Understanding turbulence kinetic energy（TKE） budget in gas-liquid two-phase bubbly flows is indispensable to develop and improve turbulence models for the bubbly *** measurement of velocity and velocity gradients with spatial resolution smaller than the Kolmogorov scale is required to evaluate the TKE budget *** therefore proposed a molecular tagging velocimetry based on photobleaching reaction（PB-MTV） and applied it to turbulent flows in a square duct to demonstrate the possibility of evaluation of TKE *** the accuracy of measured velocity and velocity gradients were examined in the previous study,the accuracy of the TKE budget has not been examined yet due to lack of information on the TKE *** this study,we measure TKE budget in a turbulent water flow in a square duct by using the PB-MTV at the same turbulent Reynolds number condition as DNS data provided by Iwamoto,and compare the measured data with the DNS data to validate PB-MTV for evaluation of TKE *** photobleaching is an irreversible photodegradation of a fluorescent dye induced by intense ***（fluoresceine sodium salt） is used for the fluorescent dye which is photobleached by an intense laser beam（wave length λ = 488.0 nm） to form a molecular *** and velocity gradients are evaluated from translation and deformation of the molecular tag between two consecutive images with a time interval δt,*** size of the tag is about 40 to 100 micrometers,and smaller than the Kolmogorov scale in the turbulent *** cross-section and length of the duct are 50×50 mm and 1.6 m,*** measured result indicates that the TKE budget evaluated by PB-MTV agrees well with the DNS *** PB-MTV is also applied to turbulent bubbly flows in the square duct.

Flow and geochemical modeling of drainage from Tomitaka mine,Miyazaki,Japan

The chemistry and flow of water in the abandoned Tomitaka mine of Miyazaki, western Japan were investigated. This mine is located in a non-ferrous metal deposit and acid mine drainage issues from it. The study was undertaken to estimate the quantities of mine drainage that needs to be treated in order to avoid acidification of local rivers, taking into account seasonal variations in rainfall. Numerical models aimed to reproduce observed water levels and fluxes and chemical variations of groundwater and mine drainage. Rock–water interactions that may explain the observed variations in water chemistry are proposed. The results show that：（1） rain water infiltrates into the deeper bedrock through a highly permeable zone formed largely by stopes that are partially filled with spoil from excavations（ore minerals and host rocks）;（2） the water becomes acidic（p H from 3 to 4） as dissolved oxygen oxidizes pyrite;（3） along the flow path through the rocks, the redox potential of the water becomes reducing, such that pyrite becomes stable and p H of the mine drainage becomes neutral; and（4） upon leaving the mine, the drainage becomes acidic again due to oxidation of pyrite in the rocks. The present numerical model with considering of the geochemical characteristics can simulate the main variations in groundwater flow and water levels in and around the Tomitaka mine, and apply to the future treatment of the mine drainage.

Development of a validation technique for road surface profile applicable to point cloud data

In recent years,various information and communication technology(ICT)devices measuring three-dimensional(3D)point cloud data have been developed and widely used for the application of pavement surface ***,ICT devices have generally been developed not only for measuring road surface profiles but for various geo-reference point *** this background,the validation of surface profiles acquired with ICT devices fulfils an important role in proving the reliability of measurement result composed by point *** study proposes a wavelet transform agreement(WTA)which involves a normalization factor of profile amplitude for further improvement in the wavelet-based coherence *** WTA analysis allows evaluating similarity/dissimilarity of two profiles considering both the location and wavelength *** this purpose,a terrestrial laser scanner(TLS),a mobile mapping system(MMS),and an unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV)are employed to prove the advantage of WTA in practical *** a result,the advantages of WTA analysis are clearly recognized in the optimization for the measurement interval of TLS,the multi-line measurement of MMS for ride quality improvement of a pavement,and the efficient operation of UAV in terms of the flight *** paper also shows the identification of aging development for surface roughness over time in terms of locations and *** findings help not only to guarantee the accuracy of profile measurements but to realize the sophisticated way of using 3D point clouds acquired with ICT *** outcomes of this study contribute to the increase of productivity for pavement works with improving the quality of surface profile measurement.

Measuring and evaluating of road roughness conditions with a compact road profiler and ArcGIS

With a wide range of requirements throughout the world, high-quality road management is subject to increasing demand from a perspective of customer-oriented levels of service. In recent years, road administrators are requested to create a visual map of a road network to monitor conditions. To fulfill these requirements, this study conducted as follows. Firstly, this paper introduces a new compact road profiler to collect the profile data at ease. Using the international roughness index （IRI） to assess public roads in local cities of Japan＇s Hokkaido prefecture, this study also provides real-time monitoring of pavement roughness conditions. Moreover, this study deals with an effective method for visualizing collected IRI data as an attribute in a geographic information system （GIS） and the database of Japan digital road map （DRM）. Secondly, the authors present the measurement results of IRI at two different cities during different seasons by using GIS to compare the road conditions. According to the results clarified on different statistical characteristics of road profiles, this study recommends that it is necessary to establish pavement management system （PMS） in consideration of road class, network of local city, and evaluation and management of road conditions in winter quantitatively. Finally, the authors measure and evaluate ride quality by assessing differences between the inner wheel path （IWP） and outer wheel path （OWP） of the vehicle into account, using the previously mentioned profilers and the driving simulator, which is called KITDS. Results show that information from both wheel paths contributes to improve current monitoring process regarding pavement surface, and expects to construct a high level of PMS for road administration in the future.

Colorectal cancer(CRC)is the second leading cause of cancer related mortality,though improvements in CRC screening,systemic and local treatment,and surgical technique have steadily won victories in the battle against CRC,and the rate of mortality from CRC is steadily declining(1).However,perhaps no clinical-oncologic scenario is as unstandardized as the management of colorectal-liver metastases(CRLM)and their evaluation for consideration of resectability.

On-line Monitoring of Epoxy Resin Exposed to Acid Solution

In this study, a new on-line health monitoring technology for the determination of the penetration of environment solution into epoxy resin was pursued. A corrosion sensor including plastic optical fiber and pH indicator was fabricated. The color-change layer of this sensor appeared after immersion in sulfuric acid solution, which could be examined by using optical fiber and spectrophotometer. The results showed that the penetration of sulfuric acid was detected by adding bromophenol blue （BPB） in the corrosion sensor. This system could be applied to on-line health monitoring of chemical equipment structures.

Mutation analysis of ATP13A2 in early-onset parkinsonism patients

BACKGROUND： A recent study has found that ATP13A2 is the causative gene for PARK9-linked autosomal recessive early-onset parkinsonism, described previously in Jordanian and Chilean families （Kufor-Rakeb syndrome）. OBJECTIVE： To screen eastern Asian patients with early-onset parkinsonism for mutations in ATP13A2 and to describe positron emission tomography （PET） findings of PARK9-linked parkinsonism. DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING： In total, 117 patients were selected from the Department of Neurology, Juntendo University, from February 2003 to October 2006, for this molecular genetics and case-control study. PARTICIPANTS： The patients with parkinsonism consist of two cohorts. Ninety four patients with onset age of less than 30 years were selected for the first cohort. They included 49 males and 44 females, comprising 73 Japanese, 9 Korean, 8 Taiwan Residents, and 4 Mainland Chinese. Eleven patients had parkinsonism complicated with dementia, 15 patients had family histories of parkinsonism （including 2 families）, and 5 patients were from consanguineous parents （including one family）. The second cohort of 23 patients was composed of patients with consanguineous parents （n = 15） or who had affected siblings （n = 6） or both （n = 2）, but the age at onset ranged from 30 to 50 years. METHODS： In 117 patients with parkinsonism, direct sequencing of ATP13A2 exons 13, 16, and 26, in which mutations had been reported previously, were performed. Sequencing was also performed in all 29 exons, including splice sites, in 28 probands who showed homozygosity at the PARK9 locus by haplotype analysis. Mutation analysis was also performed in 150 normal people. Linkage analysis was performed on all 3 parkinsonism families using short tandem repeat markers flanking the PARK9 locus. Visualization framework for CAVE virtual reality systems

A Medical Hypothesis: Excessive Adaptation Results in Relative Hypothermia and Lymphocytopenia, as Seen in Carnivorous Aquatic Mammals

Body temperature is an important clinical indicator of health and illness. Many studies of human body temperature have been conducted;however, there are no studies that compare the body temperatures of humans and other homeothermic animals. Twenty-six homeothermic animal species, including humans, were selected and characteristics of their internal environment were studied based on previous reports. The studied species were divided into two groups based on habitat (eight aquatic and eighteen terrestrial species) and three groups based on diet (carnivores, herbivores, and omnivores). Body temperatures, erythrocyte counts, and lymphocyte percentages were compared between species and between groups. Our results showed that carnivores had lower body temperatures and erythrocyte numbers than herbivores, and lower lymphocyte ratios than both herbivores and omnivores. Aquatic mammals that experienced a second adaptation event during their evolutionary process had lower body temperatures and lymphocyte ratios than terrestrial animals. These results suggest that excessive adaptation induced by stress or a change in environment may result in relative hypothermia and lymphocytopenia, features that aquatic mammals with stressful evolutionary backgrounds share with human cancer patients. However, our study is based on analysis of previous observations and reports, and further research (e.g., larger-scale studies) is needed to support this hypothesis.
