Development of synthetic bone substitutes has arisen as a major research interest in the need to find an alternative to autologous bone *** an ovine model,the present pre-clinical study presents a synthetic bone graft(BonelikeVR)in combination with a cellular system as an alternative for the regeneration of non-critical *** association of biomaterials and cell-based therapies is a promising strategy for bone tissue *** stem cells(MSCs)from human dental pulp have demonstrated both in vitro and in vivo to interact with diverse biomaterial systems and promote mineral deposition,aiming at the reconstruction of osseous ***,these cells can be found and isolated from many ***-critical bone defects were treated with BonelikeVR with or without MSCs obtained from the human dental *** showed that BonelikeVR and MSCs treated defects showed improved bone regeneration compared with the defects treated with BonelikeVR ***,it was observed that the biomaterial matrix was reabsorbed and gradually replaced by new bone during the healing *** therefore propose this combination as an efficient binomial strategy that promotes bone growth and vascularization in non-critical bone defects.

Heart failure(HF)in the elderly,besides being a leading cause of mortality and morbidity,is rapidly increasing in prevalence with patients aged 65 and older accounting for more than 75%of heart failure *** patients have historically been unrepresented in clinical HF trials and often present with multiple comorbidities,including frailty,depression,nutritional,functional and cognitive ***,pharmacologic challenges such as adherence to therapy,polypharmacy,altered drug pharmacokinetics and/or renal derangements make them less likely to receive guideline-directed medical therapies for *** of these various interrelated domains is key and should prompt a multidisciplinary,holistic management approach so as to optimize prognosis in this vulnerable subset of the population.

Automatic detection and evaluation of sugarcane planting rows in aerial images

Sugarcane planting is an important and growing activity in ***,several techniques have been developed over the years to maximize crop productivity and profit,amongst them,processing of sugarcane field *** this sense,this research aims to identify and analyze crop rows and measure their gaps from aerial images of sugarcane *** this,a small Remotely Piloted Aircraft captured the images,generating orthomosaics of the areas for ***,each orthomosaic is classified with the K-Nearest Neighbor algorithm to segment regions of *** row orientation is estimated using the RGB gradient *** operations and computational geometry models are then used to detect and map rows and gaps along the planting row *** evaluate the results,crop rows are mapped and compared to manually taken *** technique obtained an error smaller than 2%when compared to gap length in crop rows from an orthomosaic with the area of 8.05 ha(ha).The proposed approach can map the positioning of the automatically generated row segments appropriately onto manually created ***,our method also achieved similar results when confronted with a manual technique for differing growth stages(40 and 80 days after harvest)of the sugarcane *** proposed method presents a great potential to be adopted in sugarcane planting monitoring。

Predicting the dynamics of a native Araucaria forest using a distance- independent individual tree-growth model

Background： In recent decades, native Araucaria forests in Brazil have become fragmented due to the conversion of forest to agricultural lands and commercial tree plantations. Consequently, the forest dynamics in this forest type have been poorly investigated, as most fragments are poorly structured in terms of tree size and diversity. Methods; We developed a distance-independent individual tree-growth model to simulate the forest dynamics in a native Araucaria forest located predominantly in southern Brazil. The data were derived from 25 contiguous plots （1 ha） established in a protected area left undisturbed for the past 70 years. The plots were measured at 3-year intervals from their establishment in 2002. All trees above a l O-cm diameter at breast height were tagged, identified as to species, and measured. Because this forest type comprises hundreds of tree species, we clustered them into six ecological groups： understory, subcanopy, upper canopy shade-tolerant, upper canopy light-demanding, pioneer, and emergent. The diameter increment, survival, and recruitment sub-models were fitted for each species group, and parameters were implemented in a simulation software to project the forest dynamics. The growth model was validated using independent data collected from another research area of the same forest type. To simulate the forest dynamics, we projected the species group and stand basal areas for 50 years under three different stand-density conditions： low, average, and high. Results： Emergent species tended to grow in basal area, irrespective of the forest density conditions. Conversely, shade-tolerant species tended to decline over the years. Under low-density conditions, the model showed a growth tendency for the stand basal area, while under average-density conditions, forest growth tended to stabilize within 30 years. Developing and validating a nestling photographic aging guide for cavity-nesting birds: an example with the European Bee-eater(Merops apiaster)

Background: Accurate estimation of nestlings’ age is essential in avian demography studies as well as in population ecology and conservation. For example, it can be useful for synchronizing nest visits with events of particular interest, such as the age at which young can be safely ringed, or in choosing the best period to attain the most accurate calculation of laying or hatching ***: We constructed a photographic guide for aging European Bee-eaters(Merops apiaster) nestlings to 3-day age classes and evaluated the aging method by performing a validation exercise with several observers with no previous experience in aging bee-eater ***: The aging guide for bee-eater nestlings allowed estimating age to within 3 days with an average accuracy of 0.85. We found the optimal period for aging nestlings was between days 13-18(with accuracy between 0.94 and 0.99), during which the status of feather development was more easily distinguishable from the preceding and subsequent age classes. During the first 3 days after hatching, nestlings could also be aged with high accuracy(0.93). The small size of the nestling in relation to the eggs and the nestling’s inability to raise its head during these first days allowed for good discrimination from the subsequent age class. Between days 25 and 28, nestlings were correctly aged in only half of assignments(0.55 sensitivity) and nestlings belonging to class 7(days 7-9) were the least correctly identified(0.38 sensitivity). However, by visiting the nests at 12 days intervals it is possible to achieve the highest accuracy in age estimation with the smallest disturbance and logistic ***: This study highlighted how indirect methods and a simple protocol can be established and employed to quickly estimate nestling age in cases where handling nestlings is challenging or impossible, while minimizing disturbance in and around the nest.

Machines that mimic humans have inspired scientists for *** soft robotic hands are a good example of such an endeavor,featuring intrinsic material compliance and continuous motion to deal with uncertainty and adapt to unstructured *** research led to impactful achievements in functional designs,modeling,fabrication,and control of soft ***,the full realization of life-like movements is still challenging to achieve,often based on trial-and-error considerations from design to fabrication,consuming time and *** this study,a soft robotic hand is proposed,composed of soft actuator cores and an exoskeleton,featuring a multimaterial design aided by finite element analysis(FEA)to define the hand geometry and promote finger’s *** actuators are fabricated using molding,and the exoskeleton is 3D-printed in a single *** ON-OFF controller keeps the set fingers’inner pressures related to specific bending angles,even in the presence of *** FEA numerical results were validated by experimental tests,as well as the ability of the hand to grasp objects with different shapes,weights,and *** integrated solution will make soft robotic hands more available to people,at a reduced cost,avoiding the time-consuming design-fabrication trial-and-error processes.

Objective:To investigate malaria prevalence and socio-economic conditions in East Timor. Methods:Blood samples were collected from 650 individuals distributed among six districts in East Timor.434 and 216 individuals were sampled by passive and active case detection, respectively(PCD,ACD).Results:The results showed that the plasmodium infection prevalence was 18.9%with predominance of Plasmodium falciparum(***) infections(60.2%). The majority of cases were detected in children between 2-14 years old in both PCD and ACD. Participants residing in Same and Lospalos were at a higher risk of *** percentage of infections associated to the lack of bed net use was twice as high as users(25.2%vs 12.5%). The prevalence of malaria among participants who lived in brick/cement houses(8.3%) was two times less than those who lived in other types of houses(3.7%).There was a significantly lower prevalence of infection detected in individuals living in complete housing constructions with absence of domestic animals in or near the ***:The major risk factors for malaria in East Timor are age,lack of bed net use,incomplete housing constructions and exposure to mosquitoes.

Fecal marker levels as predictors of need for endoscopic balloon dilation in Crohn's disease patients with anastomotic strictures

AIM To evaluate the accuracy and best cut-off value of fecal calprotectin(FC) and fecal lactoferrin(FL) to predict disease recurrence in asymptomatic patients presenting with anastomotic strictures. METHODS This was a longitudinal single tertiary center study based on prospectively collected data(recorded in a clinical database created for this purpose) performed between March 2010 and November 2014. Crohn's disease(CD) patients with anastomotic stricture who submitted to postoperative endoscopic evaluation were included. Stools were collected on the day before bowel cleaning for FC and FL. Endoscopic balloon dilation(EBD) was performed if the patient presented an anastomotic stricture not traversed by the colonoscope, regardless of patients' symptoms. Successful dilation was defined as passage of the colonoscope through the dilated stricture into the neotermimal *** recurrence was defined as a modified Rutgeerts score of ≥ i2 b. RESULTS In a total of 178 patients who underwent colonoscopy, 58 presented an anastomotic stricture, 86% were asymptomatic, and 48(54% male; median age of 46.5 years) were successfully dilated. Immediate success rate was 92% and no complications were recorded. FC and FL levels correlated significantly with endoscopic recurrence(P < 0.001) with an optimal cut-off value of 90.85 μg/g(sensitivity of 95.5%, specificity of 69.2%, positive predictive value(PPV) of 72.4%, negative predictive value(NPV) of 94.7% and accuracy of 81%] for FC and of 5.6 μg/g(sensitivity of 77.3%, specificity of 69.2%, PPV of 68%, NPV of 78.4% and accuracy of 72.9%) for *** Fecal markers are good predictors of CD endoscopic recurrence in patients with asymptomatic anastomotic stricture. FC and FL may guide the need for EBD in this context.

Heat and Water Vapour Transfer Trough the Envelope of a Cold Chamber

The diffusion of water vapour in the atmospheric air through the elements of the envelope of a cold storage room, caused by the pressure gradient between the external and internal environment is inevitable in most situations. In fact, if the conditions in the interior of an envelope element are such as to enable the vapour freezing of the migrant water, the increase in volume from the formation of ice will causes the deformation of this element with very serious consequences, which can go up to its partial or total destruction. In this scenario, readily note the importance ofvapour barriers associated with a properly designed insulation, tend to not only reduce the amount of water diffused, but also prevent the achievement of the conditions for freeze inside the engaging elements. The purpose of this work is to formulate the procedure for design of vapour barriers connected with the design of optimized thermal insulation, and then apply it to a cold chamber located in Portugal. Vapour barriers and the procedure for its design are both mandatory. The required thickness of the vapour barrier is relatively small, and the most appropriate insolation （maintaining the optimal thickness） is the black cork agglomerate.
