AIM: To assess whether DNA methylation patterns in chronic alcoholics are different from non-alcoholic sibling controls. METHODS: We examined the methylation patterns in DNA samples from 25 chronic alcoholics and 22 matched siblings as controls (one per family). DNA was extracted from peripheral blood and analyzed for differences in the methylation patterns after bisulfite-conversion. We used the Illumina GoldenGate Methylation Cancer Panel I (Illumina, San Diego, CA), which probes the methylation profile at 1505 CpG sites from 807 cancer related genes. We excluded the 84 X-chromosome CpG sites and 134 autosomal CpG sites that failed to show a within sample reliability score of at least 95% for all samples, leaving 1287 autosomal CpG sites (associated with 743 autosomal genes) with reliable signals for all samples. A methylation score was calculated as the average methylation for the 1287 CpG sites examined. Differences were assessed by a two-sample t-test. We also examined the average sib pair differences in methylation scores at each of the 1287 sites. All analyses were performed using SPSS, version 9.0, P 5%. Subgroup analysis showed that methylation scores were significantly lower for the alcoholic-dependent subjects who smoked compared to their non-smoking unaffected siblings. Specifically, among smokers who are alcoholic, global methylation indices were significantly lower than in non-alcoholic sib controls, whereas among non-smoking alcoholics, the global indices were significantly higher (P = 0.008). Al-4. 5Cu-5Pb alloy was prepared by sand and chill casting. The same alloy was also spray deposited at a gas pressure of 1.6 MPa. The microstructural features exhibit a coarse to fine dendritic morphology for sand and chill cast alloys. Equiaxed grains were observed for spray formed alloys. Wear testing employing a pin-on-disc type set-up, reveals considerably lower wear of spray deposited alloy compared to that of chill and sand cast alloys. The morphological features of wear track on specimen and debris indicated a mixed oxidative-cum-adhesive wear mechanisms for these alloys tested in the present investigation. The present study was conducted to find the changes in germination, biomass and physiological characteristics of Oryza sativa exposed to different concentrations of salt solution. 50 and 100 mM salt solution significantly decreased seed germination, seedling length, vigour index and biomass of Oryza sativa in comparison to control. A significant reduction in chlorophyll and protein contents was also observed in seedlings of Oryza sativa with 100 mM NaCl concentration at 72 h. The degree of toxicity was proportional to the NaCl concentration and exposure period. Higher concentration of NaCl （100 mM） exhibited 81.75% and 79.78% reduction in chlorophyll and protein contents in the leaves of Oryza sativa at 72 h.

Chronic hepatitis caused by hepatitis B virus(HBV) is an endemic disease in India. It is associated with extrahepatic manifestations like polyarteritis nodosa(PAN) which is a vasculitis like disorder, presenting in subacute or chronic phase; involving visceral and systemic vessels. It should always be considered as a possible etiology of hypertension in an underlying setting of hepatitis B. We describe a 56-year-male patient with a history of chronic HBV who presented to the outpatient clinic with history of recent onset hypertension and suspected liver disease. Further work up for the cause of recent hypertension included a contrast computerized tomography of abdomen, which revealed concomitant pathologies of chronic liver disease and multiple aneurysms in bilateral kidneys. This case illustrates the unusual presentation of extrahepatic manifestation of viral hepatitis in the form of PAN of kidneys. PAN as an independent entity may be missed in specialized clinics evaluating liver pathologies, due to its insidious onset, atypical clinical symptoms and multi-systemic manifestations. The knowledge of extrahepatic, renal and vascular manifestations of hepatitis B unrelated to liver disease should be considered by physicians at the time of diagnosis and management of patients with HBV.

Breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer in women,and it was hard to prevent or diagnose at an early ***,it is imperative to develop advanced therapeutics for effective ***,a targeted daunorubicin(DNR)and cytarabine(ara-C)co-delivery system was developed by modifying the ara-C loaded liposomes(LIP-ara-C)with the hyaluronic acid-DNR(HA-DNR)*** co-assembled hybrid nanoparticles(HA-DNR/LIP-ara-C HNPs)exhibited good serum and storage stability with an average diameter of approximately 100 *** specifically binding to the CD44 receptors that overexpressed on cancer cells,these HNPs could be uptake via endocytosis and accumulate intracellularly,in which an optimized DNR and ara-C combination at a molar ratio of 1:5 could generate enhanced synergistic effects with reduced dose-related toxicity on cancer cells.

AIM: To assess the role of contrast enhanced ultrasonography in evaluation of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) at the first Indian tertiary liver center. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of contrast enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) examinations over 24 mo for diagnosis, surveillance, characterization and follow up of 50 patients in the context of HCC was performed. The source and indication of referrals, change in referral rate, accuracy and usefulness of CEUS in a tertiary liver center equipped with a 64 slice dual energy computer tomography (CT) and 3 tesla magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were studied. Sonovue (BR1, Bracco, Italy, a second generation contrast agent) was used for contrast US studies. Contrast enhanced CT/MRI or both were performed in all patients. The findings were taken as a baseline reference and correlation was done with respect to contrast US. Contrast enhanced MRI was performed using hepatocyte specific gadobenate dimeglumine (Gd-BOPTA). Iomeron (400 mg; w/v) was used for dynamic CT examinations. RESULTS: About 20 (40%) of the examinations were referred from clinicians for characterization of a mass from previous imaging. About 15 (30%) were performed for surveillance in chronic liver disease; 5 (10%) examinations were performed for monitoring lesions after radiofrequency ablation (RFA); 3 (6%) were post trans-arterial chemoembolization (TACE) assessments and 3 (6%) were patients with h/o iodinated contrast allergy. About 2(4%) were performed on hemodynamically unstable patients in the intensive care with raised alpha fetoprotein and 2(4%) patients were claustrophobic. The number of patients referred from clinicians steadily increased from 12 in the first 12 mo of the study to 38 in the last 12 mo. CEUS was able to diagnose 88% of positive cases of HCC as per reference standards. In the surveillance group, specificity was 53.3% vs 100% by CT/MRI.
