Floristic composition of the halophilic and salt-resistant plant population in Hammam-Boughrara (Oran-Algeria)

This phyto-ecological study is on halophilic and salt-resistant vegetation of Oran region. The semiarid and sometimes arid climate has been defined and confirmed from a bioclimatic point of view. The pedological approach used shows a soil with sandy to silty-sandy texture, favoring regression of the vegetation and a halophilic vegetation set up. In this study, we analyze the floristic composition of the northern region of Hammam Boughrara using multiple floristic surveys conducted at three stations along the Tafna wadi. Dominated by Mediterranean and Saharo-Sindian elements, the relatively poor flora (88 species in total) is biologically characterized by a clear dominance of therophytes (>33%) and chamaephytes (>19%) to the detriment of phanerophytes.

Efficacy Analysis of an Experience on Development of the Combination Therapy Protocol for Endometriosis Management

Purpose: Endometriosis can be managed effectively by medication, surgery, or a combination of both. Numerous studies have been conducted on surgical and medication treatment options, but their results are still under discussion. Therefore, we performed a study to develop a combinational treatment for various stages of endometriosis. Methods: Over a 3-year period, 218 documented endometriosis patients were classified in 4 stages. After first laparoscopy (with electrocoagulation and adhesion removal for stages I to III), the patients were treated with GnRH analogs (Gonadotropin Releasing Hormone Agonist-375 mg of Decapeptyl) for 3, 6 & 6 months, respectively. The second and third laparoscopy procedures were performed after 3 and 6 months, with add-back therapy. The treatment was evaluated by direct observation based on laparoscopic view and the pain relief was measured by the VAS (Visual Analogue Scale) after the first step of medication for patients of stages I-III. Results: After 3 months, 70/76 patients (91.9%) with stage-I endometriosis showed complete recovery (six cases after 6 months) while 65/72 and 32/43 cases with stage-II and -III (90.3 and 74.4%), respectively, showed complete recovery after 6 months of treatment. The remaining patients had GnRH treatment for another 3 months, and all showed a complete recovery after 9 months. Furthermore, 12 of the patients with stage-IV symptoms were candidates for laparoscopy or laparotomy, and their treatment response rate was 55.6%. The pain relief was significant after the combinational treatment in patients with stages I-III (P = 0.0001). Conclusion: Our study showed efficacy of the developed protocol for the endometriosis management.

A New Approach Based on Set Partitioning in Hierarchical Tree Algorithm for Image Compression

In this paper, the authors propose a new approach to image compression based on the principle of Set Partitioning in Hierarchical Tree algorithm （SPIHT）. Our approach, the modified SPIHT （MSPIHT）, distributes entropy differently than SPIHT and also optimizes the coding. This approach can produce results that are a significant improvement on the Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio （PSNR） and compression ratio obtained by SPIHT algorithm, without affecting the computing time. These results are also comparable with those obtained using the Embedded Zerotree Wavelet （EZW） and Joint Photographic Experts Group 2000 （JPG2） algorithms.

Abandoned Quarries in the Akreuch Area (Western Morocco): Inventory of Flora for a Rehabilitation Strategy

Quarrying is an activity contributing to the vitality of the Moroccan economy. However, most of these quarries were abandoned at the end of extraction and became dump and later a place of uncontrolled landfills. The number of restored or rehabilitated quarries is limited and this threatens several aspects of the environment, especially, the quality of surface and ground water, landscape, forests, etc. This also gives rise to increased erosion risk. The study identifies plant species covering 10 abandoned quarries in the region of Rabat, especially the Bouregreg River and its affluent Akreuch in order to define a strategy for their restoration or rehabilitation. Field surveys were led to locate and map 10 abandoned quarries and to sample plant species. Herbaria were established and species were identified and classified. The results of the study distinguished 46 different plant species spread over 45 genera and 27 botanical families. The most dominant family in the quarries visited is Asteraceae. These results will allow us to study the vegetation dynamics in these abandoned lands and serve as a basis, in the selection of appropriate species in eventual restoration or rehabilitation projects.

The Prognostic Value of Vitamin D Insufficiency &Vitamin D Receptor Gene Polymorphism in Adult Acute Myeloid Leukemia Patients

Background: Vitamin D regulates many aspects of cellular growth and differentiation in normal and cancer cells. There is growing evidence for both serum vitamin D level and VDR gene polymorphism as prognostic factors in hematologic malignancies. Aim of this work: Evaluation of vitamin D serum level and VDR FOKI polymorphism as prognostic factors in adult AML patients. Patients & Methods: Eighty subjects were included in this study, 50 adult patients with newly diagnosed AML and 30 apparently healthy controls matched for age and sex. Venous blood samples were withdrawn from all subjects for measurement of serum 25(OH) vitamin D using competitive photo chemiluminescence and molecular detection of VDR (FOKI) polymorphism, which was done by RFLP PCR. All patients received the standard induction chemotherapy regimen 3 & 7. Results: The rate of vitamin D insufficiency was significantly higher in AML patients compared to controls (58% vs 16%, p = 0.03). The mutant FOKI genotype (FF & Ff) was found in 52 % of patients compared to 23 % of controls (p = 0.02). Patient with sufficient vitamin D level showed a significantly higher complete response rate compared to those with insufficient level (90% vs 44%, p = 0.02), while none of the other clinical features showed significant relation. Patients with wild type FOKI polymorphism (FF) were more likely to have favorable cytogenetics, while patient with mutant FOKI polymorphism were more likely to have poor cytogenetics (p = 0.03). The CR rate was highest in the wild type FF group (87.5%) followed by the heterozygous Ff group (50%), while none of the patients in the homozygous ff group achieved CR (p = 0.04). Conclusion: VDR FOKI polymorphism and serum vitamin D level showed a significant impact on the treatment outcome of adult AML patients suggesting their potential role as prognostic factors in these patients. Longer follow up will be needed to study the impact on overall and disease free survival.

A new six intraperitoneal injection insulin-mimetic vanadyl(Ⅱ) compounds [(VD3^-1)(VO^+2)(AAn^-1)](where(n=1~6);AA1=isoleucine, AA2=threonine, AA3=proline, AA4=phenylalanine, AA5=lysine and AA6=glutamine) were synthesized by the chemical reactions between vitamin D3(VD3), VOSO4 and amino acids(AAn) with equal molar ratio 1∶1∶1 in neutralized media. The structures of these complexes were elucidated by spectroscopic methods like, infrared and solid reflectance spectroscopes. Magnetic moments and electronic spectra reveal square pyramid geometrical structure of the complexes. The infrared spectra assignments of these complexes revealed that the chelation towards vanadyl(Ⅳ) ions existed via deprotonation of the hydroxyl group of VD3 drug ligand and so amino acids act as bidentate ligand via N-amino and O-carboxylate groups. The anti-diabetic efficiency of these complexes were evaluated against streptozotocin induced diabetic male albino rats.
