Background:This study was conducted to determine protein molecular structure profiles and quantify the relationship between protein structural features and protein metabolism and bioavailability of blend pel eted products(BPP)based on co-products(canola or carinata)from processing with different proportions of pulse pea screenings and lignosulfonate chemical compound.Method:The protein molecular structures were determined using the non-invasive advanced vibrational molecular spectroscopy(ATR-FT/IR)in terms of chemical structure and biofunctional groups of amides(ⅠandⅡ),α-helix andβ-sheet.Results:The results showed that increasing the level of the co-products in BPP significantly increased the spectral intensity of the amide area and amide height.The products exhibited similar protein secondaryα-helix toβ-sheet ratio.The protein molecular structure profiles(amidesⅠandⅡ,α-helix toβ-sheet)were highly associated with protein degradation kinetics and intestinal digestion.In conclusion,the non-invasive vibrational molecular spectroscopy(ATR-FT/IR)could be used to detect inherent structural make-up characteristics in BPP.Conclusion:The molecular structural features related to protein biopolymer were highly associated with protein utilization and metabolism.

Developing renewable energy is now becom- ing a hot topic as it is important in dealing with climate change issue and energy supply issue. With the growing demand of energy, it has become urgent to develop the effective policies and measures that would enable people to maintain the living standards. Among all the measures, price is an essential one. In order to evaluate the costs and prices of the electricity from renewable energy sources （RES-E） and their effects to the market, this paper firstly focus on the extra costs of the RES-E by breaking it into four parts, including investment, construction, connection and operation. Then, the policy choices made in some typical industrialized countries are examined to find answers to the problems RES-E can raise. Finally, the choices made in China are examined in comparison to industrialized countries so as to determine how the current situation could be improved.

Lichens are symbiotic organisms that comprise a fungus and a photosynthetic partner wich are recognized as a good indicator of climate change.However,our understanding of how aridity affects the diversity of saxicolous lichens in drylands is still limited.To evaluate the relationship between saxicolous lichen diversity and aridity in a central México dryland,a geographical transect was established of 100 km to build an aridity gradient in the semiarid zone of the State of Querétaro,Mexico,comprising ten sampling sites with a 10 km separation.Species richness,abundance and diversity of soil lichen species were recorded using two sampling methods:the quadrat-intercept and the line-intercept method,to compare their performance in assessing soil lichen diversity in drylands.The number of species and Shannon diversity of saxicolous lichens were higher at intermediate values of the aridity index(AI=0.10-0.34).Quadrat intercept and point intercept methods gave quite similar results,which means that the selected method does not influence the results in a significant way.This study confirms the role of saxicolous lichens as climate change indicators and reveals the importance of the sampling method selection in the evaluation of different parameters of soil lichen diversity in drylands.

Modeling Size-number Distributions of Seeds for Use in Soil Bank Studies

Knowledge of soil seed banks is essential to understand the dynamics of plant populations and communities and would greatly benefit from the integration of existing knowledge on ecological correlations of seed size and shape. The present study aims to establish a feasible and meaningful method to describe size-number distributions of seeds in multi-species situations. For that purpose, size-number distributions of seeds with known length, width and thickness were determined by sequential sieving. The most appropriate combination of sieves and seeds dimensions was established, and the adequacy of the power function and the Weibull model to describe size-number distributions of spherical, non-spherical, and all seeds was investigated. We found that the geometric mean of seed length, width and thickness was the most adequate size estimator, providing shape-independent measures of seeds volume directly related to sieves mesh side, and that both the power function and the Weibull model provide high quality descriptions of size-number distributions of spherical, non-spherical, and all seeds. We also found that, in spite of its slightly lower accuracy, the power function is, at this stage, a more trustworthy model to characterize size-number distributions of seeds in soil banks because in some Weibull equations the estimates of the scale parameter were not acceptable.

Reinforced concrete（RC） buildings in Nepal are constructed with RC frames and masonry infill panels. These structures exhibit a highly non-linear inelastic behavior resulting from the interaction between the panels and frames. This paper presents an extensive case study of existing RC buildings in Nepal. Non-linear analyses were performed on structural models of the buildings considered as a bare frame and with masonry infill, in order to evaluate the influence of infill walls on the failure mechanisms. Five three-storey buildings with different structural configurations and detailing were selected. The effect of masonry infill panels on structural response was delineated by comparing the bare-framed response with the infill response. Seismic performance is evaluated with regard to global strength, stiffness, energy dissipation, inter-storey drift, and total deflection of the structure. A parametric analysis of structures with masonry infill is also performed. For this, the influence of different material properties is studied, namely diagonal compressive stress, modulus of elasticity and tensile stress of masonry infill panels. Study results show that masonry infill increases the global strength and stiffness of the structures; it decreases the inter-storey drift and hence the total displacement of the structure. The results quantify the influence of the infill panels on structural response and, in particular, the effect of the diagonal compressive strength of the masonry wall.

Although several research works in the literature have focused on studying the capabilities of additive manufacturing(AM) systems, few works have addressed the development of Design for Additive Manufacturing(DfAM) knowledge,tools, rules, and methodologies, which has limited the penetration and impact of AM in industry. In this paper a comprehensive review of design and manufacturing strategies for Fused Deposition Modelling(FDM) is presented.Consequently, several DfAM strategies are proposed and analysed based on existing research works and the operation principles, materials, capabilities and limitations of the FDM process. These strategies have been divided into four main groups: geometry, quality, materials and sustainability. The implementation and practicality of the proposed DfAM is illustrated by three case studies. The new proposed DfAM strategies are intended to assist designers and manufacturers when making decisions to satisfy functional needs, while ensuring manufacturability in FDM systems.Moreover, many of these strategies can be applied or extended to other AM processes besides FDM.

Lead zirconate(PbZrO_(3))is considered the prototypical antiferroelectric material with an antipolar ground state.Yet,several experimental and theoretical works hint at a partially polar behaviour in this compound,indicating that the polarization may not be completely compensated.In this work,we propose a simple ferrielectric structure for lead zirconate.First-principles calculations reveal this state to be more stable than the commonly accepted antiferroelectric phase at low temperatures,possibly up to room temperature,suggesting that PbZrO_(3)may not be antiferroelectric at ambient conditions.We discuss the implications of our discovery,how it can be reconciled with experimental observations and how the ferrielectric phase could be obtained in practice.

It is remarkable,the recent advances concerning the development of numerical modeling frameworks to simulate the infill panels'seismic behavior.However,there is a lack of experimental data of their mechanical properties,which are of full importance to calibrate the numerical models.The primary objective of this paper is to present an extensive experimental campaign of mechanical characterization tests of infill masonry walls made with three different types of masonry units:lightweight vertical hollow concrete blocks and hollow clay bricks.Four different types of experimental tests were carried out,namely:compression strength tests,diagonal tensile strength tests,and flexural strength tests parallel and perpendicular to the horizontal bed joints.A total amount of 80 tests were carried out and are reported in the present paper.The second objective of this study was to compare the mechanical properties of as-built and existing infill walls.The results presented and discussed herein,will be in terms of strain-stress curves and damages observed within the tests.It was observed a fragile behavior in the panels made with hollow clay horizontal bricks,without propagation of cracks.The plaster increased the flexural strength by 57%.

This work introduces a methodology to estimate coffee prices based on the use of Extreme Learning Machines.The process is initiated by identifying the presence of nonstationary components,like seasonality and trend.These components are withdrawn if they are found.Next,the temporal lags are selected based on the response of the Partial Autocorre-lation Function filter.As predictors,we address the following models:Exponential Smooth-ing(ES),Autoregressive(AR)and Autoregressive Integrated and Moving Average(ARIMA)models,Multilayer Perceptron(MLP)and Extreme Learning Machines(ELMs)neural net-works.The computational results based on three error metrics and two coffee types(Ara-bica and Robusta)showed that the neural networks,especially the ELM,can reach higher performance levels than the other models.The methodology,which presents preprocess-ing stages,lag selection,and use of ELM,is a novelty that contributes to the coffee prices forecasting field.
