In the middle-to-late Holocene, Earth’s monsoonal regions experienced catastrophic precipitation decreases that produced green to desert state shifts. Resulting hydrologic regime change negatively impacted water availability and Neolithic cultures. Whereas midHolocene drying is commonly attributed to slow insolation reduction and subsequent nonlinear vegetation–atmosphere feedbacks that produce threshold conditions, evidence of trigger events initiating state switching has remained elusive. Here we document a threshold event ca. 4,200 years ago in the Hunshandake Sandy Lands of Inner Mongolia, northern China, associated with groundwater capture by the Xilamulun River. This process initiated a sudden and irreversible region-wide hydrologic event that exacerbated the desertification of the Hunshandake, resulting in post-Humid Period mass migration of northern China’s Neolithic cultures. The Hunshandake remains arid and is unlikely, even with massive rehabilitation efforts, to revert back to green conditions.

Forest structure of a maple old-growth stand: a case study on the Apennines mountains(Southern Italy)

In Europe, very small forest areas can be considered to be old-growth, and they are mainly located in Eastern Europe. The typical structures of old growth forests infrequently occur in Mediterranean mountainous environments, since they have been affected by human activities for centuries. This study focused on a remote and almost pure Italian maple stand located in southern Italy, which has not been managed for long time due to its inaccessibility. The effects of natural evolution on the forest stand were evaluated through the analysis of the spatial and chronological structure and the regeneration patterns, then estimating the amounts and quality of deadwood occurrence. Across the whole stand, all the trees with DBH （diameter at breast height） larger than 50 cm （LLT, large living trees） were measured （DBH and height） and age was also determined through a dendrochronological approach. The diameters observed ranged between 50 and 145 cm with ages of 12o to ~5o years. The Latham index calculated for trees within the sample plot highlighted a multilayered canopy with a dominant layer of largeliving trees （age 〉 120 years）. The size-class distribution of stems had a reverse-J shape, and basal area was 52 m2 ha-1. Deadwood was exclusively constituted by standing dead trees and CWD and its volume was on average 31 m3 ha-1. Pure Italian maple forests are generally rare in Europe, and it was unexpected to find a forest stand characterized by a so complex structure with old growth attributes. The study of complex forest stand, even if small, could give precious information on the forest evolution, clarifying also diverse auto-ecological traits of tree species that usually are not common in our forests.

This paper reviews our current understanding of Quaternary climate and landscape changes in the desert areas of northern China,a key portion of the middle-latitude drylands on *** earlier studies with our recent research and experience,we offer a comprehensive picture of the state of Chinese deserts during the Quaternary and,in the interest of enhancing future research,identify knowledge gaps and areas of uncertainty. Lacustrine deposits found over an area ranging from China’s western Taklamakan Desert to the eastern Hunshandake Sandy Lands suggest that extensive lakes occurred in China’s deserts during the Pleistocene. Analysis of digital elevation models from SRTM(Shuttle Radar Topography Mission) data supports this interpretation and shows the significant extent of these former *** estimates of mean annual evaporation of ca.1000 mm from lake surfaces and ca.100 mm from land surfaces,confirms that local and regional rainfall is critical for maintenance of desert lakes in this temperate zone,especially during intervals when the mean annual rainfall is more than 100 mm. Rapid shifts between sand seas and lakes in geologically and environmentally diverse settings suggest that the drylands of China are very sensitive ephemeral systems,and not long-lasting as previously *** chronologies suggest that there were large lakes in the western Taklamakan Desert and the Chadamu Basin during MIS(Marine Isotope Stage) 3,at 0 ka,probably related to a period of strong influence of northern hemispheric westerly *** and elevation models revealed by SRTM data and remains of lacustrine sediments also indicate that there was a large lake in the Hunshandake Sandy Lands in the eastern portion of the desert belt during the Quaternary. Characterization of dune morphology has historically been based on relationships between dune forms and wind regimes with dune height shown to be sensitive to atmospheric boundary layer depth,sand availability and sediment *** these parameters have been used in numerical simulations to model the occurrences of some types of dunes,they cannot alone explain the great diversity in form and size seen on Earth and on other solar system *** we present results from our studies of dune formation in the Badain Jaran Desert in western China,where Earth’s tallest dunes *** measured the variability of the dune morphology in this desert on the basis of LANDSAT ETM + data,and we detected the bedrock landforms beneath the aeolian sands by applying gravity *** records from stations at the periphery of the desert and SRTM topographical data were examined also to augment the *** studies demonstrate that in addition to average wind parameters,dune height is highly sensitive to local geology, subsurface characteristics,and topography,and interactions between changing climate conditions and aeolian and fluvial *** additional factors need to be considered in the interpretation and simulation of dunes on *** anticipate that analysis of anomalous dune heights like those seen in the Badain Jaran may also provide critical information on subsurface characteristics and environmental conditions on Earth and on other planetary bodies.

We describe a dataset of 26 modern diatom samples and associated environmental variables from the Badain Jaran Desert,northwest *** influence of electrical conductivity(EC) and other variables on diatom distribution was explored using multivariate analyses and generalized additive modeling of species response curves.A transfer function was derived for EC,the variable with the largest unique effect on diatom variance,as shown by partial canonical correspondence ***-averaging partial least squares regression and calibration provided the best model,with a high coefficient of determination (r = 0.91) and low prediction error(RMSEP = 0.136 logμS cm).To assess its potential for palaeosalinity and palaeoclimate reconstructions,the EC transfer function was applied to fossil diatom assemblages from Pb-dated short sediment cores collected from two subsaline lakes of the Badain Jaran *** diatom-inferred(DI) EC reconstructions were compared with meteorological data for the past 50 years and with remote sensing data for the period AD *** in DI-EC were small and their relationship with climate was ***, remote sensing data indicate that the surface areas and water depths of these lakes did not change,which suggests that water loss by evaporation is compensated by groundwater *** results suggest that the response of these lakes to climate change is mediated by non-climatic factors such as the hydrogeological setting,which control recharge from groundwater,and may be non-linear and non-stationary.
