Ethno-medicinal plants use by the Manipuri tribal community in Bangladesh

An ethno-medicinal investigation was conducted to understand the traditional knowledge of medicinal plants being used by the Maninuri tribe in Bangladesh. The present study was done through structured questionnaires in consultations with the tribal practitioners. A total 32 plant species belonging to 26 families and 29 genera were found to use for Curing 37 ailments. Results show that the use of aboveground plant parts was higher （86%） than the underground plant parts （14%）. Leaf was used in the majority of cases for medicinal preparation （17 species） followed by bark, fruit, root/rhizome, whole plant, seed and flower. Among the 32 plant species, they were mainly used to treat dysentery （10 species）, followed by fever and rheumatism （5 species each）; asthma, constipation, wounds and skin diseases （4 species each）; cold ailments, cough and diarrhea （3 species each）. The study revealed that 72% plant species investigated were used to cure more than one ailment. About 75% medicinal plants were taken orally followed by externally （9%） and both orally and externally （16%）. The study thus underscores the potentials of the ethno-botanical research and the need for the documentation of indigenous healthcare knowledge pertaining to the medicinal plant utilization for the greater benefit of mankind.

The study was aimed to enhance the nutritional quality of sponge cakes with oyster mushroom (Pleurotus sajor-caju). In this study, the physicochemical, functional, and sensory properties of cake supplemented with five different levels of mushroom powder (0 as control, 5%, 7%, 10%, and 12%) were evaluated. The results revealed that both hot air dried (HD) and freeze dried (FD) mushroom powder contained a higher amount of protein, fat, ash and fiber ontent compared with wheat flour used in cake, but the carbohydrate and moisture content showed the reverse trend. The study also found that increasing the level of fortification from 0% to 12% mushroom powder also increased the protein, fat, ash, and fiber content in the cake. FD mushroom powder significantly (p ≤ 0.05) recorded the highest protein (11.72% - 15.16%), fat (20.01% - 21.9%), ash (1.75% - 1.92%), and fiber (1.39% - 1.74%) with increasing the level of supplementation from 5% - 12%. In contrast, carbohydrate content of cake decreased from 34.13% - 31.15% with increasing the level of FD mushroom from 5% - 12%. Also, the volume and weight of the cake with FD mushroom were higher compared to HD and control sample. The results of sensory evaluation indicated that sponge cake with 10% FD oyster mushroom was rated the most acceptable after the control.

Information collection from remote location is very important for several tasks such as temperate monitoring, air quality investigation, and wartime surveillance. Wireless sensor network is the first choice to complete these types of tasks. Basically, information prediction scheme is an important feature in any sensor nodes. The efficiency of the sensor network can be improved to large extent with a suitable information prediction scheme. Previously, there were several efforts to resolve this problem, but their accuracy is decreased as the prediction threshold reduces to a small value. Our proposed Adams-Bashforth-Moulton algorithm to overcome this drawback was compared with the Milne Simpson scheme. The proposed algorithm is simulated on distributed sensor nodes where information is gathered from the Intel Berkeley Research Laboratory. To maximize the power saving in wireless sensor network, our adopted method achieves the accuracy of 60.28 and 59.2238 for prediction threshold of 0.01 for Milne Simpson and Adams-Bashforth-Moulton algorithms, respectively.

Evaluation of Anxiolytic and Sedative-Like Activities of Methanolic Extract of Euphorbia hirtaLeaves in Mice

In indigenous or folk medicine, Euphorbia hirta is a very popular herb and used as a palliative to treat various ailments including intestinal parasites, diarrhoea, vomiting, amoebic dysentery, asthma, bronchitis, emphysema, coughs, kidney stones, menstrual problems etc. The objective of this study is to evaluate the anxiolytic and sedative-like effects of the methanol extract from the leaves of Euphorbia hirta (Euphorbiaceae). Methanolic extract of Euphorbia hirta was evaluated for its CNS depression effect using mice behavioral models such as, elevated plus maze and hole board test for its anxiolytic potential where hole cross and pentobarbital-induced sleeping time tests were performed for its sedative properties, respectively. The test group received three different doses of the MEHL (100 mg/kg, 200 mg/kg and 300 mg/kg) orally. The positive control group received diazepam (1 mg/kg) orally where the negative control group received distilled water (10 ml/kg) orally. In elevated plus maze test, the extract exhibited significant (p d the number of open arm entry and time spent in open arm by mice compared to control group. In addition, the number of head dips and hole crosses significantly (p y mice in hole board and hole cross tests respectively, compared to control group. Moreover, mice treated with MEHL significantly decrease the onset of sleep and increase the duration of sleep in pentobarbital-induced sleeping time test in mice compared to control group. The data obtained from the present study clearly demonstrate that the methanolic extract of Euphorbia hirta has potential anxiolytic and sedative-like activity in the animal behavioral models. And the findings represent a rational explanation for its use in traditional medicine for the management of neurological disorder.

In Bangladesh, there are thousands of textile-dying industries spread across the country’s many regions, the majority of which involve knitting and dying. The dyeing industry uses an enormous quantity of water, as well as colors and chemicals. After the dying process has been completed, they also release a significant amount of wastewater. Cotton, wool, and polyester fiber are typically dyed with textile dyes such as reactive, acid, and disperse dyes. These dyes are utilized most frequently in the respective sectors. The dyes’ colorants are extremely poisonous and dangerous to all forms of life, including aquatic life and living things. The present work has been intended to investigate whether or not it is practicable to remove commonly used textile dyes simultaneously from an aqueous dye solution using an adsorption technique that makes use of a variety of different adsorbents. This study focuses on the removal of color from two distinct types of dyes—Methylene Blue and Reactive Blue-250 which are cationic and anionic in nature respectively, using two different types of activated carbon adsorbents prepared from sawdust and fish scale. Dye removal capacity was tested as a function of contact time, the dosage of the adsorbent, pH during the treatment process, temperature and initial concentration of dye. The applicability of the Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms in describing experimental data was investigated. The micro and mesoporous activated carbon prepared from sawdust and fish scale identified by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) images indicated that such adsorbents with a large surface area have more dye adsorption potential whereas the variation in dye adsorption occurs due to variation in surface area. From the overall experimental data, maximum removal of 95.39% and 87.92% was found for Methylene Blue and Reactive Blue-250 respectively by sawdust, and 90.64% removal of Methylene Blue by using fish scale.

为了有效去除聚对苯二甲酸乙二酯(PET)微塑料,采用碱性水解方法将PET微塑料升级再造,制备缺陷铁基金属有机框架(Fe-MOFs)催化剂,用于催化臭氧深度处理模拟印染废水.结果表明,在Na OH浓度为2mol/L、水解温度120℃、水解时间120min的条件下,PET微塑料去除率达100%,对苯二甲酸钠盐(Na_(2)TPA)产率达97.4%;以PET微塑料水解产物为前驱体,发展了2种简易方法制备缺陷型Fe-MOFs催化剂.通过扫描电子显微镜(SEM)、X射线粉末衍射仪(PXRD)、傅里叶红外光谱仪(FT-IR)及X射线光电子能谱仪(XPS)等对缺陷Fe-MOFs催化剂的形貌特征、晶体结构、分子结构以及元素种类进行表征,证明催化剂具有缺陷结构.研究评估了2种催化剂催化臭氧降解AO-7性能,其中D-Fe-MOF催化剂可在3min内完全降解AO-7,反应速率常数达0.926min^(-1),是W-Fe-MOF催化剂和单独臭氧的3.6倍和7.3倍.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is one of the most common hemoglobinopathies, which is caused by the replacement of glutamic acid with valine at the sixth position of the beta-globin amino acid chain which sickling of the entire red blood cells in the homozygous (Hb S/S) condition. There are many analyses and screening procedures were developed to detect sickle cell anemia in the early age of birth, especially from heel prick blood, but in case of developing countries, it would be more acceptable to detect sickle cell disorder using umbilical cord blood just after birth rather than using heel prick blood. In this study, umbilical cord blood (UCB) was used to detect β-hemoglobin gene and sickle cell disorder. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) based analysis was done using two primers (wild-type and mutant type) to detect this disorder. A total number of 22 samples were enrolled in this experiment for PCR amplification among which nineteen samples were identified by amplification of both 267 bp and 517 bp fragments revealing heterozygous sickle cell trait (Hb A/S), whereas three samples were found to amplify of 517 bp only revealing healthy individuals. The result from PCR analysis was then collaborated with the information of the mothers of each sample to analyze the result more conveniently and found that the mothers of all individuals except the three samples had anemia or mild form of anemia, thus it was expected that the newborn might have anemia trait (Hb A/S) the exception was found in case of sample No. 9 and sample No. 15. Both samples showed the bands on 267 bp and 517 bp thus expressed the sickle cell disease trait although the mothers of these samples were not anemic. However, no samples were recorded having sickle cell anemia (9 Hb S/S). The inherent simplicity and low cost of this PCR based analysis with umbilical cord blood will be considered as an effective tool in future newborn screening in Bangladesh.

In this paper, we are interested to find the most sensitive parameter, local and global stability of ovarian tumor growth model. For sensitivity analysis, we use Latin Hypercube Sampling (LHS) method to generate sample points and Partial Rank Correlation Coefficient (PRCC) method, uses those sample points to find out which parameters are important for the model. Based on our findings, we suggest some treatment strategies. We investigate the sensitivity of the parameters for tumor volume, y, cell nutrient density, Q and maximum tumor size, ymax. We also use Scatter Plot method using LHS samples to show the consistency of the results obtained by using PRCC. Moreover, we discuss the qualitative analysis of ovarian tumor growth model investigating the local and global stability.

The present paper deals with the multiple solutions and their stability analy- sis of non-Newtonian micropolar nanofluid slip flow past a shrinking sheet in the presence of a passively controlled nanoparticle boundary condition. The Lie group transformation is used to find the similarity transformations which transform the governing transport equations to a system of coupled ordinary differential equations with boundary condi- tions. These coupled set of ordinary differential equation is then solved using the Runge- kutta-Fehlberg fourth-fifth order （RkF45） method and the ode15s solver in MATLAB. For stability analysis, the eigenvalue problem is solved to check the physically realizable solution. The upper branch is found to be stable, whereas the lower branch is unsta- ble. The critical values （turning points） for suction （0 〈 sc 〈 s） and the shrinking parameter （Xc 〈 X 〈 0） are also shown graphically for both no-slip and multiple-slip conditions. Multiple regression analysis for the stable solution is carried out to inves- tigate the impact of various pertinent parameters on heat transfer rates, The Nusselt number is found to be a decreasing function of the thermophoresis and Brownian motion parameters.
