Indicators of fatal outcome in severe Plasmodium falciparum malaria:a study in a tertiary-care hospital in Thailand

Objective:To illustrate the clinical features and investigate the indicators associated with a fatal outcome in adult patients with severe Plasmodium falciparum malaria admitted to the Hospital for Tropical Diseases,Bangkok,***:We studied 202 adult malaria patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.A total of 43 clinical variables were identified by univariate and logistic regression analyses,to eliminate confounding ***:Regarding the statistical methods,only 6 variables-jaundice,cerebral malaria,metabolic acidosis,body mass index,initial respiratory rate,and white blood cell count-were significant indicators of death, with adjusted odds ratios(95%CI) of 15.2(2.1-32.3).4.3(2.3-12.6),3.3(2.3-5.7),2.4(1.9-3.5),2.2 (1.5-2.6),and 1.7(1.2-3.1),***:Our study found that jaundice,cerebral malaria,metabolic acidosis,body mass index,initial respiratory rate and white blood cell count were indicators of fatal outcome in severe Plasmodium falciparum *** studies on the fatal indicators in severe malaria need to be compared with data from different geographical areas,to construct practical measures to address potentially fatal indicators in different settings.

The development of novel drugs to overcome the current global coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)is an important *** antiviral agents have been investigated,one of the important goals of treatment is also to control the biological response to the infection.A series of elegant basic studies have revealed that lysophosphatidylserine(LysoPS)might play important roles in inflammation through three kinds of G protein-coupled receptors[1];LysoPS reportedly suppresses activation of T cells[2]and secretion of inflammatory cytokines from macrophages[3]and promotes phagocytosis of apoptotic cells,including apoptotic neutrophils,by macrophages[4].

Implantation of esophageal cancer onto post-dissection ulcer after gastric endoscopic submucosal dissection

A case in which implantation of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma onto a post-dissection gastric ulcer was strongly suspected is presented. A 72-yearold man with alcoholic liver cirrhosis underwent esophagogastroduodenoscopy(EGD). Esophageal cancer(EC)(Mt, 20 mm, 0-Is) and gastric cancer(GC)(antrum, 15 mm, 0-Ⅱc) were identified. Biopsy specimens revealed moderately differentiated squamous cell carcinoma(SCC) and differentiated adenocarcinoma, respectively. The GC was resected by endoscopic submucosal dissection(ESD) [14 mm × 9 mm, type 0-Ⅱc, tub1, p T1a(M), ly0, v0, HM(-), VM(-)]. Two months after ESD, radiation therapy was started for the EC, and an almost complete response was obtained. Nine months after the ESD, a follow-up EGD showed a submucosal tumor-like lesion with ulceration, located immediately under the post-ESD scar, and biopsy specimens showed moderately differentiated SCC. There were no similar lesions suggesting hematogenous or lymphatic metastasis in the stomach.

This paper considers the problem of constructing smoothing spline surfaces recursively each time when a new set of data is *** spline surfaces are constituted by employing normalized uniform B-splines as the basis ***,based on the basic problem of optimal smoothing splines and an idea of recursive least squares method,we develop a recursive design algorithm of optimal smoothing *** addition,by assuming that the data for smoothing is obtained by sampling a surface,we analyze asymptotical and statistical properties of designed smoothing spline surfaces when the number of iterations tends to *** algorithm and analyses are extended to the periodic *** demonstrate the effectiveness and usefulness by numerical examples.

The blast furnace is a highly energy-intensive,highly polluting,and extremely complex reactor in the ironmaking *** sensors are a key technology for predicting molten iron quality indices reﬂecting blast furnace energy consumption and operation stability,and play an important role in saving energy,reducing emissions,improving product quality,and producing economic *** the advancement of the Internet of Things,big data,and artificial intelligence,data-driven soft sensors in blast furnace ironmaking processes have attracted increasing attention from researchers,but there has been no systematic review of the data-driven soft sensors in the blast furnace ironmaking *** review covers the state-of-the-art studies of data-driven soft sensors technologies in the blast furnace ironmaking ***,wefirst conduct a comprehensive overview of various data-driven soft sensor modeling methods(multiscale methods,adaptive methods,deep learning,etc.)used in blast furnace ***,the important applications of data-driven soft sensors in blast furnace ironmaking(silicon content,molten iron temperature,gas utilization rate,etc.)are ***,the potential challenges and future development trends of data-driven soft sensors in blast furnace ironmaking applications are discussed,including digital twin,multi-source data fusion,and carbon peaking and carbon neutrality.

Kinematically Aligned Total Knee Arthroplasty for Valgus Osteoarthritis of More than 10°―Is It Still a “Challenging Surgery”?

Mechanically aligned total knee arthroplasty (TKA) for valgus knee is considered a “challenging surgery.” Recently, the kinematic alignment (KA) method has gained attention. This study aimed to present objective clinical data, such as intraoperative balance assessment and radiographic evaluation of postoperative lower extremity alignment after TKA using the KA method for valgus deformity. Twenty-one TKA knees (mean age, 74 years;2 males, 19 females) with KA for severe valgus deformity (hip-knee-ankle-angle ≥ 10°) performed at our department in the past 3 years were included in this study. Intraoperative gap and balance measurements and postoperative radiographic evaluation were performed. A total arc of range of motion was achieved up to 98% of preoperative values at 3 weeks postoperatively. Intraoperative gap and balance were stable throughout the entire range of motion. In addition, there were no statistically significant differences in either balance or gap values at each flexion angle. KA TKA is a “simple surgery” rather than a “challenging surgery” because additional soft tissue procedures are not required, operative time is short, intraoperative and postoperative balance is very stable, and a good alignment is achieved. This procedure may relieve surgeons of the stress of TKA for valgus deformities.

Adsorption of Cd（II） on Zn-AI LDHs （Layered Double Hydroxides） Intercalated with Chelating Agents EDTA

The hydrotalcite-like compound [Zn2AI（OH）6]NO3-mH20 （shorted as ZnAI-NO3） was intercalated with the chelating agent EDTA （ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid） by anion exchange to uptake cadmium ion from aqueous solutions. The materials synthesized in this work were characterized by chemical analysis, FT-IR （fourier transform infrared spectroscopy）, XRD （X-ray powder diffraction） to confirm their properties. In order to investigate the optimum conditions for Cd（II） adsorption, the amount of Cd（ll） adsorbed by Zn-AI LDHs intercalated with EDTA （ZnAI-EDTA） under different conditions （i.e., adsorbent dosage, temperature and contact time） were determined by ICP-AES （inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry）. Adsorption isotherms of Cd（II） onto ZnA1-EDTA were measured at varying initial Cd concentrations （0.05 mg/L to 1 mg/L） under optimized conditions. The data were applied to Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms model, and well fitted by the Freundlich isotherms model. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model was more adequate to describe the kinetic in this case.

The materials synthesized in this work were characterized by chemical analysis, FT-IR （Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy）, SEM （Scanning Electron Microscopy） and XRD （Powder X-ray Diffraction） to confirm their properties. In order to discuss the adsorption capacity of LDHs （Layered Double Hydroxides）, the adsorption experiment was investigated under the optimum condition （10 mg, 25℃ and 100 μg·L-1）. The amount of metallic ions adsorbed by LDHs intercalated with EDTA and precursor LDHs were determined by ICP-AES （Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometry） and AAS （Atomic Absorption Spectrometry）. The intercalation of EDTA leads to improve the adsorption capacity of LDHs. LDHs intercalated with chelating agents have generally high affinity for removing metallic ions, and they can be efficient adsorbents for metallic ions.

In many countries of the world community,a radical rethinking of the social role of women in society is being considered and priority measures are identified to ensure their *** equal participation of women in the political and economic life of the country is considered by the democratic community as necessary conditions for achieving progress in socioeconomic development,in solving political,socio-cultural,racial,ethnic and other *** the formal equality of women with men,the social inequality of women in Japan continues to persist at all levels of the social ***,there is still discrimination against Japanese women in both political and public life,despite the equality of the *** paper uses the Leaky Pipeline theory to clarify the gender role consciousness of underrepresentation of women in political positions including the Diet of Japan,and the role behaviour of women in that *** gender discrimination is not a problem unique to *** developed countries have experienced the same and are still working on a variety of *** accordance with the statements above,this paper analyses the current situation in Japan and considers other countries’ experiences where women have advanced into the society and gender equality is *** this is a proposal of a solution to create an environment where women can play more active roles in Japanese society and government in the future.

Removal of Chromium from Aqueous Solution Using Hybrid Membrane of Chitosan and Silicon Dioxide

Adsorption experiment from aqueous solutions containing known amount of chromium （Cr） using hybrid membrane of chitosan and silicon dioxide was explored to evaluate the efficiency of the membrane as sorbent for Cr（VI）. Some variable parameters such as pH, contact time and the dosage of the membrane were optimized. Adsorption isotherms of Cr（VI） onto the hybrid membrane were measured with varying initial concentrations under optimized condition. Furthermore, the sorption mechanism of Cr by the membrane was investigated by applying Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm equations to the data obtained. The surface morphology of the membrane was determined by SEM （scanning electron microscope） for material characterization. The concentrations of Cr in solution are determined by ICP-MS （inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry）. Hybrid membrane of chitosan and silicon dioxide can be an efficient sorbent for Cr（VI）.
