Comparison of Oxidative Stability of Monogalactosyl Diacylglycerol, Digalactosyl Diacylglycerol, and Triacylglycerol Containing Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids

Oxidative stability of three different lipid classes, namely, monogalactosyl diacylglycerol (MGDG) and digalactosyl diacylglycerol (DGDG) from spinach and edible brown seaweed (Akamoku) and triacylglycerol (TAG) of linseed oil was compared. Analysis of oxygen consumption and polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) composition demonstrated that spinach DGDG had the highest oxidative stability, followed by Akamoku DGDG, Akamoku MGDG, spinach MGDG, and linseed TAG. These results disagree with the order of oxidative stability expected from the average number of bis-allylic positions of each lipid. Additionally, DGDG constituents of both spinach and Akamoku showed higher oxidative stability than their MGDG constituents. The unusual oxidative stability of MGDG and DGDG could be conferred by the protection of bis-allylic positions of the PUFA against oxidative attack by the galactosyl moiety of the GL.

A Twenty-Year Follow-up Case Study of an Office Worker Who Returned to Work despite Serious Memory Disorder Caused by Herpes Encephalitis

This study followed a 52-year-old male patient, who had suffered from severe impairment in recent memory due to se- quelae of herpes encephalitis, for 20 years. He returned to his highly intellectual work and performed well despite his doctor’s prediction. While the patient showed consistently poor results on various neuropsychological memory tests, he demonstrated incredible performance at work. This case exemplifies an extreme case that declarative memory is formed with the support of semantic memory, procedural memory, and his strong interests. Additionally, it offers lessons that results on memory tests do not necessarily correspond to the actual level of competence. The focal sites were found on both sides of the medial temporal lobe, predominantly on the left side. The T2-weighted magnetic resonance images (MRI) obtained 9 years after the onset confirmed widespread damage to the left brain including parahippocampal gyrus, hippocampus, spindle gyrus, and amygdaloid complex, with microlesions extending from the right parahippocampal gyrus to its antero-interior rim. However, the damage to hippocampus was presumed to be minor.

Acute Obstructive Hydrocephalus Caused by <i>Pseudomonas</i><i>aeruginosa</i>Ventriculitis after Transsphenoidal Surgery: Case Report

Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) frequently causes various infections, some of which are serious and require prompt medical detection and appropriate antibiotic selection. Although P. aeruginosa commonly exists within the nasal cavity, meningitis or ventriculitis following transsphenoidal surgery to relieve P. aeruginosa has been reported only occasionally. However, as the endoscopic transnasal approach is more widely utilized for the suprasellar lesions, nosocomical P. aeruginosa infection associated with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage becomes more common in patients with panhypopituitarism who undergo transsphenoidal surgery. We report a case of a 36-year-old man with an intrasellar craniopharyngioma presenting with an acute obstructive hydrocephalus caused by P. aeruginosa ventriculitis following transsphenoidal surgery. Treatment with optimal antibiotics was initiated immediately after P. aeruginosa was recognized as the pathogen, and was continued for 3 months. After removal of the infected fascia and fat graft used for the closure of CSF leakage and sellar floor reconstruction, endoscopic third ventriculostomy was successfully performed to treat the obstructive hydrocephalus induced by the occlusion of the fourth ventricle outlet, resulting in a positive outcome. Although the obstructive hydrocephalus caused by P. aeruginosa is extremely rare, prompt detection and appropriate treatment should be required once P. aeruginosa ventriculitis happens.

Proposition of a New Type of Jointless System For Existing Concrete Bridges

Since 1990s, the use of deicing salts （i.e., chlorides） has dramatically increased in areas with heavy snowfall in Japan. As a result, the water mixed with salts has accelerated the damage of the reinforced concrete （hereafter, RC） structures. Recently conducted inspection results of RC bridges have reported that many of the damages or deteriorations are observed at the girder ends and abutments This is caused from the water leakage due to the aged expansion joints. In general, the cost for repairing the damaged RC structures is much higher than that for renewing the expansion joints. Therefore, to prevent these damages, we developed a new highly durable jointless system, named RC plug joint, for existing RC bridges with a bridge length less than 40 meters. The RC plug joint connects the abutment＇s backwall to the superstructure＇s deck using reinforcing steel bars and fiber reinforced concrete. The newly developed RC plug joint system can prevent water leakage and allow for a smooth ride of vehicles at the joint. This paper will explore and discuss the development of the RC plug joint, analysis of conducted investigations, and future installation methods.

Subjective symptoms related to depression and suicidal risk in a Japanese community: a cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND: This cross-sectional study aimed to assess the association between self-reported somatic and mental symptoms and the presence of major depressive disorder (MDD) and suicidal risk among community dwellers in Japan. METHODS: From two locations in Japan, we recruited 734 community dwellers who underwent an annual health screening. Basic symptoms of MDD, dysthymia, and the presence of associated suicidal risk were determined using a brief structured diagnostic psychiatric interview, Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI). Information regarding self-reported somatic and mental symptoms was obtained from a self-administered questionnaire used in the annual health check-up. Suicidal risk was evaluated on the basis of six relevant questions asked in MINI. Logistic regression model was used to calculate age- and gender-adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for MDD. Further adjustment for basic symptoms of MDD was performed to calculate ORs and CIs for suicidal risk. RESULTS: A myriad of somatic symptoms, including headache, heavy headedness, eye strain, and shoulder stiffness [adjusted OR (95% CI), 11.4 (1.22 - 107) at location 1;5.17 (1.23 - 21.7) at location 2], were associated with the presence of MDD. Dysmenorrhea [6.07 (1.14 - 32.3) at location 1] and dysesthesia, arthralgia, and swelling in the extremities [2.72 (1.14 - 6.47) at location 2] were significantly associated with an increase in suicidal risk, independent of the presence of basic symptoms of MDD. CONCLUSION: Several somatic symptoms, especially pain-related ones, may serve as possible signs of depression and suicidal risk among community dwellers.

Leucine rich repeats (LRRs) are present in over 14,000 proteins that have been identified in viruses, bacteria, archaea, and eukaryotes. Two to sixty-two LRRs occur in tandem forming an overall arc shaped domain. There are eight classes of LRRs. Plant specific LRRs (class: PS-LRR) had previously been recognized in only plant proteins. However, we find that PS-LRRs are also present in proteins from bacteria. We investigated the origin of bacterial PS-LRR domains. PSLRR proteins are widely distributed in most plants;they are found in only a few bacterial species. There are no PS-LRR proteins from archaea. Bacterial PS-LRRs in twenty proteins from eleven bacterial species (in the three phyla: Proteobacteria, Cyanobacteria, and Bacteroidetes) are significantly more similar to the PS-LRR class than to the other seven classes of LRR proteins. Not only amino acid sequences but also nucleotide sequences of the bacterial PS-LRR domains show highly significant similarity with those of many plant proteins. The program, EGID (Ensemble algorithm for Genomic Island Detection), predicts that Synechococcus sp. CYA_ 1022 came from another organism. Four bacterial PS-LRR proteins contain AhpC-TSA, IgA peptidase M64, the immunoglobulin domain, the Calx-b domain, and the He_PIG domain;these domains show no similarity with any eukaryotic (plant) proteins, in contrast to the similarities of their respective PS-LRRs. The present results indicate that horizontal gene transfer (HGT) of genes/gene fragments encoding PS-LRR domains occurred between bacteria and plants, and HGT among the eleven bacterial species, of the three phyla, as opposed to descent from a common ancestor. There is the possibility of the occurrence of one HGT event from plant to bacteria. A series of HGTs might then have occurred recently and rapidly among these eleven species of bacteria.

Relationship between Self-Care and Hand Foot Syndrome Specific Quality of Life in Cancer Patients

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe adherence to self-care for hand-foot syndrome (HFS) and the relationship between self-care and health-related quality of life (QOL). Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 105 consecutive outpatients with HFS. To assess self-care for HFS and QOL, the participants were asked to complete self-care and HFS-14 (hand-foot syndrome specific QOL) questionnaires, respectively. Multiple regression models were used to identify the relationship between self-care and QOL. Results: Adherence to self-care for HFS was low, less than 50% for most of the items. Multivariate analysis revealed that poorer self-care (βs = -0.19;P = 0.03), depressive symptoms (βs = 0.43;P βs = 0.20;P = 0.04) were independent predictors of poorer QOL scores. Conclusions: We have identified a need for further research to develop effective programs of self-care in HFS.

Bonding Characteristics and Flexural Stiffening Effect of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastics Strand Sheets Bonded to Steel Beams

Corrosion of steel structures is unavoidable and the structural performance decreases dramatically due to the corrosion. As a repairing method for corroded steel members, bonding carbon fiber sheets with resin had been developed. The purpose of this study is to propose the flexural strengthening method for steel members by using CFRP （carbon fiber reinforced polymer） strand sheets. In order to clarify the stiffening effect and the debonding characteristics of CFRP strand sheets, and to optimize the strengthening design specifications, the flexural tests using high tension steel beams strengthened with CFRP strand sheets are performed. Two cases of experiments are carried out. In Experiment 1, the result from previous research is reflected in the strengthening design. Moreover in Experiment 2, the debonding characteristics obtained from Experiment 1 are reflected. As a result, it was clarified that CFRP strand sheets have stiffening effect equivalent to the theoretical value and its debonding property is practically high enough when FRP （fiber reinforcement polymer） sheets have an appropriate bonding length.

Highly-Efficient Conversion of Primary Amides to Nitriles Using Indium(III) Triflate as the Catalyst

Indium(III) triflate, a trivalent indium reagent, was shown to be a highly-efficient catalyst for the conversion of primary amides to the corresponding nitriles. The successful reactions required 5 mol% of indium(III) triflate, and toluene was proved to be the most suitable solvent. Various amides were subjected to this method, and each produced the corresponding nitriles in excellent yields.
