Blunt traumatic aortic injury is the second leading cause of death after motor vehicle *** most frequent localisation of aortic lesion is the isthmus,especially in those who survived the *** we report a case of blunt traumatic aortic injury with unusual localisation and modality.A 31 years old man sustained a motorcycle accident,being run over by a *** tomography scan showed an atypical ascending aorta lesion,confirmed by intraoperative *** patient underwent emergency ascending aorta replacement with Dacron tubular *** patient was discharged uneventfully on 35th postoperative day,after multiple maxillofacial surgeries for concomitant injuries.

This research paper describes an SEE （Structural Engineering Encounter） Lab project. The paper reports on the development of a single-story, single-bay portal frame model as part of the AIMS2 （attract, inspire, mentor and support students） grant supported through the US DOE （Department of Education） summer research program at California State University, Northridge. This research effort is part of a comprehensive program to develop laboratory models of structures commonly encountered in civil engineering practice, which can serve the dual purpose of accomplishing engineering education and research in the areas of structural and earthquake engineering. The objective of the present study was to construct a physical model of the aforementioned frame to experimentally collect data due to the application of vertical and lateral loadings through instrumentation such as strain gages and an LVDT （linear variable differential transformer） displacement transducer, and also to make comparisons with theoretical and numerical predictions.

Determination of PCDD/F Levels in Wood Shavings Used as Bedding Material for Poultry Production

During 2006 and 2011, following the implementation of dioxin contamination monitoring in poultry meat, levels higher than legally allowed in meat from poultry slaughtered for human consumption, were found. The wood shavings used as bedding material in the poultry farm showed considerable high contaminations, indicating that these materials were the likely source of contamination of the animals. Wood shavings samples (n = 23), used as poultry litters in intensive farms of broilers, were analysed. In both episodes, contamination profiles of higher and lower concentrations, seem to be very similar, being OCDD, OCDF, 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-HpCDD and 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-HpCDF responsible for 97.4 % of the total contamination. The present work describes the analytical adapted, used methodology and the specific clean-up procedures, which revealed that recoveries of 13C12-Labelled compounds added to the wood shavings samples ranged from 71.3% to 86.3%.

Increasing Deaths Due to Malignancy in HIV＋ Patients is Associated with Integrase Inhibitor Therapy

Despite reductions in AIDS-related deaths, registries show HIV＋ patients are still dying at a younger age than HIV-peers. Although overall mortality has declined in this population, a growing percent of deaths are due to malignancy. Since the data demonstrating the growing percentage of deaths due to malignancy in the HIV＋ population is derived from registries, the study explores whether the subset dying from malignancy has particular characteristics that can be seen in a well-characterized cohort. In the well-characterized HIV＋ cohort, the percentage of deaths due to cancer was seen to increase over four years （2010-2013） from 21% to 24% to 38% to 40%. The mean CD4-count of those who died from malignancy was 252＋/-42 and 333＋/-36 in patients with death from other causes. The viral load was not suppressed in 26% of patients dying from malignancy. Of patients on integrase inhibitor therapy, 48% of deaths were due to malignancy while in patients not on this therapy, 10% of deaths were due to malignancy （relative risk = 4.8）. In HIV＋ patients, a low CD4-count, failure to achieve viral suppression, and use of integrase inhibitors were associated with malignancy as the cause of death. The association of a specific therapy, integrase inhibition, with malignancy is seen in the study.

We have already shown that IL-10 plays an important role in immunosuppression and metastatic dissemination in the rat B-cell lymphoma L-TACB *** was suggested that the up-regulation of IL10 production and IL-10 receptor(IL-10R)expression would be part of the transition from primary tumor to metastatic phenotype and that IL-10,besides its immunosuppressive activity,may act as a growth factor for metastatic L-TACB *** treatment of L-TACB-bearing rats with a single low-dose cyclophosphamide decreased IL-10 production,reverted immunosuppression and induced the immunologic rejection of tumor metastasis without any effect on primary tumor *** current aim was to investigate the effects of cyclophosphamide on the expression of IL-10 and IL-10R on primary and metastatic L-TACB *** that cyclophosphamide is a prodrug,we used mafosfamide,a compound that yields in vitro the same active metabolites as cyclophosphamide does in *** induced down-regulation of IL-10 production and IL-10R expression on metastatic cells and,concomitantly,inhibited metastatic cell *** suggest that mafosfamide would inhibit the regulatory loop mediated by the IL-10/IL-10R system and,as a consequence,metastatic cell *** results may have a considerable impact on the design of new therapies for metastatic lymphomas.

Slash-and-burn practices used by farmers in prior growing periods could affect soil quality, particularly topsoil properties. This study aimed to assess soil biophysical and chemical properties at different landscape levels within the watershed site. Soil samples were collected by a core method in the topsoil layer in slash-and-burn sites. Field analysis was on bulk density and porosity by the gravimetric method, while laboratory analysis was done on organic matter by the Loss on Ignitions Method and other macronutrients for crops (total nitrogen, phosphorus availability, and potassium availability) followed standard analytical methods. To see if there was a significant difference between sites, DMRT 5% was used. The results of the study showed slash-and-burn practice affects soil physical properties such that high bulk density in upstream, midstream, and downstream ranged from 1.55 g/cm3 to 1.71 g/cm3, 1.55 g/cm3 to 1.80 g/cm3, and 1.38 g/cm3 to 1.79 g/cm3 respectively. Poor porosity in upstream, midstream, and downstream ranged from 33.91% to 40.06%, 30.38% to 41.75%, and 30.91% to 46.65%, respectively. Organic matter content was low in the upstream, midstream, and downstream areas, ranging from 2.86% to 3.39%, 2.58% to 3.88%, and 2.91% to 3.88%, respectively. However, soil pH remains neutral, and nitrogen levels are low but near-optimal in the upstream and very low in the midstream and downstream. Phosphorus is extremely high upstream but very low in midstream and downstream. However, potassium remains at a low level close optimum level in the entire watershed.

Background: Liver transplantation is the treatment for end-stage liver diseases and well-selected malignancies. The allograft shortage may be alleviated with living donation. The initial UCLouvain experience of adult living-donor liver transplantation(LDLT) is presented. Methods: A retrospective analysis of 64 adult-to-adult LDLTs performed at our institution between 1998 and 2016 was conducted. The median age of 29(45.3%) females and 35(54.7%) males was 50.2 years(interquartile range, IQR 32.9–57.5). Twenty-two(34.4%) recipients had no portal hypertension. Three(4.7%) patients had a benign and 33(51.6%) a malignant tumor [19(29.7%) hepatocellular cancer, 11(17.2%) secondary cancer and one(1.6%) each hemangioendothelioma, hepatoblastoma and embryonal liver sarcoma]. Median donor and recipient follow-ups were 93 months(IQR 41–159) and 39 months(22–91), respectively. Results: Right and left hemi-livers were implanted in 39(60.9%) and 25(39.1%) cases, respectively. Median weights of right-and left-liver were 810 g(IQR 730–940) and 454 g(IQR 394–534), respectively. Graft-to-recipient weight ratios(GRWRs) were 1.17%(right, IQR 0.98%-1.4%) and 0.77%(left, 0.59%-0.95%). One-and five-year patient survivals were 85% and 71%(right) vs. 84% and 58%(left), respectively. Oneand five-year graft survivals were 74% and 61%(right) vs. 76% and 53%(left), respectively. The patient and graft survival of right and left grafts and of very small( < 0.6%), small(0.6%–0.79%) and large( ≥0.8%) GRWR were similar. Survival of very small grafts was 86% and 86% at 3-and 12-month. No donor died while five(7.8%) developed a Clavien–Dindo complication IIIa, IIIb or IV. Recipient morbidity consisted mainly of biliary and vascular complications; three(4.7%) recipients developed a small-for-size syndrome according to the Kyushu criteria. Conclusions: Adult-to-adult LDLT is a demanding procedure that widens therapeutic possibilities of many hepatobiliary diseases. The donor procedure can be done safely

Restoration of kidney tubular epithelium following sublethal injury sequentially involves partial epithelial–mesenchymal transition(pEMT),proliferation,and further redifferentiation into specialized tubule epithelial cells(TECs).Because the immunosuppressant cyclosporine-A produces pEMT in TECs and inhibits the peptidyl-prolyl isomerase(PPIase)activity of cyclophilin(Cyp)proteins,we hypothesized that cyclophilins could regulate TEC *** we demonstrate that in cultured TECs,CypA silencing triggers loss of epithelial features and enhances transforming growth factorβ(TGFβ)-induced EMT in association with upregulation of epithelial repressors Slug and *** pro-epithelial action of CypA relies on its PPIase *** contrast,CypB emerges as an epithelial repressor,because CypB silencing promotes epithelial differentiation,prevents TGFβ-induced EMT,and induces tubular structures in 3D *** addition,in the kidneys of CypB knockout mice subjected to unilateral ureteral obstruction,inflammatory and pro-fibrotic events were *** silencing/knockout leads to Slug,but not Snail,*** support of Slug expression depends on its endoplasmic reticulum location,where it interacts with calreticulin,a calcium-buffering chaperone related to Slug *** CypB silencing reduces ionomycin-induced calcium release and Slug upregulation,we suggest that Slug expression may rely on CypB modulation of calreticulin-dependent calcium *** conclusion,this work uncovers new roles for CypA and CypB in modulating TEC plasticity and identifies CypB as a druggable target potentially relevant in promoting kidney repair.
