This work focuses on the problem of monitoring the coastline, which in Portugal’s case means monitoring 3007 kilometers, including 1793 maritime borders with the Atlantic ocean to the south and west. The human burden on the coast becomes a problem, both because erosion makes the cliffs unstable and because pollution increases, making the fragile dune ecosystem difficult to preserve. It is becoming necessary to increase the control of access to beaches, even if it is not a popular measure for internal and external tourism. The methodology described can also be used to monitor maritime borders. The use of images acquired in the infrared range guarantees active surveillance both day and night, the main objective being to mimic the infrared cameras already installed in some critical areas along the coastline. Using a series of infrared photographs taken at low angles with a modified camera and appropriate filter, a recent deep learning algorithm with the right training can simultaneously detect and count whole people at close range and people almost completely submerged in the water, including partially visible targets, achieving a performance with F1 score of 0.945, with 97% of targets correctly identified. This implementation is possible with ordinary laptop computers and could contribute to more frequent and more extensive coverage in beach/border surveillance, using infrared cameras at regular intervals. It can be partially automated to send alerts to the authorities and/or the nearest lifeguards, thus increasing monitoring without relying on human resources.

Forgiveness and Chronic Pain: A Cohort Study

Background: Chronic pain is a major public health issue. It is a complex condition comprising biological, social and psychological elements, which can be challenging to manage. Forgiveness is a recognised effective intervention in various health conditions. Research has shown promising results using forgiveness as an intervention in the management of pain. This study aims to examine the relationship between forgiveness and other variables in patients suffering from chronic pain in the setting of a chronic pain clinic. Methods: Institutional ethical approval was granted for this study. Patients attending a chronic pain clinic for the first time were invited to complete a questionnaire comprising a brief socio-demographic survey and questionnaires including the Heartland Forgiveness Scale, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, Pain and Anxiety Symptoms Scale and Perceived Injustice. Results: 104 adult patients were included. The mean age was 59 years. Back pain was the most common chronic pain presentation. The Heartland Forgiveness Scale (HFS) was found to have a good internal consistency among the Irish population. This study found that 55% of patients attending the pain clinic were not forgiving. Negative correlations were identified between forgiveness and pain, and forgiveness and injustice. Conclusion: The majority of patients attending a chronic pain clinic were not forgiving as measured on the HFS. There was a negative correlation between forgiveness and pain. The results have shown that forgiveness could be beneficial as a therapeutic intervention among patients attending a chronic pain clinic.

Sandwich structures are widespread in engineering applications because of their advantageous mechanical properties. Recently, their acoustic performance has also been improved to enable attenuation of low-frequency vibrations induced by noisy environments. Here, we propose a new design of sandwich plates(SPs) featuring a metamaterial core with an actively tunable low-frequency bandgap. The core contains magnetorheological elastomer(MRE) resonators which are arranged periodically and enable controlling wave attenuation by an external magnetic field. We analytically estimate the sound transmission loss(STL) of the plate using the space harmonic expansion method. The low frequency sound insulation performance is also analyzed by the equivalent dynamic density method, and the accuracy of the obtained results is verified by finite-element simulations. our results demonstrate that the STL of the proposed plate is enhanced compared with a typical SP analog, and the induced bandgap can be effectively tuned to desired frequencies. This study further advances the field of actively controlled acoustic metamaterials, and paves the way to their practical applications.

Red blood cells(RBCs)are the most abundant human blood *** aggregation and deformation strongly determine blood viscosity which impacts hemorheology and *** turn,RBC properties depend on di®erent endogenous and exogenous *** such factor is nitric oxide(No),which is mainly produced by endothelial cells(EC)from L-arginine amino acid in the circulatory *** the mechanisms of the RBC-endothelium interplay are not clear up to date and considering its possible clinical importance,the aims of this study are to investigate in vitro:(1)The e®ect of L-arginine induced No on RBC aggregation and adhesion to endothelium;(2)the No e®ect on RBC aggregation and deformation induced by L-arginine and sodium nitroprusside without the presence of endothelium in the *** RBC aggregation and adhesion to a monolayer of EC were studied using optical tweezers(oT).The RBC deformability and aggregation without endothelium in the samples were studied using the°ow chamber method and Myrenne *** con¯rmed that No increases deformability and decreases aggregation of *** showed that the soluble guanylate cyclase pathway appears to be the only No signaling pathway *** the samples with the endothelium,the\bell-shaped"dependence of RBC aggregation force on L-arginine concentration was observed,which improves our knowledge about the process of No production by ***,data related to L-arginine accumulation by endothelium were obtained:Necessity of the presence of extracellular L-arginine stated by other authors was put under *** our study,No decreased the RBC-endothelium adhesion,however,the tendency appeared to be weak and was not con¯rmed in another set of *** our knowledge,this is the¯rst attempt to measure the forces of RBC adhesion to endothelium monolayer with oT.

BACKGRoUND In patients with metastatic colorectal cancer(mCRC),the treatment options are limited and have been proved to be affected by rat sarcoma virus(RAS)mutational *** RAS wild-type(wt)patients,the combination of antiepidermal growth factor receptor(EGFR)monoclonal antibodies with chemotherapy(CT)is more effective than CT *** the other hand,RAS-mutated patients are not eligible for treatment with anti-EGFR *** SUMMARY Eleven patients with initially RAS-mutated mCRC were followed from diagnosis to May *** the time of cell-free DNA determination,five patients had undergone one CT line,five patients had undergone two CT lines,and one patient had undergone three CT lines(all in combination with bevacizumab).At the second and third treatment lines[second line(2L),third line(3L)],patients with neo-RAS wt received a combination of CT and *** neo-RAS wt patients treated with anti-EGFR,our findings indicated an increase in progression-free survival for both 2L and 3L(14.5 mo,P=0.119 and 3.9 mo,P=0.882,respectively).Regarding 2L overall survival,we registered a slight increase in neo-RAS wt patients treated with anti-EGFR(33.6 mo vs 32.4 mo,P=0.385).At data cut-off,two patients were still alive:A RAS-mutated patient undergoing 3L treatment and a neo-RAS wt patient who received 2L treatment with anti-EGFR(ongoing).CoNCLUSIoN our case series demonstrated that monitoring RAS mutations in mCRC by liquid biopsy may provide an additional treatment line for neo-RAS wt patients.
