大宝山矿周边污染土壤重金属生物有效性评估

分析了6种单一提取剂HCl、DTPA、CaCl2、NH4NO3、MgCl2、去离子水对大宝山矿周边上坝村受污染菜地(生菜、芥菜、蕹菜)土壤中Pb、Zn、Cu和Cd生物可利用性的指示能力。结果表明:3种菜地的HCl、DTPA提取态的Pb,CaCl2、NH4NO3和MgCl2提取态的Zn,CaCl2提取态的Cd可以比较好地反映金属的生物有效性;而3种蔬菜中的Cu与土壤6种提取态的Cu均没有显著的相关性。土壤样品中铁锰氧化物对Pb、Zn、Cu和Cd的固定作用直接影响该4种重金属的析出,并且Cu、Cd和Pb所受的影响要强于Zn。结果还表明,与地上部分相比蔬菜地下部分的重金属含量能更准确地反映重金属从土壤向植物中的转移。

采用温室盆栽实验,研究了在不同剂量(质量分数分别为0、0.10%、0.25%、0.5%和1.0%)石灰石改良条件下,大宝山矿强酸性多金属不同污染程度土壤中麻疯树的生长状况和吸收金属特征,并探讨了麻疯树在酸性土壤中生长的抑制因素和石灰石改良适宜剂量.研究表明,在低污染酸性土壤中,Cu和Pb的高活性可能是抑制麻疯树生长的主要因素;而在高污染酸性土壤中,Cd、Cu、Zn等金属的高活性及由强酸引起的Al毒也可能是抑制麻疯树生长的主要因素;石灰石通过提高土壤pH值和降低多金属的生物有效态含量,促进了麻疯树在低污和高污土壤中的生长,其最佳剂量分别为0.25%和0.5%;石灰石可以不同程度地降低麻疯树地上部和地下部的Cd、Cu、Pb、Zn和Al含量,同时随石灰石用量的增加,其金属含量基本呈降低趋势;麻疯树地下部金属含量高于地上部,且石灰石对麻疯树地下部金属(除Cd外)含量降低幅度较地上部大.因此,种植麻疯树与石灰石改良是联合修复大宝山矿酸性多金属污染土壤的有效措施之一.

AIM: To prospectively analyse the clinical, biochemical and radiological characteristics of the mass lesions arising in a background of chronic calcific pancreatitis (CCP). METHODS: Eighty three patients, who presented with chronic pancreatitis (CP) and a mass lesion in the head of pancreas between February 2005 and December 2011, were included in the study. Patients who were identified to have malignancy underwent Whipple' s procedure and patients whose investigations were suggestive of a benign lesion underwent Frey's procedure. Student t-test was used to compare the mean values of imaging findings [common bile duct (CBD), main pancreatic duct (MPD) size] and laboratory data [Serum bilirubin, carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA 19-9)] between the groups. Receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC curve) analysis was done to calculate the cutoff valves of serum bilirubin, CA 19-9, MPD and CBD size. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive valve (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV) were calculated using these cut off points. Multivariate analysis was performed using logistic regression model. RESULTS: The study included 56 men (67.5%) and 27 women (32.5%). Sixty (72.3%) patients had tropical calcific pancreatitis and 23 (27.7%) had alcohol related CCP. Histologically, it was confirmed that 55 (66.3%) of the 83 patients had an inflammatory head mass and 28 (33.7%) had a malignant head mass. The mean age of individuals with benign inflammatory mass and those with malignant mass was 38.4 years and 45 years respectively. Significant clinical features that predicted a malignant head mass in CP were presence of a head mass in CCP of tropics, old age, jaundice, sudden worsening abdominal pain, gastric outlet obstruction and significant weight loss (P ≤ 0.05). The ROC curve analysis showed a cut off value of 5.8 mg/dL for serum bilirubin, 127 U/mL for CA 19-9, 11.5 mm for MPD size and 14.5 mm for CBD size. Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a debilitating neurological disorder that affects the aged population globally. This study aimed to explore how oral- and intraperitoneal-rotenone-induced PD alters brain urea levels, histopathology, and key Parkinsonism-related genes in the striatum. Hematoxylin and eosin staining was performed for histopathology assessment and real-time polymerase chain reaction was performed for gene expression. Rotenone 3 mg/kg body weight (Rot-3-ip) for 21 days and rotenone 50 mg/kg body weight (Rot-50-po) for 28 days significantly (p Snca, Becn1 and Prkaa1 gene expression in the striatum. Lewy bodies were visible in both Rot-3-ip and Rot-50-po rat brains. There were contrasting features in brain and liver histopathology between the oral and intraperitoneal rotenone treatment groups. However, there was no significant (p can have different impacts on the pathological sequence of events based on the molecular approach.

Nonlinear optical Zinc mixed bisthiourea Cadmium chloride (BTCC) crystals were synthesized and grown by slow evaporation method. The FTIR analysis reveals that the C-N stretching frequencies of thiourea are shifted towards the higher frequencies for pure and Zinc mixed BTCC and the C = S stretching frequencies are shifted towards the lower frequencies for pure and Zinc mixed BTCC crystals. These observations suggest that the metals coordinate with thiourea through sulphur. UV-Vis-NIR spectra were recorded to study the optical transparency of the grown crystals. The lower cutoff wavelength is observed at 233 nm for the pure BTCC crystals. There is no comparable change in the lower cutoff wavelength for the Zinc mixed BTCC crystals. The Nonlinear Optical (NLO) efficiency of the pure BTCC crystal decreases with the increase percentage mixing of Zinc. The SHG output for BTCC mixed with 1% zinc chloride is almost 9 times greater than the SHG output obtained for Pottasium Dihydrogen Phosphate (KDP) crystal. Vicker’s microhardness test done on the experimental crystals proves their greater physical strength.

A new semiorganic nonlinear optical crystal of bisthiourea nickel bromide (BTNB) was grown successfully by slow evaporation technique using water as solvent. The lattice parameters of the grown crystal have been determined by X-ray diffraction studies. Vibrational spectrum is recorded to determine symmetries of molecular vibrations. Optical absorbance spectrum recorded revealed that this crystal has good transparency in the visible region. The second harmonic generation test of BTNB confirmed the nonlinear nature of the crystal. The BTNB crystal was analyzed by a differential thermal analysis and thermogravimetric analysis (DTA-TGA) to obtain its thermal stability. Vickers microhardness test done on the crystal shows that the crystal has greater physical strength.

Psychosocial Profile of HIV Patients on HAART in Southern India

BACKGROUND: Mortality of HIV/AIDS patients comes down in India after the National Aids Control Organization started providing free Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) since 2004. Madurai ART Center started providing free ART since 2004. Psychosocial profile of this population explored in this study. METHODS: A cross sectional interview conducted during the year 2008 with semi structured questionnaire on HIV positive clients who are on Highly Active Anti-Retro- viral Therapy (HAART) for more than 6 months. Convenience sampling done and totally 433 clients were interviewed with informed consent. RESULTS: Three fourth (73.4%) of the clients know about ART centre through Government Hospitals or Primary Health Centre. Most of the Clients (98.6%) on ART are feels back to normal life or back to near normal life. Pill burden/ Pill fatigue perceived by clients is 4.8%.Discrimination perceived was 8.8% and mostly in their own house or by neighbors, but most of their children (99.2%) were not discriminated as per the clients. Spouse positive rate for the married clients was 61.5% and unmarried in this population was 4.6%. Major or minor psychological problems in this group were 39.7% and attempted suicide was 8.8%. Drug abuse (alcohol and smoking) while started on ART was 40.4% and the current abusers are 7.6%. CONCLUSION: This study supports effectiveness of free ART program and effective case referral from government institutions. High percentage of major or minor psychological problem warrants further exploratory study and may need psychological interventions in this population.
