Anti-inflammatory efficiency of levobupivacaine in an experimental colitis model

AIM:To investigate the efficiency of levobupivacaine in treating experimentally induced colitis in ***:Colitis was induced by trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid and ethanol in 30 rats under general anesthesia,and 10 rats were used as a sham *** to induction of colitis,rats were divided into three groups;budesonide group received 0.1 mg/kg budesonide,levobupivacaine group received 10 mg/kg levobupivacaine and saline group received 1 mL saline solution via rectal route for 7 *** the sham group,only routine rectal catheterization was performed without use of any *** the end of 7 d,laparotomy and total colectomy were performed for histopathological ex-amination in all rats and blood samples were drawn for measurement of tumor necrosis factor(TNF)-αand interleukin(IL)-6 following cardiac *** and microscopic evaluations of the specimens were performed by a pathologist blinded to group assignment of the ***:Weight loss(P=0.016)and macroscopic examination scores(P=0.001)were significantly higher in saline group than *** scoring was comparable between all colitis groups(P=0.350).There was no significant difference in TNF-αlevels and IL-6 levels(P=0.150).CONCLUSION:The significant improvement in macroscopic scores suggests that levobupivacaine may have topical anti-inflammatory effects in an experimental colitis model;however,this finding was not supported by microscopic findings.

Environmental monitoring in the Kaklik Cave (Denizli, Turkey)

The formation of caves is the special environment of our earth. Caves with dim natural light and lighted hypogean environments, have been found various organism. The Kaklik Cave located tectonic lines and has a very different way of formation when compare with many other same karstic formation caves. The Kaklik Cave is located in the area of Kaklik town in Honaz area and in Denizli province. The cave is one of the 54 cave opened to tourism in Turkey and endanger. In this study the cave climate, hydrol?ogy and biology were studied. The cave has specific species due to this formation, the entrance is wide and open to the sky, that makes the sunlight could go through a very wide area and cause of it is very rich about hydrology, these effects;provide a very high biodiversity to the cave. The cave has very important touristic potential because of the continuously growing travertine, geographical position, availability of access and natural beauties. The wrong artificial lightning badly changes the natural structure of the cave. This artificial lightning causes the biofilm layer and changing on the color of the travertine.

The Effect of Storage Solutions on Mineral Content of Enamel

Purpose: This study evaluated the influence of different storage times and storage solutions on the mineral content of enamel. Methods: Ninety enamel slabs were randomly divided into 2 groups of 45: a 45-day group and a 90-day group. Each of these main groups was further subdivided into 9 experimental groups of 5 slabs, and each subgroup was stored in a different storage solution. The mean percentage weights of 5 elements (calcium, potassium, sodium, phosphorus, and magnesium) presented in each enamel slab was measured after storage using inductively coupled plasmaatomic emission spectrometry. Two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Turkey’s honestly significant difference tests were used to analyze differences between the groups. Results: Storage conditions significantly affected the levels of calcium, potassium, sodium, and phosphorus (p 0.05). Storage procedures can significantly affect the calcium, potassium, sodium, and phosphorus contents of enamel.

Intracolonic multiple pebbles in young adults:Radiographic imaging and conventional approach to a case

Most of the foreign bodies detected in adult gastroin- testinal systems are accidentally swallowed pins. In this study, we presented a case with intracolonic multiple pebbles. A 20-year-old man was admitted to emergency surgery policlinic for abdominal pain for 2 d without any alleviation or aggravation. His upright plain abdominal radiographic imaging revealed about 30-40 overt dense opacities in lumen of colonic segments, with oval and well shaped contours, each approximately 1 cm × 1 cm in size. The multiplanar reconstructions and three- dimensional images combined with sectional screening showed that all pebbles had passed completely into the colon and no foreign bodies had remained in the ileal segments. On psychiatric assessment, he was found to have immature personality features, difficulty in over- coming stressors and adaptation disorder. He recovered by conservative management and radiographic monitoring applied during his follow-up. Thus, it can be concluded that, in differential diagnosis of abdominal pain in adult ages, though less frequently seen than in children, gastrointestinal system foreign bodies should always be kept in mind and it should be considered that ingestion of pebbles may be one of the factors contributing to abdominal pain particularly in young adults with psychiatric problems. In such cases suspected of having foreign bodies which cannot be detected by plain films, abdominal tomography can be an alternative for diagnostic imaging.

Effect of Surface Treatment on Elemental Composition of Recast NiCr Alloy

Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the effects of different surface treatments on the elemental composition stability of as-received and recast types of NiCr casting alloys. Material and Methods: Six commercial NiCr dental casting alloys (Kera N, Nodelco, Bellabond, Wiron 99, Metaplus VK, and Tritech D) were used in this study. Seventy-two specimens (12 × 12 × 1.2 mm) were produced using the lost-wax casting process. Three casting protocols were established in relation to the proportion of as-received and recast alloys: Group A (100% as-received metal), Group B (50 wt% new metal, 50 wt% once-recast metal), and Group C (100% once-recast metal). Two specimens in every group received two different surface treatments: sandblasting with 110 μmm Al2O3 or oxidation firing. An elemental analysis was performed with x-ray energy-dispersive spectroscopy. Results were subjected to one-way analysis of variance and Tukey HSD tests. Results: The elemental composition was significantly different in the casting groups and treatment groups (p < 0.05). The lowest mean weight percentage Ni value was recorded for Group C and the highest for Group A. Aluminum-oxide sandblasting of the alloy surface reduced the mean weight percentage for Cr. Conclusion: Recasting metal alloys may adversely affect surface quality.

Quantitative trait loci associated with soybean seed weight and composition under different phosphorus levels

Seed size and composition are important traits in food crops and can be affected by nutrient availability in the soil. Phosphorus （P） is a non-renewable, essential macronutrient, and P deficiency limits soybean （G1ycine max） yield and quality. To investigate the associations of seed traits in low- and high-P environ- ments, soybean recombinant inbred lines （RILs） from a cross of cultivars Fiskeby III and Mandarin （Ottawa） were grown under contrasting P availability environments. Traits including individual seed weight, seed number, and intact mature pod weight were significantly affected by soil P levels and showed transgressive segregation among the RILs. Surprisingly, P treatments did not affect seed composition or weight, suggesting that soybeanmaintains sufficient P in seeds even in Iow-P soil. Quantitative trait loci （QTLs） were detected for seed weight, intact pods, seed volume, and seed protein, with five significant QTLs identified in Iow-P environments and one significant QTL found in the optimaI-P environment. Broad-sense heritability estimates were 0.78 （individual seed weight）, *** （seed protein）, 0.34 （seed oil）, and 0.98 （seed number）. The QTLs identified under low P point to genetic regions that may be useful to improve soybean performance under limiting P conditions.

A Linear Programming Approach for Parallel Cell Scheduling with Sequence-Dependent Setup Times

In this study, we consider the problem of scheduling a set of jobs with sequence-dependent setup times on a set of parallel production cells. The objective of this study is to minimize the total completion time. We note that total customer demands for each type should be satisfied, and total required production time in each cell cannot exceed the capacity of the cell. This problem is formulated as an integer programming model and an interface is designed to provide integrity between data and software. Mathematical model is tested by both randomly generated data set and real-world data set from a factory that produce automotive components. As a result of this study, the solution which gives the best alternative production schedule is obtained.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea Related Symptom Prevalence in Patients with Headache Presented to Neurology Outpatient Clinic: Results of a Preliminary Study

Approximately 20% of patients with sleep apnea will have headaches and 25% of patients with other sleep disorders will also experience headaches. We aim to evaluate sleep apnea related symptom prevalence in patient with headache presenting to neurology outpatient clinics. Twenty four patients with headache were asked for sleep apnea symptoms. The prevalence of snoring, excessive daytime sleepiness and witnessed apnea was 33.3%, 20.8% and 4.2%, respectively. Among sleep apnea symptoms, the presence of at least one symptom, at least two symptoms and all three symptoms were 9 (37.5%), 4 (16.7%) and 1 (4.2%), respectively. The frequency of major symptoms of sleep apnea syndrome was high in patient with nonspecific headache. In the light of literature review, in case of a suspicion of sleep disorder in a headache patient, it would be appropriate to question the major symptoms of OSAS, and to refer the patient to a polysomnographic evaluation for an objective diagnosis. This approach would be helpful to improve the quality of life of patients with headache.
