Objective:To investigate the inhibitory effect of Telfairia occidentalis Hook f.(Curcubitaceae)(***)leaf on key enzyme linked to type-2 diabetes(α-amylase andα-glucosidase)as well as assess the effect of blanching(a commonly practiced food processing technique)of the vegetable on these key ***:Fresh leaves of *** were blanched in hot water for 10 minutes,and the extracts of both the fresh and blanched vegetables were prepared and used for subsequent *** inhibitory effect of the extract onα-amylase andα-glucosidase activities as well as some antioxidant parameter was determined in ***:The result revealed that unprocessed *** leaf reduce Fe^(3+)to Fe^(2+)and also inhibitedα-amylase andα-glucosidase activities in a dose dependent ***,blanching of the leafy vegetables caused a significant(P<0.05)increase in the antioxidant properties but decrease their ability to inhibitα-amylase andα-glucosidase ***:This antioxidant properties and enzyme inhibition could be part of the mechanism by which they are used in the treatment/prevention of type-2 ***,the blanched vegetable reduces their ability to inhibit bothα-amylase andα-glucosidase activity in vitro.

Objective:To investigate the modulatory effect of fermented legume condiments diet on oxidative stress in streptozotocin(STZ) induced diabetic ***:Adult male Wistar rats were randomly divided into six groups with six animals in each *** was induced by intraperitoneal injection of STZ(35 mg/kg b.w.).After being confirmed diabetic,the rats were fed with fermented Bambara *** bean and Soybean diets for 14 *** plasma was obtained after 14-day treatment and analyzed for hepatic damage marker enzymes(AST,ALT and ALP) and in vivo antioxidant ***:The diabetic untreated rats showed elevated (P<0.05) levels of AST,*** and malondialdehyde with reduced activities of glutathiones -transferase,catalase as well as plasma reduced glutathione,vitamin C and total protein ***,treatment of diabetic rats with lermenled legume condiments diets for 14 days significantly(P<0.05) reversed the above parameters towards normalcy,suggesting their modulation of oxidative stress,which mav be due to their high phenolic content and antioxidant ***:The attenuation of oxidative stress and protection of hepatic tissue damage by the legume condiment diets in STZ induced diabetic rats compare favourably with that of metformin,a well known oral hypoglycemic drug.

Deepfake Video Detection Employing Human Facial Features

Deepfake technology can be used to replace people’s faces in videos or pictures to show them saying or doing things they never said or did. Deepfake media are often used to extort, defame, and manipulate public opinion. However, despite deepfake technology’s risks, current deepfake detection methods lack generalization and are inconsistent when applied to unknown videos, i.e., videos on which they have not been trained. The purpose of this study is to develop a generalizable deepfake detection model by training convoluted neural networks (CNNs) to classify human facial features in videos. The study formulated the research questions: “How effectively does the developed model provide reliable generalizations?” A CNN model was trained to distinguish between real and fake videos using the facial features of human subjects in videos. The model was trained, validated, and tested using the FaceForensiq++ dataset, which contains more than 500,000 frames and subsets of the DFDC dataset, totaling more than 22,000 videos. The study demonstrated high generalizability, as the accuracy of the unknown dataset was only marginally (about 1%) lower than that of the known dataset. The findings of this study indicate that detection systems can be more generalizable, lighter, and faster by focusing on just a small region (the human face) of an entire video.

Objective:To investigate die ameliorative effect of dietary inclusion of garlic(Allium sativum)on gentamycin-induced hepatotoxicity in ***:Adult male rats were randomly divided into four groups with sis animals in each *** 1 and 2 were fed basal diet while Groups 3 and 4 were fed diets containing 2%and 4%garlic respeetively for 27 d prior to gentamycin *** was induced by the intraperitoneal administration at gentamycin(100 mg/kg body weight)for 3 *** liver and plasma were studied for hepatotoxicity and antioxidant ***:Gentamycin induces hepatic damage as revealed by significant(P<0.05)elevation of liver damage marker enzymes(aspartate transaminase and alanine aminotransferase)and reduction in plasma albumin *** also eaused a significant(P<0.05)alteration in plasma and liver enzymatic(catalase,glutathione and super oxygen dehydrogenises)and non-enzymatic(glutathione and vitamin C)antioxidant indices with concomitant increase in the malondialdehyde content;however,there was a significant(P<0.05)restoration of the antioxidant status coupled with significant(P<0.05)decrease in the tissues malondialdehyde content,following consumption of diets containing ***:These results suggest that dietary inclusion of garlic powder could protect against gentamycin-induced hepatotoxicity,improve antioxidant status and modulate oxidative stress;a function attributed to their phenolic constituents.

Sorption characteristics of multiple adsorption of six heavy metal ions often found in refinery waste waters using activated carbon from Nigerian bamboo was investigated. The bamboo was cut, washed and dried. It was carbonized between 350℃ - 500℃, and activated at 800℃ using nitric acid. Simultaneous batch adsorption of different heavy metal ions (Cd2+, Ni2+, Pb2+, Cr3+, Cu2+ and Zn2+) in same aqueous solution using activated carbon from Nigerian bamboo was carried out. The adsorption process had a better fit for the Freundlich, Temkin isotherm and Dubinin-Radushke-vich (DRK) isotherm models but could not fit well into Langmuir isotherm. Adsorption isotherms showed that there is competition among various metals for adsorption sites on Nigerian bamboo. The DRK model was used to determine the nature of the sorption process and was found to be physical and chemical, with sorption energy of metal ions ranging from (7 - 10 kJ/mol). The adsorption of Cd2+, Zn2+, Pb2+ and Ni2+ ions was chemisorptions and that of Cu2+ and Cr3+ ions was cooperative adsorption. Therefore, this study revealed that Nigerian bamboo can serve as a good source of activated carbon with multiple and simultaneous metalions—removing potentials and may serve as a better replacement for commercial activated carbons in applications that warrant their use.

This study was completed by an extensive mathematical analysis. New equation to sludge filtration processes has been proposed for use in routine laboratory. The equation has been suggested to replace ademiluyi’s cake filtration equation in view of the limitations of the latter. The new equation can be used for sludges whose compressibility factor is more than one but ademiluyi’s cake filtration equation can only be used for sludges whose compressibility coefficient is less than one. The new sludge filtration equation was derived using tannθ reduction method. The generalized equation thus obtained resembles ademiluyi’s equation in the mode of parameter combination except the presence of summation notation in the new equation.

In this study, a model for sludge filtration resistance (SFR) was developed using electrical resistance analogy by relating the rate at which water flows to the current of charge to determine Sludge Filtration Resistance using a typical single Electrical Resistance from a Direct Current Circuit. Synthetic sludge was successfully formulated for experimental purposes. The advantage of using synthetic sludge was that they permitted experiments to be performed on stable samples with known physical and chemical properties not subject to degradation by microbial activity. The result from the present study indicates the effect of conditioner on synthetic sludge filtration at variable pressure for sludge filtration resistance (SFR) and the trends in the results indicated that SFR reduces with increase in the concentration of dissolved salt (CaCl2). The linearity observed between plot of volume of filtrate versus time of filtration by correlation coefficient of R2 = 0.9292 (Figure 1) for 10 g of CaCl2 and R2 = 0.9294 (Figure 2) for 18 g of CaCl2. It is evident from the calculated values that they are very strong and have testified that the effect of conditioner on synthetic sludge filtration at variable pressure for sludge filtration resistance (SFR) using electrical resistance analogy is very satisfactory. When compared the existing data from SFR with other measure of filterability calculated using Carman’s equation to validate the model, it was observed that specific resistance decreases as the concentration of CaCl2 (dissolved salt) increases which agrees with SFR.

This study modeled the relationship between Sludge Filtration Resistance (SFR) and Capillary Suction Time (CST) using the data generated from different concentrations of CaCl2 for SFR and CST empirically using the Equation proposed by Christensen et al. (1993). The main purpose of conducting CST and SRF tests at wastewater treatment plants is to save operating costs by evaluating the optimal dose of the sludge conditioner, known as the dose of coagulant that yields the minimal capillary suction time or resistance to filtration. In order to establish a relationship between the SFR with CST, there is a relatively good correlation between CST and SFR. The results showed that the values of CST decreased with increasing CaCl2 concentration, and a good dewaterability could be obtained at the CaCl2 dosage of 18 g with the corresponding CST of 5.52 s for 20 mm internal cylinder and 30.84 s for 14.5 mm internal cylinder. The results of SFR tests shown decreased with an increase in CaCl2 dosage. The optimal CaCl2 dosage was 18 g and the corresponding SFR was 2.65 × 108 N·s/m5. The results of this study for CST recommend larger diameter cylinder to be used to test heavy sludge because the larger cylinder significantly reduces the variability and the time taken to conduct the CST tests.

Dry season water application and conservation were studied for two years in Ado Ekiti to evaluate their effects on the performance of plantain Musa spp.. The treatments were: morning watering (MW), evening watering (EW), morning and evening watering (MEW), morning watering + mulch (MW + ML), evening watering + mulch (EW + ML), morning and evening watering + mulch (MEW + ML), mulch (ML) and Control. Height and girth increase, number of green leaves, yield and yield parameters were the highest in the MEW + ML which were identical to those of Evening watering + mulch and morning + evening watering. The evening or morning watering with mulch was identical but showed better performance than those without mulch. The mulched plants and the control showed the least performance. It is therefore recommended that proper water conservation in plantain plantation will improve banana survival during dry season and subsequently increase yield in the study area.

The study examined the impact of using power tiller as a means of mechanizing lowland rice production in Nigeria. The study was carried out in Bida area, Niger State, where the sawah rice production was disseminated by Watershed Initiative in Nigeria (WIN). And in Ajase Ipo of Kwara State, some of the parameters assessed during the study included average speed of operation, average wheel slip/travel reduction, average draught of implement, and fuel consumption. The cost of operation and yield over five years of usage at Niger State and two years in Kwara State was determined and it was therefore concluded that the power tiller is the most appropriate field machinery for tillage operations such as puddling, leveling on lowland rice production in Nigeria.
