An experiment was conducted to assess the effect of leaf litter of Leucaena leucocephala on two forest crops Sada koroi （Albizia procera）, Ipil ipil （L. leucocephala） and three agricultural crops Falen （Vigna unguiculata）, Chickpea （Citer arietinum） and Arhor （Cajanus cajan） in the nursery of the Institute of Forestry and Environmental Sciences, Chittagong University, Bangladesh, in a Randomized Block Design. Results suggested that leaf litters ofL. leucocephala induced inhibitory effects on germination and growth of bioassay. It was also found that the effect depended on concentration of extract and litterfall, type of receptor species. Higher concentration of the materials had the higher effect and vice versa. Growth response of receptor crops varied with the variation of leaf litter application. the study revealed that application of low-dose leaf litter specially litter of 10 g·m^-2 had stimulating effect on shoot growth of C. arietinum, Vunguiculata and A. procera. While in all other cases significant inhibitory effect was observed and it was significantly increased with the increase of leaf litter application. However, the trend of inhibition was uneven with treatments. Root growth was found to be more affected than shoot growth.

Allelopathic effects of different doses of Eucalyptus camaldulensis leaf litters were investigated through an experiment in the green house of Institute of Forestry and Environmental Sciences, Chittagong, Bangladesh. three popular agricultural crops： Falen （Vigna unguiculata）, Chickpea （Cicer arietinum）, Arhor （Cajanus cajan） and two widely used plantation trees： Sada koroi （Albizia procera） and Ipil ipil （Leucaena leucocephala） were selected as bioassay species. Experiment was set on tray at room temperature 27℃. the effects of different doses of leaf litter extracts were compared to the control. Results suggest that leaf litters of E, camaldulesis induced inhibitory effects, It was also found that the effect depend on concentration of extract and litterfall, type of receiver species. Higher concentration of the materials had the higher effect and vice versa. though all the bioassay species were suppressed some of them showed better performance. Vigna unguiculata, Cicer arietinum are recommended in agroforestry based on this present Experiment output. In mixed plantation, Leucaena leucochephala is a better choice while compared to Albizia procera.

Background： Progress of forest production in response to the environment requires a quantitative understanding of leaf area development. therefore, it is necessary to investigate the dynamics of seasonal crown foliage in order to understand the productivity of mangroves, which play an important role in the subtropical and tropical coastlines of the world. method： Crown foliage dynamics of the mangrove Rhizophora styloso were studies to reveal patterns of leaf recruitment, survival and seasonal leaf area growth. Results： Flushing of leaves occurred throughout the year, but both flushing and leaf area growth pattern of leaves varied with season. maximum flushing occurred in summer, but leaf areas did not differ significantly with season. the half-expansion period is longer, and the intrinsic rate of increase was lower in winter. Summer flushed leaves grew faster at their initial stage and reached their maximum area over a shorter period of time. the difference in temperature and air vapor pressure deficit （VPD） between summer and winter contributed to the present dynamics of foliage patterns. the mean leaf longevity was estimated to be 13.1 month. the crown foliage area was almost stable throughout the year. Conclusions： Homeostatic control of the crown foliage area may be accompanied by the existence of ecophysiological mechanisms in R. stylosa. Integrating crown foliage dynamics into forest models represents an important step towards incorporating physiological mechanisms into the models for predicting growth responses to environmental changes and for understanding the complex responses of tree growth and litter production.

Conservation agriculture(CA)based production systems may help in achieving more sustainable intensification of cropping systems that use less labour and energy and have higher profit margins,in addition to soil conservation and environmental impact mitigation *** these objectives can only be achieved when the right mechanization options,including appropriate crop establishment equipment,are in place to assist in timely field *** urgent need exists,therefore,to fine tune and re-adjust the existing two-wheel tractor(2Wt)operated seed drills,with specific reference to the design of blade and furrow openers,while at the same time considering performance in different soil types and *** this end,experiments were conducted during 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 at two BARI Regional Agricultural Research Stations in Jamalpur and Barisal,Bangladesh,on a loam and clay loam soil,respectively,to evaluate five types of furrow opener for strip *** and modified shoe-type furrow openers were tested and compared with three inverted-t furrow openers with rake angles of 75°,65°and 55°.the newly designed inverted-t furrow openers were narrower than the shoe-type openers;they also had a longer,hollow shanks and provided better options for adjustment to achieve the desired seeding depth and line *** to shoe-type openers,better seeding depth,uniformity and higher degree of seed coverage were recorded with use of the inverted-t furrow opener with a 65°rake *** resulted in better seed coverage in the furrow,a higher emergence rate index,and the highest emergence percentage of maize and mung *** research findings can be generalized to smallholder production systems on loam and clay loam soils where farmers utilize 2Wt operated seed drills for crop establishment in both traditional and conservation agriculture-based planting systems.

the natural regeneration of the tree species in pure natural forest stand and enrichment plantations of Baraitali Forest of Chittagong (South) Forest Division, Bangladesh was studied by stratified random quadrat method during April 2002 to November 2002. totally 100 plots of 3 m X 3 m in size represents a total of 64 regenerating tree species from natural forest with an average seedlings of 24767/hm2, while only 40 regenerating tree species were recorded from enrichment plan-tations with an average seedlings of 18633/hm2. maximum regeneration in natural forest was found with Castanopsis spp. (2200 seedlings/hm2) followed by Glochidion lanceolarium (2183 /hm2) whereas, in enrichment plantations maximum regen-eration was found with Dipterocarpus gracilis (2117/hm2) followed by Anogeissus acuminata (2000/hm2). For natural forest, highest relative density was found for Castanopsis spp (8.88%), relative frequency for Glochidion lanceolarium (7.36%), rela-tive abundance for Syzygium spp. (3.79%) and Importance Value Index were recorded with Glochidion lanceolarium (18.24%). the corresponding values for enrichment plantations were highest with Dipterocarpus gracilis (11.36%), Glochidion lanceo-larium (9.71%), Dipterocarpus gracilis (5.92%), Glochidion lanceolarium (23.32%) respectively. Stem per hectare of some common trees with their seedlings and saplings in both the natural stands and enrichment plantations showed that only Dip-terocarpus gracilis successfully recruited in both sites but recruitment was higher in natural forest. Like many other primary rain forests, the Baraitoli forest typically has both substantial seedlings and soil seed bank from which regeneration may occur. the naturally regenerated seedlings are quite dense but it could not reach the pole stage due to human interference.

Herein,the interaction of a protein,bovine serum albumin(BSA),with tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide(ttAB,a cationic surfactant),has been investigated using the conductivity measurement technique in pure water and some sodium salts(NaCl,Na_(2) SO_(4),Na_(2) CO_(3), and Na_(3) PO_(4)) solutions at temperature range of 295.15-320.15 *** reveal that,in the plot of specific conductivity versus the concentration of ttAB,only a single critical micelle concentration(cmc) was found for the ttAB+BSA mixed system in all solvents media *** addition of BSA in aqueous ttAB solution,the value of cmc undergoes a change from its pure form,which indicates the presence of strong interaction operating between the BSA and ttAB *** aqueous system,the cmc values of the ttAB+BSA mixtures are obtained higher compared to the values found for single ttAB surfactant However,the addition of salt decreases the cmc value of mixed ttAB+BSA *** values of cmc of the BSA+ttAB mixed system at 310.15 K and 1.00 mmol·kg^(-1) ionic strength of salt followed the order:cmc_(Na_(2) CO_(3))> Cmcc_(Na_(3) PO_(4))> cmcNaCl>cmC_(Na_(2) SO_(4)).the cmc values of ttAB+BSA mixture were found to be lowered in urea solution within the concentrations *** values of degree of dissociation(α) and fraction of counter ion binding(β) were found to be dependent on additives and *** free energy of micellization(AGm) is negative for all the systems,which manifests that the micellization phenomenon is energetically *** enhancement of the negative value of △G_(m)^(0) in aqueous salt solutions reveals an increase of spontaneity of the ttAB+BSA micellization *** values of △G_(m)^(0) also reveal that the spontaneity of micelle formation is enhanced at higher temperatures in all media *** values of free energy of transfer(△G_(m,t)^(o)) were also determined for numerous solvent media used in the present study and described with appropriate reasoning.

the prevalence of insect pests was studied on rice BRI 1 （mukta） as understory crop grown in association with 11 years old selected tree species viz, Akashmoni. Jhau and Albida in the field laboratory of the Department of Agroforestry, Bangladesh Agricultural University （BAU）. mymensingh during the period from July to December, 2003. Among the three species Albida and Jhau possessed the largest canopy and there light penetration rate were high. On the other hand. Akashmoni had the lowest canopy but it penetrated low amount of light. Albida-rice association showed the lowest infestation of major rice insects followed by Jhau-rice association, while Akashmoni-rice association showed the highest insect infestation. Light intensity in the control plot （absent of tree species） was maximum and it caused minimum severity of insects infestation as compared to other associations. From the result it appeared that light interception has the relationship with insect population in rice. therefore, tree species having sparse canopy which allowed easy penetration of sunlight is suitable for tree-flee agroforestry system.

Estimation and comparison of night-time OH levels in the UK urban atmosphere using two different analysis methods

Night-time OH levels have been determined for UK urban surface environments using two methods, the decay and steady state approximation methods. measurement data from the UK National Environmental technology Centre archive for four urban sites （Bristol, Harwell, London Eltham and Edinburgh） over the time period of 1996 to 2000 have been used in this study. three reactive alkenes, namely isoprene, 1,3-butadiene and trans-2-pentene were chosen for the calculation of OH levels by the decay method. Hourly measurements of NO, NO〉 03, CO and 20 VOCs were used to determine night-time OH level using the steady state approximation method. Our results showed that the night-time OH levels were in the range of 1 × 10^3-1× 10^6 molecules/cm3 at these four urbap sites in the UK. the application of a t-test of these analyses indicated that except Bristol, there was no significant difference between the OH levels found from the decay and steady state approximation methods. Night-time levels of the OH radical appeared to peak in summer and spring time tracking the night-time 03 levels which also passed through a maximum at this time.

Phosphate Desorption Characteristics of Some Representative Soils of Bangladesh: Effect of Exchangeable Anions, Water molecules and Solution to Soil Ratios

Establishment of phosphate (P) retention and release capacity of soils is essential for effective nutrient management and environmental protection. In this experiment, we studied the influence of soil properties on P desorption and the relationship between phosphate sorption and desorption. Among the soil series, the Ghior soil had the highest percent clay (59.32%) and free iron oxide (15241 mg·kg–1) content. Along the catena of the calcareous soils, percent clay contents increased. For sorption study, the soils were equilibrated with 0.01 m CaCl2 solution containing 0, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 25, 50, 100 and 150 mg·P·L–1 solution. For desorption, three extractants namely, SO42- (0.005 m) as Na2SO4, HCO3- (0.01 m) as NaHCO3 and distilled water were used at extractant to soil ratios of 30:1, 60:1 and 100:1 (v/w). Among the sorption equations, the Langmuir equation showed better fit to the sorption data at higher P concentrations. the amount of phosphate desorbed by all the three extractants increased significantly with the increasing extractant to soil ratios. Phosphate desorption by and water molecules was highly correlated with pH, percent clay and free iron oxide content of the soil. Significant positive correlation (r > 0.64, P L). Phosphate desorption by SO42- and water molecules was also positively correlated with Freundlich constant, N (r > 0.67, P 0 (r > 0.72, P –0.77, P L). the results suggest that freshly sorbed phosphate ions (inner-sphere complex forming species) can be readily desobed by outer-sphere complex forming species like sulphate and bicarbonate ions. Water molecules also desorbed significant amount of freshly sorbed phosphate from the soil colloids.
