Patients ≥ 75 years with acute coronary syndrome but without critical epicardial coronary disease： prevalence, characteristics, and outcome

Objective Absence of significant epicardial coronary artery disease （CAD） in patients with acute onset of chest pain and elevation of myocardial necrosis markers is occasionally observed. The aim of this study was to analyse the clinical characteristics and outcome of such patients with advanced age. Methods We retrospectively analysed 4,311 patients with acute onset of chest pain plus necrosis marker elevation. Two hundred and seventy two patients without CAD on angiogram （6.3%） were identified. Out of them, 50 （1.2%） patients 〉 75 years （Group Ⅰ） were compared with （1） 222 acute coronary syndrome （ACS） patients without CAD on angiogram 〈 75 years （Group Ⅱ）, and （2） 610 consecutive patients ≥ 75 years with Non-ST-elevation Myocardial Infarction （NSTEMI） undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention （Group Ⅲ）. Results Group 1 compared to Group III patients made up for more females （64.0% vs. 49.2%; P 〈 0.0001）, and had more severe anginal symptoms on presentation [Canadian Cardiovascular Society （CCS） class Ⅰ/Ⅱ, 26.0% vs. 49.8%; P = 0.02]. Group I patients also had lower troponin levels （0.62 ± 0.8 ng/mL vs. 27 ± 74 ng/mL; P 〈 0.02）, lower leukocyte count （9.4 ± 3.13 × 10^9 vs. 12 ± 5.1 × 10^9; P = 0.001 ） and better preserved left ventricular function （56.7% ± 14.3 % vs. 45% ± 1 1%; P 〈 0.0001 ）. Event-free survival （cardiac death, myocardial infarction, recurrent angina, and re-hospitalisation） was more frequent in Group Ⅰ and Ⅱ patients compared to Group III patients （64.9%, 66.7%, and 41.6%, respectively; P 〈 0.0001）. Conclusions ACS in patients 〉 75 years without CAD is very infrequent, associated with a （1） similar outcome compared to ACS patients 〈 75 years without CAD, and （2） significant better outcome compared to NSTEMI patients 〉 75 years.

Utilization of Cement Kiln Dust (CKD) with Silica Fume (SF) as a Partial Replacement of Cement in Concrete Production

This research aimed to clarify the role of by-product materials, such as CKD with SF as partial replacement by weight of cement in concrete manufacturing and inclusion on different characteristics of concrete. Concrete test specimens were mixed with 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25% (CKD) with 15% (SF) as partial replacement by weight of Cement (CEM I-52.5N). Fresh concrete properties have been evaluated by workability measurement slump test. While hardened concrete properties have been evaluated by compressive, split tensile and flexural strengths tests at ages 7, 28 and 56 days, but evaluated for bond strength, modulus of elasticity and chemical composition measurement with X-Ray Fluorescence at age of 28 days. The test results have revealed that the increase of CKD amount with fixed amount of SF in concrete mixtures as partial replacement by weight of cement leads to gradual decrease of fresh concrete workability. In concrete mixtures, 20% CKD in the presence of 15% SF as partial replacement by the weight of cement are the optimum ratios which can be used without any negative effect on mechanical properties compressive, indirect tensile, flexural and bond strength at all the ages of concrete. Also modulus of elasticity and bond strength increased by 8.81% and 0.69% respectively at the age 28 days compared with control mixture.

Objective We evaluate the effects of Thymus algeriensis （TEO） against hydrogen peroxide （H202） toxicity on body and testis weight, testis sperm count, testis lipid peroxidation, and antioxidant enzyme activities in rats. Methods Rats were treated with low （LD） and high dose （HD） of H202 （0.1 and 1 mmol/L） in the presence or absence of TEO （150 mg/kg）. Results The results exhibited a significant decrease in body weight and testis weight, in total sperm number decrease （P〈0.05）, sperm motility and percentage of sperm viability, leading to complete arrest, in sperm flagellar beat frequency by the gavage of 1 mmol/L H202 compared to controls. The administration of H2O2 resulted in a significant reduction in testis GSH, GPx, CAT, SOD, and GST activity and significant increase （P〈0.05） in MDA concentration compared with the untreated control animals. TEO pre-treatment protected testis from the H2O2 generated oxidative stress. These results were confirmed by histological architecture examinations. Conclusion H2O2 has the ability to alter the sperm function, characteristics and development of testis. However, TEO is an efficient natural agent, which can prevent the testis from H2O2-induced oxidative damage in rats.

A Configurable Routing Protocol for Improving Lifetime and Coverage Area in Wireless Sensor Networks

The particularities of Wireless Sensor Networks require specially designed protocols. Nodes in these networks often possess limited access to energy (usually supplied by batteries), which imposes energy constraints. Additionally, WSNs are commonly deployed in monitoring applications, which may intend to cover large areas. Several techniques have been proposed to improve energy-balance, coverage area or both at the same time. In this paper, an alternative solution is presented. It consists of three main components: Fuzzy C-Means for network clustering, a cluster head rotation mechanism and a sleep scheduling algorithm based on a modified version of Particle Swarm Optimization. Results show that this solution is able to provide a configurable routing protocol that offers reduced energy consumption, while keeping highcoverage area.

A Computational Comparison between Optimization Techniques for Wells Placement Problem: Mathematical Formulations, Genetic Algorithms and Very Fast Simulated Annealing

This study considers several computational techniques for solving one formulation of the wells placement problem (WPP). Usually the wells placement problem is tackled through the combined efforts of many teams using conventional approaches, which include gathering seismic data, conducting real-time surveys, and performing production interpretations in order to define the sweet spots. This work considers one formulation of the wells placement problem in heterogeneous reservoirs with constraints on inter-well spacing. The performance of three different types of algorithms for optimizing the well placement problem is compared. These three techniques are: genetic algorithm, simulated annealing, and mixed integer programming (IP). Example case studies show that integer programming is the best approach in terms of reaching the global optimum. However, in many cases, the other approaches can often reach a close to optimal solution with much more computational efficiency.

Effect of Albendazole and Mebendazole on Hydatid Cyst of Mice

In the current study, hydatid cysts from livers and lungs of camels were obtained from Tambool slaughter house and protoscoleces were separated aseptically. 36-weeks-old Swiss mice (25 - 30 gram body weight males and females) were divided into two groups of 6 each: a prophylactic group dosed with 150 ml/kg of albendazole and mebendazole was given directly after injection with 2000 protoscoleces intraperitoneally for 10 consecutive days. The treated group was given a dose of 300 ml/kg of albendazole and mebendazole for 24 days with 4 days interval separated by 2 days and after 6 months of inoculation with protoscoleces, the two groups in addition to the control group were sacrificed and necropsied. The results revealed a significant difference in the development of hydatid cyst (p < 0.01). Inside the mice, small number of cysts was noticed in the group treated with albendazole and mebendazole compared to the control group, however, albendazole was highly efficacious than the mebendazole where the efficiency of albendazole reached 97% while the mebendazole efficiency rate was almost 50% which indicates that albendazole could be considered the drug of choice in the treatment of hydatid cyst.

Investigation of the Phytochemicals, Antioxidant, and Antimicrobial Activity of the <i>Andrographis paniculata</i>Leaf and Stem Extracts

Andrographis paniculata (Kalmegh) has been considered as a medicinal shrub and used as a medicinal plant in the remote areas of Bangladesh. A. paniculata leaf and stem extracts were prepared using the polar (i.e., water, and 70% ethanol) and nonpolar (i.e., hexane) solvents. The phytochemical contents, total phenol contents (TPC), antioxidant activity, and antibacterial activity of all the extracts of A. paniculata leaf and stem were investigated. Both the gram-positive (i.e., Bacillus subtillis) and gram-negative (i.e., E. coli, and Salmonella typhi) strains of bacteria were used for the antibacterial activity assay of the sample extracts. The ethanolic stem extracts contained the maximum amount of TPC when compared to that of the leaf extracts. However, the aqueous stem extracts had the highest free radical scavenging activity in vitro. The extracts prepared from A. paniculata stem showed better antibacterial activity against all the strains of bacteria (i.e., E. coli, S. typhi, and B. subtillis) when compared to that of the leaf extracts. More specifically, the aqueous stem extract showed superior antibacterial effect against E. coli, and B. subtillis, and the zones of inhibition were 21 mm, and 29 mm in diameter, respectively. On the other hand, the ethanolic stem extract showed the maximum antibacterial activity against S. typhi and the zone of inhibition was 8.15 mm. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) value and IC50 value for all the A. paniculata extracts were ~0.05 μg/μL, and ~1 μg/μL, respectively.

Behavior of Repairing Composite I-Section Beams with Opening under Ultimate Torque

An experimental study was conducted to investigate the behavior of composite concrete beams damaged and cracked under pure torsion, and then repaired by external strengthening. This was achieved using high strength Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) laminates bonded with epoxy four composite modify reactive powder concrete (MRPC) I-beams. Different types of section (Solid & with opening) were tested to obtain the effect of amount of CFRP laminate on beams ultimate torque behavior, angle of twist and failure modes. The results obtained showed that a significant effect of external high strength CFRP laminates on effectively restore of section solid, the range of 89.8% to 91.2% of ultimate torsional strength effectively restored as well as effectively restoring of section opening by 83.48% - 86.67% of ultimate torsional strength. The repaired beams give high efficiency in ultimate torsional strength, and indicate that the adopted technique gives a good torsional strength.

Effects of Site Burning on Multiple Leader Formation and Growth Performance of Selected <i>Acacia</i>Genotypes

Loss of apical dominance, resulting in seedlings with more than one leader, generally referred to as multiple leaders (ML), has been a major problem in forest tree plantation in the tropics. A study to examine the effects of site preparation by burning on growth performance and multiple leaders (ML) formation, and its variation in eight-genotypes of Acacia mangium and Acacia auriculiformis was conducted. The design used for this field trial is a randomized complete block design with four replications at two sites (burnt and unburned) and eight genotypes (four from each species), and the effects were monitored for 24 months. There were significant differences at P A. mangium provenances were more responsive to burning than A. auriculiformis, whereas at the unburned site, the variation between them was not significant. Based on the above variation, it can be concluded that burning causes ML formation and can affect the growth of these selected Acacia genotypes.
