COUPLING OF ASSUMED STRESS FINITE ELEMENT AND BOUNDARY ELEMENT METHODS WITH STRESS-TRACTION EQUILIBRIUM

In this study, the stress based finite element method is coupled with the boundary element method in two different ways. In the first one, the ordinary distribution matrix is used for coupling. In the second one, the stress traction equilibrium is used at the interface line of both regions as a new coupling process. This new coupling procedure is presented without a distribution matrix. Several case studies are solved for the validation of the developed coupling procedure. The results of case studies are compared with the distribution matrix coupling, displacement based finite element method, assumed stress finite element method, boundary element method, ANSYS and analytical results whenever possible. It is shown that the coupling of the stress traction equilibrium with assumed stress finite elements gives as accurate results as those by the distribution matrix coupling.

Relationship between serum cytokine levels and histopathological changes of liver in patients with hepatitis B

AIM: To investigate whether there was a relationship between the liver functions and fibrosis scores of hepatitis B patients and their TNF-α, IFN-γ,IL-4, and TGF-β1 serum levels based on the studies of liver biopsies. METHODS: Thirty patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) receiving no treatment and 30 healthy individuals with negative hepatitis serology and normal values of liver biochemistry were studied. After serum samples of the patients were collected, liver needle biopsy was performed on each patient. Cytokine levels were studied by ELISA. The biopsy materials were scored based on Knodell's histological activity index. RESULTS: In comparison of cytokine levels between CHB patients and control group, TNF-α,IL-4, and TGPβ1 levels of the patients were higher in CHB patients than in the controls, while IFN-γ level was lower in the patients than in the controls. There were significant differences between the groups in TNF-α, IL-4, TGF-β1, and IFN-γ(P0.05). TGF-β1 was correlated with fibrosis (P0.05). CONCLUSION: In the course of HBV infection and its chronic progress, cytokines play an important role. IL-4 and IFN-γ are effective in the chronic progression, while TGF-β1 is effective in the development of fibrosis. Serum cytokine levels may be effective tools in the estimation of chronic progression and fibrosis development.

Increased bone mineral density in patients with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis

AIM:To determine the relationship between non-alcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH)and bone mineral density(BMD).METHODS:A total of 38 patients(25 males)with a diagnosis of histologically proven NASH and 42 healthy controls(24 males)were enrolled in the *** features,clinical findings,complete blood count and routine biochemical analysis,as well as adrenal,thyroid and gonadal functions,were ***,intact parathormone,25-OH-vitamin-D3,tumor necrosis factor-α,interleukin-6,interleukin-1,in-sulin-like growth factor-1 and insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3 levels were measured in both ***,lumbar spine and femoral neck BMD of both groups were measured by the dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry(DXA)***:The mean age was 41±12 years in the NASH group and 43±11 years in the control *** demographic features,waist circumference was significantly larger in the NASH group compared to the control group(P<0.019).Among laboratory parameters,serum triglyceride(P<0.008),alanine transaminase(P<0.0001),aspartate transaminase(P<0.001),alkaline phosphatase(P<0.016),gamma glutamyl transferase(P<0.0001),ferritin(P<0.001)and 25-OH-vitamin-D3levels(P<0.0001)were significantly higher in the NASH group compared to the control *** BMD was significantly higher in the NASH group compared to the control group(1.057±0.119 g/cm2vs 0.941±0.133 g/cm2;P<0.001,respectively).In the NASH group,there was no significant relationship between BMD and fibrosis stage in liver ***:NASH increases BMD and may be related to an elevated serum 25-OH-vitamin D3 level.
