to oil and fields as they have the potential to reduce overall drilling distances and minimize the number of slots required for the surface facility managing the ***,drilling a multilateral well does not always increase the flow rate when compared to two single-horizontal wells due to competition in production inside the ***,a holistic approach is proposed to find the optimum balance between single and multilateral wells in an offshore oil *** so doing,the integrated approach finds the highest Net Present Value(NPV)configuration of the field considering drilling,subsurface,production and financial *** model employs stochastic perturbation and Markov Chain Monte-Carlo methods to solve the global maximising-NPV *** addition,a combination of Mixed-Integer Linear Programming(MILP),an improved Dijkstra algorithm and a Levenberg-Marquardt optimiser is proposed to solve the rate allocation *** the outcome from this analysis,the model suggests the optimum development including number of multilateral and single horizontal wells that would result in the highest *** results demonstrate the potential for modelling to find the optimal use of petroleum facilities and to assist with planning and decision making.

Performance of microhaematuria and proteinuria as measured by urine reagent strips in estimating intensity and prevalence of Schistosoma haematobium infection in Nigeria

Objective:To assess if microhaematuria and proleinuria as measured by reagent strips could estimate intensity of Schistosoma haematobium(***) infection in endemic areas and evaluate their screening performance among children in Benue State,***:A lolal of 1124 urine samples were collected,screened for microhaematuria and proteinuria using reagent strips(Combi 9) and results were compared to filtration technique,the gold standard ***:A significant correlation was ohserved between microhaematuria(rho= 0.66. P<0.01).proteinuria(rho = 0.71.P<0.01) and intensity *** *** had sensitivity of 95.7%and specificity of 67.2%.while microhaematuria had sensitivity of 64.8%and specificity of 89.6%.The proportion of false positive diagnoses was higher in proleinuria(19.2%) than microliaematuria(6.0%).Conclusios:The findings suggest that use of urine reagent strips could potentially estimate intensity *** infection and their performance to screen urinary schistosomiasis agreed with previous observations.

Transmission Range-Aware Clustering for Green Cognitive Radio Ad Hoc Networks

The absence of network infrastructure and opportunistic spectrum access in cognitive radio ad hoc networks （CRAHNs） results in connectivity and stability problems. Clustering is known as an effective technique to overcome this problem. Clustering improves network performance by implementing a logical network backbone. Therefore, how to efficiently construct this backbone among CRAHNs is of interest. In this paper, we propose a new clustering algorithm for CRAHNs. Moreover, we model a novel cluster head selection function based on the channel heterogeneity in term of transmission ranges. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to model the channel heterogeneity into the clustering formation in cognitive radio networks. Simulation results show that the performance of clustering is significantly improved by the channel heterogeneity considerations.

In continuation of our chemical investigation on some medicinal plants of the genus Tephrosia, re-investigation of the methylenechloride/methanol （1：1） extract of the air-dried aerial part of Tephrosia apollinea afforded a new prenylated flavonoid 1, in addition to an aromatic ester, a sesquiterpene, a lignan and several known prenylated flavonoids. The structures were established by （^1H NMR, ^13C NMR, DEPT, ^1H-^1H COSY, HMQC, HMBC, NOESY and HRMS）. Relative configurations of 9 and 10 were confirmed by X-ray analysis.

Effect of Inclined Water Jets on Tensile Strength of Bicomponent Hydroentangled Nonwoven Fabrics

The effects of inclined water jets on bicomponent hydroentangled fabrics were investigated. The PET/COPET and PA6/PET hydroentangled fabrics were made by using designed inclined water jet apparatus. Effects of basis weight, water jets inclination angle and water jet pressure were discussed. The comparison was made on the average tensile strength of fabrics made by perpendicular water jets （0^o inclination angle） and inclined water jets of 20^o with pressure levels of 3 bars and 7 bars. It was found that increases of water jet pressure, the fabrics tensile strength were increased. Furthermore, increases of water jets inclination angle, fabric tensile strength of 60 g/m^2 fabrics decreased while for 100 g/m^2 fabrics tensile strength increased.

A genetic algorithm based lookup table approach for optimal stepping sequence of open-loop stepper motor systems

Stepper motor driven systems are widely used in industrial applications. They are mainly used for their low cost open-loop high performance. However, as dynamic systems need to be increasingly faster and their motion more precise, it is important to have an open-loop system which is accurate and reliable. In this paper, we present a novel technique in which a genetic algorithm （GA） based lookup table approach is used to find the optimal stepping sequence of an open-loop stepper motor system. The optimal sequence objective is to minimize residual vibration and to accurately follow trajectory. A genetic algorithm is used to find the best stepping sequence which minimizes the error and improves the system performance. Numerical simulation has showed the effectiveness of our approach to improve the system performance for both position and velocity. The optimized system reduced the residual vibration and was able to follow the trajectory with minimal error.
