Glaucoma is a multifactorial disease and occurs in many different species.In humans,glaucoma is accounted one of the leading causes for blindness worldwide.Due to glaucoma's complexity,it is still unclear what pathomechanisms may be involved in its development in humans as well as in other species,such as canines.Diagnosis of glaucoma can be delayed because patients often do not notice a visual field loss until approximately30%of retinal ganglion cells(RGCs)are lost(Kerrigan-Baumrind et al.,2000).Although the exact undergoing pathomechanisms of glaucoma disease are not fully understood yet,an increased intraocular pressure(IOP)is related to RGCdeath and is considered the main risk factor.

基于全国11所八年制临床医学教育培养单位的毕业生调查数据,从培养入口、培养过程和培养出口三个层面对我国八年制临床医学生的培养状况、就读体验和职业发展进行实证分析。结果表明,我国八年制临床医学教育存在培养目标定位不够明确、教学方法较为单一、部分课程质量不高、毕业生科研能力发展欠佳、工作负担较重、职业满意度不高等挑战。为了提高八年制临床医学教育培养质量,要进一步从强化学生学习动机、丰富教育教学方法、重视学生科研能力培养、提高课程质量、明确培养目标、做好学生职业生涯规划等方面不断加以完善和改进。

A geomechanics classification for the rating of railroad subgrade performance

The type of subgrade of a railroad foundation is vital to the overall performance of the track structure.With the train speed and tonnage increase,as well as environmental changes,the evaluation and influence of subgrade are even more paramount in the railroad track structure performance.A geomechanics classification for subgrade is proposed coupling the stiffness(resilient modulus)and permanent deformation behaviour evaluated by means of repeated triaxial loading tests.This classification covers from fine-to coarse-grained soils,grouped by UIC and ASTM.For this achievement,we first summarize the main models for estimating resilient modulus and permanent deformation,including the evaluation of their robustness and their sensitivity to mechanical and environmental parameters.This is followed by the procedure required to arrive at the geomechanical classification and rating,as well as a discussion of the influence of environmental factors.This work is the first attempt to obtain a new geomechanical classification that can be a useful tool in the evaluation and modelling of the foundation of railway structures.

Recent literature has addressed initial coin offering(ICO)projects,which are an innovative form of venture financing through cryptocurrencies using blockchain technology.Many features of ICOs remain unexplored,leaving much room for additional research,including the success factors of ICO projects.We investigate the success of ICO projects,with our main purpose being to identify factors that influence a project’s outcome.Following a literature review,from which several potential variables were collected,we used a database comprising 428 ICO projects in the banking/financial sector to regress several econometric models.We confirmed the impacts of several variables and obtained particularly valuable results concerning project and campaign variables.We confirmed the importance of a well-structured and informative white-paper.The proximity to certain markets with high availability of financial and human capital is also an important determinant of the success of an ICO.We also confirm the strong dependency on cryptocurrency and the impact of cryptocurrency valuations on the success of a project.Furthermore,we confirm the importance of social media in ICO projects,as well as the importance of human capital characteristics.Our research contributes to the ICO literature by capturing most of the success factors previously identified and testing their impacts based on a large database.The current research contributes to the building of systems theory and signaling theory by adapting their frameworks to the ICO environment.Our results are also important for regulators,as ICOs are mainly unregulated and have vast future potential,and for investors,who can benefit from our analysis and use it in their due diligence.

In this study,we analyze the lead-lag relationships between the US industry index and those of six other major countries from January 1973 to May 2021.We identify the leading role played by the US internationally by showing that the weekly returns of US industries,especially the US basic materials and energy industries,significantly Granger cause the returns of most other countries’industries,suggesting that non-US industries react with some delay to new information.This delayed reaction is even more notice-able during periods of recession in the US when cross-country correlations are higher.This implies that the ability of the lagged returns of US industries to predict industries’returns from other countries is even more pronounced when the US experienced an economic recession.A similar asymmetric relationship is found between the volatil-ity of US industries and that of industries in other markets.The analysis of causality in the distribution of returns and volatility shows that causality runs mainly from the US to other countries,particularly in the presence of extreme negative shocks.Finally,we demonstrate that our predictions are valuable to real-world investors.Long-short strategies generate sizable and statistically significant alphas,and a constant relative risk-averse investor obtains certainty equivalent returns well above the risk-free rate.

Liver diseases after kidney transplantation range from mild biochemical abnormalities to severe hepatitis or cirrhosis.The causes are diverse and mainly associated with hepatotropic viruses,drug toxicity and metabolic disorders.Over the past decade,the aetiology of liver disease in kidney recipients has changed significantly.These relates to the use of direct-acting antiviral agents against hepatitis C virus,the increasing availability of vaccination against hepatitis B and a better understanding of drug-induced hepatotoxicity.In addition,the emergence of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 pandemic has brought new challenges to kidney recipients.This review aims to provide healthcare professionals with a comprehensive understanding of recent advances in the management of liver complications in kidney recipients and to enable them to make informed decisions regarding the risks and impact of liver disease in this population.

BACKGROUND The impact of social determinants of health in allogeneic transplant recipients in low-and middle-income countries is poorly described.This observational study analyzes the impact of place of residence,referring institution,and transplant cost coverage(out-of-pocket vs government-funded vs private insurance)on outcomes after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation(alloHSCT)in two of Mexico's largest public and private institutions.AIM To evaluate the impact of social determinants of health and their relationship with outcomes among allogeneic transplant recipients in Mexico.METHODS In this retrospective cohort study,we included adolescents and adults≥16 years who received a matched sibling or haploidentical transplant from 2015-2022.Participants were selected without regard to their diagnosis and were sourced from both a private clinic and a public University Hospital in Mexico.Three payment groups were compared:Out-of-pocket(OOP),private insurance,and a federal Universal healthcare program“Seguro Popular”.Outcomes were compared between referred and institution-diagnosed patients,and between residents of Nuevo Leon and out-of-state.Primary outcomes included overall survival(OS),categorized by residence,referral,and payment source.Secondary outcomes encompassed early mortality,event-free-survival,graft-versus-host-relapse-free survival,and non-relapse-mortality(NRM).Statistical analyses employed appropriate tests,Kaplan-Meier method,and Cox proportional hazard regression modeling.Statistical software included SPSS and R with tidycmprsk library.RESULTS Our primary outcome was overall survival.We included 287 patients,n=164 who lived out of state(57.1%),and n=129 referred from another institution(44.9%).The most frequent payment source was OOP(n=139,48.4%),followed by private insurance(n=75,26.1%)and universal coverage(n=73,25.4%).No differences in OS,event-free-survival,NRM,or graft-versus-host-relapse-free survival were observed for patients diagnosed locally vs in another institution,nor pat

Over the past decades,empirical evidence has been accumulated indicating that olfactory information plays a fundamental role in bird life history.Nonetheless,many aspects of avian olfaction remain poorly understood.Our purpose was to broaden the knowledge about the importance of the sense of smell in some neglected bird groups:psittaciformes and ramphastids,and to compare how the response varied between the species.Because of the lack of information about the use of chemical cues for locating food in fruit-eating species,we also aimed to delve into this question.We conducted a 3-choice(water/vinegar/papaya and banana juice)scent test in 5 Costa Rican native species:scarlet macaw(Ara macao),red-lored amazon(Amazona autumnalis),yellow-naped amazon(Amazona auropalliata),keel-billed toucan(Ramphastos sulfuratus),and yellow-throated toucan(Ramphastos ambiguus).Results revealed that macaws and toucans allocated signiﬁcantly more time to interacting with the fruit scent container,indicating that these species can perceive the volatile chemicals emitted by ripe fruits and that they can use this information to make foraging decisions.However,amazons did not dedicate more time to interact with the fruit treatment.Our research provides theﬁrst evidence of the ability to exploit chemical volatile cues in macaws and toucans.

We propose a computational model to study the growth and spread of bacterial biofilms on interfaces,as well as the action of antibiotics on them.Bacterial membranes are represented by boundaries immersed in a fluid matrix and subject to interaction forces.Growth,division and death of bacterial cells follow dynamic energy budget rules,in response to variations in environmental concentrations of nutrients,toxicants and substances released by the cells.In this way,we create,destroy and enlarge boundaries,either spherical or rod-like.Appropriate forces represent details of the interaction between cells,and the interaction with the environment.We can investigate geometrical arrangements and the formation of porous structures.Numerical simulations illustrate the evolution of top views and diametral slices of small biofilm seeds,as well as the action of antibiotics.We show that cocktails of antibiotics targeting active and dormant cells can entirely eradicate a biofilm.
