Sorption and desorption behavior of residual antidepressants and caffeine in freshwater sediment and sewage sludge

The use of antidepressants is widespread in modern times. Thus, they present a potential risk for ecosystems due to occurrence in domestic sewage containing unaltered metabolites and structures, even after the treatment plants have processed the sewage. The current research investigated the sorption and desorption of antidepressants(citalopram, venlafaxine, fluoxetine, sertraline, and amitriptyline) and caffeine from freshwater sediment and sewage sludge. The samples of freshwater sediment were collected in a river spring in an area with few anthropogenic sources of pollution and samples of sewage sludge were taken from stabilization ponds of a sewage treatment. The matrices were mainly composed of organic fractions, sediment of humic nature, and aliphatic biomolecules in sludges. The presence of silt and clay in the sediment proved to be important for the sorption process when compared to the flocs and colloidal structure of the sludge. The kinetic study indicated pseudo-first order behavior. The Freundlich isotherm was satisfactorily used in the interpretation of sorption and desorption for all analytes and matrices. The high percentages obtained for desorption suggest analyte mobility, which is more intense in the sludge than in the sediment since each matrix has a different composition. It can be considered that the information obtained here reinforces the ecotoxicological concern with respect to pharmacological residues in the environment, as processes of retention by sorption in the sludge and the sediment have been confirmed, as well as the preferential partition of some analytes by the aqueous phase.

Comparative stability analyses of traditional and selective room-and-pillar mining techniques for sub-horizontal tungsten veins

The stability and productivity concerning a modification on the traditional room and pillar for a new selective technique at the Portuguese Panasqueira Mine have been *** traditional room-and-pillar stoping uses 5.0-m wide rooms with 3.0 m×3.0 m pillars,while the selective room-and-pillar mining technique consists in stoping with rooms of 4.0 m wide and pillars of 4 m×4 m with a subsequent selective cutting of the quartz veins at the mid pillar of approximately 0.5 m high,to obtain a pillar section with an area of 3.0 m×3.0 *** stability and productivity analyses indicate that the selective technique obtains smaller average pillar safety factor,more rock mass displacement,more extraction and selectivity ratios,and ore grade improvement,compared with the traditional *** results show that the selective technique is also more *** proposed selective room-and-pillar mining technique is applicable to any sub-horizontal narrow quartz veins with wolfram,gold,*** as the famous La Rinconada gold mine in the Peruvian Andes.

The biodiversity of myxomycetes in central Chile

The results obtained from two expeditions to survey the biodiversity of myxomycetes in Central Chile are reported in this *** surveys were carried out as part of Global Biodiversity of Eumycetozoans project funded by the National Science Foundation(USA)and the Myxotropic project funded by the Spanish *** expeditions were made to the temperate zone of the central part of the country between 23°and 39°South latitudes,which is characterized by Mediterranean vegetation,as well as to the transition areas between the arid and semi-arid regions of northern Chile,and the humid,cold Valdivian and Andean-Patagonian forests of the far *** of the fifteen regions of the country,from Antofagasta to Araucanía,in selected areas where the native vegetation is well preserved,were included in these *** 600 collections were obtained,and a total of 110 species of myxomycetes representing 29 genera have been *** of these(Dianema succulenticola,Didymium chilense)are species new to science and are described in this paper,12 species(Collaria nigricapillitia,Comatricha alta,Cribraria oregana,Dianema depressum,Didymium eximium,***,Enerthenema melanospermum,Lepidoderma chailletii,Macbrideola ovoidea,Physarum clavisporum,*** and Trichia alpina)were previously unknown for either the Neotropics or South America,and 49 additional species are new records for *** are provided on the morphology,distribution and ecology of selected species and light and SEM micrographs of the most significant species are *** evaluation of the biodiversity of myxomycetes in Chile,with special emphasis on the endemic plants that provided the substrates with which they were associated,and a comparative analysis of our results with those from other countries of South America is presented.

Methionine adenosyltransferases(MATs)are essential enzymes for life as they produce S-adenosylmethionine(SAMe),the biological methyl donor required for a plethora of reactions within the *** systems express two genes,MAT1A and MAT2A,which encode for MATα1 and MATα2,the catalytic subunits of the MAT isoenzymes,respectively.A third gene MAT2B,encodes a regulatory subunit known as MATβwhich controls the activity of MATα***1A,which is mainly expressed in hepatocytes,maintains the differentiated state of these cells,whilst MAT2A and MAT2B are expressed in extrahepatic tissues as well as non-parenchymal cells of the liver(e.g.,hepatic stellate and Kupffer cells).The biosynthesis of SAMe is impaired in patients with chronic liver disease and liver cancer due to decreased expression and inactivation of MATα1.A switch from MAT1A to MAT2A/MAT2B occurs in multiple liver diseases and during liver growth and dedifferentiation,but this change in the expression pattern of MATs results in reduced hepatic SAMe *** of study have utilized the Mat1a-knockout(KO)mouse that spontaneously develops non-alcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH)and hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)to elucidate a variety of mechanisms by which MAT proteins dysregulation contributes to liver *** increasing volume of work indicates that MATs have SAMe-independent functions,distinct interactomes and multiple subcellular *** we aim to provide an overview of MAT biology including genes,isoenzymes and their regulation to provide the context for understanding consequences of their *** will highlight recent breakthroughs in the field and underscore the importance of MAT’s in liver tumorigenesis as well as their potential as targets for cancer therapy.

Bioguided isolation of antimicrobial polyphenols from Cuspidaria convoluta leaves and their synergistic effect with antibiotics

Use of geochemical fingerprints to trace sediment sources in an agricultural catchment of Argentina
