Quantitative trait loci associated with soybean seed weight and composition under different phosphorus levels

Seed size and composition are important traits in food crops and can be affected by nutrient availability in the soil. Phosphorus （P） is a non-renewable, essential macronutrient, and P deficiency limits soybean （G1ycine max） yield and quality. To investigate the associations of seed traits in low- and high-P environ- ments, soybean recombinant inbred lines （RILs） from a cross of cultivars Fiskeby III and mandarin （Ottawa） were grown under contrasting P availability environments. Traits including individual seed weight, seed number, and intact mature pod weight were significantly affected by soil P levels and showed transgressive segregation among the RILs. Surprisingly, P treatments did not affect seed composition or weight, suggesting that soybeanmaintains sufficient P in seeds even in Iow-P soil. Quantitative trait loci （QTLs） were detected for seed weight, intact pods, seed volume, and seed protein, with five significant QTLs identified in Iow-P environments and one significant QTL found in the optimaI-P environment. Broad-sense heritability estimates were 0.78 （individual seed weight）, *** （seed protein）, 0.34 （seed oil）, and 0.98 （seed number）. The QTLs identified under low P point to genetic regions that may be useful to improve soybean performance under limiting P conditions.

Lattice distortion releasing local surface strain on high-entropy alloys

High-entropy alloys(HEAs)have the potential to be a paradigm-shift for rational catalyst discovery but this new type of alloy requires a completely new approach to predict the surface *** addition to the ligand effect perturbing the surface–adsorbate bond,the random configuration of elements in the surface will also induce local strain effects due to the varying radii of neighboring *** modelling of HEA surface reactivity requires an estimate of this effect:To what degree is the adsorption of intermediates on these lattice distorted atomic environments affected by local strain?In this study,more than 3,500 density functional theory(DFT)calculated adsorption energies of*OH and*O adsorbed on the HEAs IrPdPtRhRu and AgAuCuPdPt are statistically analyzed with respect to the lattice constants of the alloys and the surfaces of each individual binding *** is found that the inherent distortion of the lattice structure in HEAs releases the local strain effect on the adsorption energy as the atomic environment surrounding the binding atom(s)settles into a relaxed *** is even observed to be true for clusters of atoms of which the sizes deviate significantly from the atomic environment in which they are *** elucidates an important aspect of binding site interaction with the neighboring atoms and thus constitutes a step towards a more accurate theoretical model of estimating the reactivity of HEA surfaces.

Efficient Solution of a Generalized Eigenvalue Problem Arising in a Thermoconvective Instability

The aim of this paper is to develop an efficient numerical method to compute the eigenvalues of the stability analysis of a problem describing the motion of a fluid within a cylindrical container heated non-homogeneously from *** axisymmetric stationary motion settles in,at certain values of the external parameters appearing in the set of partial differential equations modeling the *** basic solution is computed by discretizing the equations with a Chebyshev collocation *** linear stability is formulated with a generalized eigenvalue *** numerical approach(generalized Arnoldi method)uses the idea of preconditioning the eigenvalue problem with a modified Cayley transformation before applying the Arnoldi *** works have dealt with transformations requiring regularity to one of the *** this article we extend those results to the case in which that submatrix is *** method allows a fast computation of the critical eigenvalues which determine whether the steady flow is stable or *** algorithm based on this method is compared to the QZ method and is found to be computationally more *** reliability of the computed eigenvalues in terms of stability is confirmed via pseudospectra calculations.

Test Standards for Direct Steam Generating Solar Concentrators

There are a few standards reported in the literature for testing and evaluation of thermal performance of solar concentrators based on sensible heating of working fluid. The preceding standard measures only the cooking efficiency and cooking capacity. Apart from thermal efficiency, there is an imperative need for other important parameters of the solar concentrators such as its stagnation temperature, cooking capacity, cost per watts delivered, weight of the cooker, ease of handling and aesthetics. The characterization of a concentrator at its operating temperature settles appropriate size and type of concentrator for any thermal application. The performance test is conducted at Chandwad (20.3292°N, 74.2444°E), maharashtra and the proposed protocol aims for evaluation of thermal performance of solar cooking system and standardization of reporting the test results so that anyone can easily recognize and use it.

Is Anarchism Inevitable？ A Critique of Simmons＇ Treatment of Natural Duty Accounts of Political Obligation

Are citizens morally obligated to obey and support their states "Political Obligations and Authority" is perhaps A. John Simmons" most comprehensive summary of his mature views on this enduring philosophical problem. In this essay, Simmons critically engages Plato"s dialogue Crito and culls from it three types of strategies for justifying political obligations: natural duty, associative, and transactional. Simmons argues that natural duty accounts are inherently incapable of providing moral grounding for political obligations, disqualifies both associative and transactional accounts on empirical grounds, and settles for a form of anarchism. I argue, assuming as Simmons does in this essay that natural duties imply obligations of support and obedience to political institutions, that the natural duty strategy promises to provide an escape route out of anarchism.

Hot electron effects on the operation of potential well barrier diodes

A study has just been carried out on hot electron effects in GaAs/Al0.3Ga0.7As potential well barrier(PWB)diodes using both monte Carlo(mC)and drift-diffusion(DD)models of charge *** show the operation and behaviour of the diode in terms of electric field,mean electron velocity and potential,mean energy of electrons andΓ-valley *** mC model predicts lower currents flowing through the diode due to back scattering at anode(collector)and carrier heating at higher *** a bias of 1.0 V,the current density obtained from experimental result,mC and DD simulation models are 1.35,1.12 and1.77μA/μm^2 *** reduction in current over conventional model,is compensated to a certain extent because less charge settles in the potential well and so the barrier is slightly *** DD model results in higher currents under the same bias and ***,at very low bias specifically,up to 0.3 V without any carrier heating effects,the DD and mC models look pretty similar as experimental *** significant differences observed in the I-V characteristics of the DD and mC models at higher biases confirm the importance of energy transport when considering these devices.
