Deep-learning classifier with ultrawide-field fundus ophthalmoscopy for detecting branch retinal vein occlusion

AIM: To investigate and compare the efficacy of two machine-learning technologies with deep-learning(DL) and support vector machine(SVM) for the detection of branch retinal vein occlusion(BRVO) using ultrawide-field fundus images. METHODS: This study included 237 images from 236 patients with BRVO with a mean±standard deviation of age 66.3±10.6 y and 229 images from 176 non-BRVO healthy subjects with a mean age of 64.9±9.4 y. Training was conducted using a deep convolutional neural network using ultrawide-field fundus images to construct the DL model. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value(PPV), negative predictive value(NPV) and area under the curve(AUC) were calculated to compare the diagnostic abilities of the DL and SVM models. RESULTS: For the DL model, the sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV and AUC for diagnosing BRVO was 94.0%(95%CI: 93.8%-98.8%), 97.0%(95%CI: 89.7%-96.4%), 96.5%(95%CI: 94.3%-98.7%), 93.2%(95%CI: 90.5%-96.0%) and 0.976(95%CI: 0.960-0.993), respectively. In contrast, for the SVM model, these values were 80.5%(95%CI: 77.8%-87.9%), 84.3%(95%CI: 75.8%-86.1%), 83.5%(95%CI: 78.4%-88.6%), 75.2%(95%CI: 72.1%-78.3%) and 0.857(95%CI: 0.811-0.903), respectively. The DL model outperformed the SVM model in all the aforementioned parameters(P<0.001). CONCLUSION: These results indicate that the combination of the DL model and ultrawide-field fundus ophthalmoscopy may distinguish between healthy and BRVO eyes with a high level of accuracy. The proposed combination may be used for automatically diagnosing BRVO in patients residing in remote areas lacking access to an ophthalmic medical center.

We herein report a facile one-pot synthesis of MnO/N-doped carbon(N—C) composites via a sustainable cotton-template glycineenitrate combustion synthesis to yield superior anode materials for Li ion batteries. MnO nanoparticles with several nanometers were well-embedded in a porous N-doped carbon matrix. It displays the unique characteristics, including the shortened Li^+-ion transport path, increased contact areas with the electrolyte solution, inhibited volume changes and agglomeration of nanoparticles, as well as good conductivity and structural stability during the cycling process, thereby benefiting the superior cycling performance and rate capability. This favorable electrochemical performance of obtained MnO/N—C composites via a one-pot biomass-templated glycine/nitrate combustion synthesis renders the suitability as anode materials for Li-ion batteries.

AIM: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of emergency balloon-occluded retrograde transvenous obliteration(BRTO) for ruptured gastric ***: Emergency BRTO was performed in 17 patients with gastric varices and gastrorenal or gastrocaval shunts within 24 h of hematemesis and/or tarry *** gastric varices were confirmed by endoscopy,and the gastrorenal or gastrocaval shunts were identified by contrast-enhanced computed tomography(CE-CT).A 6-Fr balloon catheter(Cobra type) was inserted into the gastrorenal shunt via the right internal jugular vein,or into the gastrocaval shunt via the right femoral vein,depending on the varices drainage *** sclerosant,5% ethanolamine oleate iopamidol,was injected into the gastric varices through the catheter during balloon *** patients with incom plete thrombosis of the varices after the first BRTO,a second BRTO was performed the following *** were followed up by endoscopy and CE-CT at 1 d,1 wk,and 1,3 and 6 mo after the procedure,and every 6 mo ***: Complete thrombosis of the gastric varices was not achieved with the first BRTO in 7/17 patients because of large gastric *** patients underwent a second BRTO on the next day,and additional sclerosant was injected through the *** thrombosis which led to disappearance of the varices was achieved in 16/17 patients,while the remaining patient had incomplete thrombosis of the *** of the patients experienced rebleeding or recurrence of the gastric varices after a median follow-up of 1130 d(range 8-2739 d).No major complications occurred after the ***,esophageal varices worsened in 5/17 patients after a mean follow-up of 8.6 ***: Emergency BRTO is an effective and safe treatment for ruptured gastric varices.

In this study, we modified a polytetrafluoroethylene （PTFE） hollow-fiber membrane element used for submerged membrane bioreactors （MBRs） to reduce the energy consumption during MBR processes. The high mechanical strength of the PTFE membrane made it possible to increase the effective length of the membrane fiber from 2 to 3 m. In addition, the packing density was increased by 20% by optimizing the membrane element configuration. These modifications improve the efficiency of membrane cleaning associated with aeration. The target of specific energy consumption was less than 0.4 kWh·m^-3 in this study. The continuous operation of a pilot MBR treating real municipal wastewater revealed that the MBR utilizing the modified membrane element can be stably operated under a specific air demand per membrane surface area （SADm） of 0.13 m^3·m^-2. hr I when the daily- averaged membrane fluxes for the constant flow rate and flow rate fluctuating modes of operation were set to 0,6 and 0.5m^3·m^-2·d^-1 respectively. The specific energy consumption under these operating conditions was estimated to be less than 0.37 kWh.m^-3. These results strongly suggest that operating an MBR equipped with the modified membrane element with a specific energy consumption of less than 0.4 kWh·m^-3 is highly possible.

The constant increase in power and heat flux densities encountered in electronic devices fuels a rising demand for lightweight heat sink materials with suitable thermal *** this study,discontinuous pitch-based carbon fiber reinforced aluminum matrix（Al-CF） composites with aluminum–silicon alloy（Al–Si） were fabricated through hot *** small amount of Al–Si contributed to enhance the sintering process in order to achieve fully dense Al–CF composites.A thermal conductivity and CTE of 258 W/（m K） and 7.0 9 10-6/K in the in-plane direction of the carbon fibers were obtained for a（Al95 vol%＋ Al–Si5 vol%）-CF50 vol%*** fiber provides the reducing of CTE while the conservation of thermal conductivity and weight of *** achieved CTEs satisfy the standard requirements for a heat sink material,which furthermore possess a specific thermal conductivity of 109 W cm3/（m K g）.This simple process allows the low-cost fabrication of Al–CF composite,which is applicable for a lightweight heat sink material.

Mechanical properties of 7475 aluminum alloy sheets with fine subgrain structure by warm rolling

The effect of transition elements on grain refinement of 7475 aluminum alloy sheets produced by warm rolling was investigated. The alloy which contains zirconium instead of chromium showed ultra fine structures with stable subgrains after warm rolling at 350 ℃, followed by solution heat treatment at 480 ℃. The average subgrain diameter was approximately 3 pan. It became clear that zirconium in solution has the effect of stabilizing subgrains due to precipitation of fine Al3Zr compounds during warm rolling. On the other hand, chromium-bearing compounds precipitate before warm rolling and they grow up to relatively large size during warm rolling. The warm rolled sheets with fine subgrains have unique properties compared with conventional 7475 aluminum alloy sheets produced by cold rolling. The warm roiled sheets solution heat treated had subgrain structures through the thickness with a high proportion of low-angle boundary less than 15°. The strength of the warm rolled sheets in T6 condition was about 10% higher than that of conventional 7475 aluminum alloy sheets. As the most remarkable point in the warm rolled sheets, the high Lankford （r） value of 3.5 was measured in the orientation of 45° to rolling direction, with the average r-value of 2.2. The high r-value would be derived from well developed r-fiber textures, especially with the strong {011 }（211） brass component. The warm rolled sheets also had high resistance to SCC. From Kikuchi lines analysis and TEM images, it was found that PFZs were hardly formed along the low- angle boundaries of the warm rolled sheets in T6 condition. This would be a factor to lead to the improvement of resistance to SCC because of reducing the difference in electrochemical property between the grain boundary area and the grain interior.
