Different expression pattern of serum soluble intercellular adhesion molecules-1 and neutrophilic expression of CD18 in patients with diabetic retinopathy

aiM: To investigate the levels of serum soluble intercellular adhesion molecules-1 (sICAM-1) and neutrophilic expression of CD18 in patients with various stages of diabetic retinopathy and to determine their different expression pattern in the development of diabetic retinopathy(DR). METHODS: Levels of serum sICAM-1 and CD18 on the surface of neutrophile were measured in 41 DR patients, they were classified in three subgroups according to the stage of retinopathy as determined by fund's ophthalmoscopy; 10 control subjects were also studied. sICAM-1 were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and CD18 by flow cytometry. RESULTS: The neutrophilic CD18 expression and serum sICAM-1 level were all significantly elevated in all diabetic subgroups compared to control subjects (P <0.01). The differences of CD18 and sICAM-1 among the diabetic subgroups were significant in CD18 but not in sICAM-1. The progression of retinopathy was associated with an increase both in CD18 and in sICAM-1 levels by simple correlation analysis (beta =0.74, P<0.001; beta =0.38, P<0.01, respectively). But stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that only CD18 Was independent determinant of retinopathy (beta =1.04, P<0.01). CONCLUSION: Our results confirm the contribution of endothelial and neutrophilic activation in the development of DR as indicated by increased levels of CD18 and sICAM-1. However, a direct implication of CD18 and ICAM-1 in the progression of DR can be supported only in the CD18 but not ICAM-1. CD18 and ICAM-1 may play different role in the development of diabetic retinopathy.

FLOWS THROUGH ENERGY DISSIPATERS WITH SUDDEN REDUCTION AND SUDDEN ENLARGEMENT FORMS

The energy dissipation of flood discharges has been one of important problems that affect directly the safety of hydropower projects. The energy dissipater with sudden reduction and sudden enlargement forms, used widely in large-scale projects has been a kind of effective structure for energy dissipation. The concept of critical thickness was defined, which is related to both the geometric parameters and the hydraulic parameters of the energy dissipater, and the factors affecting the critical thickness, were analzsed by means of dimensional analysis. The empirical expression about the critical thickness was obtained and could be used as the criterion to distinguish the flows through the energy dissipater, i.e., the plug flow and the orifice plate flow. The error analysis showed that the critical thickness calculated by the expression has the errors of smaller than 10% in the estimation of the flows for the energy dissipater mentioned above.

Structural diversity for decision tree ensemble learning

Decision trees are a kind of off-the-shelf predictive models, and they have been successfully used as the base learners in ensemble learning. To construct a strong classi- fier ensemble, the individual classifiers should be accurate and diverse. However, diversity measure remains a mystery although there were many attempts. We conjecture that a deficiency of previous diversity measures lies in the fact that they consider only behavioral diversity, i.e., how the classifiers behave when making predictions, neglecting the fact that classifiers may be potentially different even when they make the same predictions. Based on this recognition, in this paper, we advocate to consider structural diversity in addition to behavioral diversity, and propose the TMD （tree matching diversity） measure for decision trees. To investigate the usefulness of TMD, we empirically evaluate performances of selective ensemble approaches with decision forests by incorporating different diversity measures. Our results validate that by considering structural and behavioral diversities together, stronger ensembles can be constructed. This may raise a new direction to design better diversity measures and ensemble methods.

Background MicroRNA-29b(miR-29b)has been suggested to possess pro-inflammatory activity,which can partially be explained by the repression of tumor necrosis factor alpha protein three antibody(TNFaiP3).Meanwhile,it also promotes thyroid cell proliferation via Smad signaling *** present study aimed to elucidate the role of miR-29b in Henoch Sch(o)nlein purpura nephritis(HSPN)and its underlying molecular mechanism in angiotensinⅡ(AngⅡ)-induced human glomerular mesangial cell(HGMC)*** We evaluated miR-29b expression in 35 HSPN renal tissues based on crescent formation,glomerular sclerosis,interstitial fibrosis,thrombosis formation and capillary loop ***,HGMCs were cultured,treated with AngⅡand then transfected with LV-hsa-miR-29b-1 to induce miR-29b overexpression or LV-hsa-miR-29b-3p-inhibition to inhibit miR-29b ***,we examined the effects of miR-29b on cell proliferation and release of inflammatory *** We observed that miR-29b expression was significantly higher in the crescent group than in the no crescent ***-29b overexpression induced the release of intercellular adhesion molecule-1,interleukin-1β(IL-1β),IL-6,IL-8,the increase of CyclinA2,CyclinD 1,and cell *** also could inhibit the expressions of TNFaiP3 and NF-kappa-B-repressing factor(NKRF).Correspondingly,miR-29b inhibition produced the opposite effects and increased the expression of TNFaiP3 and *** MiR-29b expression is altered in crescent formation of HSPN and accelerates AngⅡ-induced mesangial cell proliferation and release of inflammatory mediators.
