Aims Grasslands are widely used for production of livestock,which depend on the nutritive value of herbage ***,there are still large uncertainties as to how grazing,precipitation and growing season interactively affect herbage nutritive *** Here,based on a grazing experiment with seven grazing intensities in an Inner Mongolian grassland since the year 2005,we analysed nutritive value of four dominant grass species from June to September in both a relatively wetter year(2008)and a drier year(2010).Herbage with high nutritive value is characterized by high concentration of crude protein,high concentration of cellulase digestible organic matter and low concentration of neutral detergent *** Findings We found that(i)grazing significantly increased the nutritive value of Leymus chinensis,Agropyron michnoi and Cleistogenes squarrosa but had minor effects on the nutritive value of Stipa grandis.(ii)For all species,nutritive values were greater in the wetter year than in the drier year and were greatest in the early growing season(June)and lowest at the end of the growing season(September).Inter-annual and inter-seasonal variations in nutritive value were much greater for *** and *** than for *** and ***,suggesting higher water use efficiency for the latter two species.(iii)Grazing significantly decreased the drought resistance of three species,but not of ***.(iv)Grazing significantly increased inter-month variation in nutritive value for *** and *** but had relatively minor or no effects on that of *** and ***,grazing effects on species nutritive values showed strong inter-annual and seasonal patterns,and species-specific responses might be related to species traits(*** use efficiency,digestibility).Our results have important implications for ecosystem management of arid and semiarid grasslands under intense grazing and global climatic change.

Risk factors and outcomes of delayed graft function in renal transplant recipients receiving a steroid sparing immunosuppression protocol

AIM To analyse the risk factors and outcomes of delayed graft function(DGF) in patients receiving a steroid sparing protocol. METHODS Four hundred and twenty-seven recipients of deceased donor kidney transplants were studied of which 135(31.6%) experienced DGF. All patients received monoclonal antibody induction with a tacrolimus based, steroid sparing immunosuppression *** Five year patient survival was 87.2% and 94.9% in the DGF and primary graft function(PGF) group respectively, P = 0.047. Allograft survival was 77.9% and 90.2% in the DGF and PGF group respectively, P < 0.001. Overall rejection free survival was no different between the DGF and PGF groups with a 1 and 5 year rejection free survival in the DGF group of 77.7% and 67.8% compared with 81.3% and 75.3% in the PGF group, P = 0.19. Patients with DGF who received IL2 receptor antibody induction were at significantly higher risk of rejection in the early post-transplant period than the group with DGF who received alemtuzumab induction. On multivariate analysis, risk factors for DGF were male recipients, recipients of black ethnicity, circulatory death donation, preformed DSA, increasing cold ischaemic time, older donor age and dialysis *** Alemtuzumab induction may be of benefit in preventing early rejection episodes associated with DGF. Prospective trials are required to determine optimal immunotherapy protocols for patients at high risk of DGF.

The catalytic activity of two common bacterial enzymes, lactate dehydrogenase （LDH） and cytochrome c oxidase （COX） from Escherichia coli was examined following bacterial exposure to microwave （MW） radiation under well-defined experimental conditions. The experiments were conducted in a specialized microwave processing apparatus, with an exposure frequency of 18 GHz, and a temperature profile that was restricted to below 40℃ to avoid thermal degradation of the bacteria. The absorbed power was calculated to be 1,500 kW/m3 and the electric field was determined to be 300 Wm. Both values were theoretically confirmed using Computer Simulation Technology （CST） Microwave Studio 3D Electromagnetic Stimulation Software. Results showed that the activity of both enzymes was increased following MW radiation compared to negative controls and thermally treated samples subjected to similar temperature profiles. It is suggested that the increase in COX and LDH enzyme activity could not be explained by conventional heating alone, but was rather a result of micro-thermal effects that incorporated ＇undetectable＇ thermal mechanisms.
