The booming electronics itself carries an impact on power quality. Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES) is proposed to enhance power quality in three-phase systems under various loads. This paper aimed to compensate the voltage sags under various faults in the grid systems. The SMES is selected as an energy storage unit to improve the capability of voltage sag compensation. Optimized Dual Fuzzy Flow (ODFF) logic controller is designed to prevent the voltage sag time during excessive phase voltage variation. Hence the proposed controller strategy reduces the total harmonic distortion during various fault conditions. To regulate the contribution of active power, the least possible value is improved using ODFF. The depth of voltage sags compensation is achieved by the over modulation and an iterative loop is designed in the control block. While protecting sensitive loads from voltage disturbances, and sags initiated by the power system, the proposed configuration is advantageous for an industrial implementation. It is found that the proposed method can result in more than 50% additional sag support time when compared with the previous methods such as PI and PSO. Utilizing MATLAB Simulink, compensation of sag and minimization of THD is established, and the simulation tests are performed to evaluate the performance of the proposed control method.

Electrical Capacitance Tomography (ECT) determines the dielectric permittivity of the interior object depending on the measurements of exterior capacitance. Generally, the electrodes are placed outside the PVC cylinder where the medium to be imaged is present;but in ECT using inter-electrode capacitance measurements can be achieved by placing inside of the dielectric medium. In the proposed ECT system, the ECT sensor is modeled using ANSYS software and the model is implemented in real ECT system. For each step of measurement, a stable AC signal is applied to a pair of electrodes that form a capacitor. The novel system is to measure the capacitance range variation in picofarad and the corresponding voltage ranges from 1 volt to 4 volts. The switching speed of all combinational electrodes is implemented using embedded system to achieve higher speed performance of AC ECT system which eliminates the drift and stray capacitance error. This is yielding the original image of unknown multiphase medium inside the electrodes using Lab VIEW. This paper investigates several advantages such as improved overall system performance;simple structure, avoids stray capacitance effect, reduces the drift problem and achieves high signal to noise ratio.

Vedic mathematics is the system of mathematics followed in ancient Indian and it is applied in various mathematical branches. The word “Vedic” represents the storehouse of all knowledge. Because using Vedic Mathematics, the arithmetical problems are solved easily. The mathematical algorithms are formed from 16 sutras and 13 up-sutras. But there are some limitations in each sutra. Here, two sutras Nikhilam sutra and Karatsuba algorithm are considered. In this research paper, a novel algorithm for binary multiplication based on Vedic mathematics is designed using bit reduction technique. Though Nikhilam sutra is used for multiplication, it is not used in all applications. Because it is special in multiplication. The remainder is derived from this sutra by reducing the remainder bit size to N-2 bit. Here, the number of bits of the remainder is constantly maintained as N-2 bits. By using Karatsuba algorithm, the overall structure of the multiplier is designed. Unlike the conventional Karatsuba algorithm, the proposed algorithm requires only one multiplier with N-2 bits only. The speed of the proposed algorithm is improved with balancing the area and the power. Even though there is a deviation in lower order bits, this method shows larger difference in higher bit lengths.

Nephrotic syndrome is one of the most common childhood kidney diseases. It is mostly found in the age group of 2 to 8 years. Around 10%-15% of nephrotic syndrome cases are non-responders of steroid treatment(SRNS).Angiotensin converting enzyme(ACE)(I/D) gene association studies are important for detecting kidney disease and herein we assessed the association of ACE(I/D) polymorphism with nephrotic syndrome in South Indian children. We recruited 260 nephrotic syndrome(162 boys and 98 girls) and 218(140 boys and 78 girls) control subjects. ACE I/D polymorphism was analyzed by PCR using genotype allele specific primers. In ACE(I/D), we did not find significant association for the ungrouped data of nephrotic syndrome children and the control subjects. Kidney biopsies were done in 86 nephrotic syndrome cases(minimal change disease, n = 51;focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, n = 27;diffuse mesangial proliferation, n = 8). We segregated them into the minimal change disease/focal segmental glomerulosclerosis groups and observed that the ACE’D’ allele was identified with borderline significance in cases of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis and the ’Ⅰ’ allele was assessed as having very weak association in cases of minimal change disease. ’Ⅱ’ genotype was weakly associated with minimal change disease. Gender specific analysis revealed weak association of’ID’ genotype with female nephrotic syndrome in females. Dominant expression of DD genotype was observed in males with nephrotic syndrome. Our finding indicated that ACE(I/D) has moderate association with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis. However, due to the limited number of biopsy proven focal segmental glomerulosclerosis subjects enrolled, further studies are required to confirm these results.

In order to facilitate the electricity market operation and trade in the restructured environment, ample transmission capability should be provided to satisfy the demand of increasing power transactions. The conflict of this requirement and the restrictions on the transmission expansion in the restructured electrical market has motivated the development of methodologies to enhance the Available Transfer Capability (ATC) of the existing transmission grids. The insertion of FACTS devices in electrical systems seems to be a promising strategy to enhance ATC. In this paper, the viability and technical merits of boosting ATC using Thyristor Controlled Series Compensator (TCSC) is being analyzed. The work has been carried out on IEEE 30 bus and IEEE 118 bus systems. Bilateral and multilateral transactions are considered. Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm and Genetic Algorithm (GA) are employed to obtain the optimal settings of TCSC.

Transgenic Bt crops producing insecticidal crystal proteins from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), so-called Cry toxins, have proved useful in controlling insect pests. Among the cry toxins, Cry1A toxins are important because of high toxicity to lepidopteran pests and their widespread distribution among Bt strains. In Cry1A proteins, toxin fragment is comprised of about 620 amino acids of N-terminal region and C-terminal half is not required for toxicity. Four indigenous isolates of Bt viz., T15, T16, T20 and T31 were screened by PCR-RFLP for 3’-truncated cry1A gene(s) corresponding to toxin fragment. RFLP analysis of cry1A amplicons obtained from the four isolates of Bt showed presence of cry1Ac-type gene alone in three isolates. One of the cry1Ac-postive isolates, T15 which showed 100 percent mortality in Helicoverpa armigera, was selected for cloning of DNA fragment of about 2.1 kb containing 3’-truncated cry1Ac gene. Nucleotide sequence data generated for 3’-truncated cry1Ac gene of T15 showed 98 to 99 percent homology with 1958 bp of already reported sequences of all cry1Ac genes (cry1Ac1 to cry1Ac24). Deduced amino acid sequence of cry1Ac of Bt strain, T15 showed one to four percent variation in comparison to all reported Cry1Ac holotypes (Cry1Ac1 to Cry1Ac24) by differing at 5 to 19 positions. This suggests that the cry1Ac toxin of Bt isolate, T15 is a new kind of its group.

Off-Pump CABG for Mulitvessel Coronary Artery Disease-Safe Incorporation into Surgical Practice

Introduction: Since its revival two decades ago development of the surgical technique, along with evidence and clinical outcomes of off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery (OPCAB) were brought into focus. Methods: We report a single surgeon, single center experience of the first 37 consecutive patients undergoing off-pump surgery. Patients were selected for OPCAB (study group) individually and matched retrospectively to a control group of 113 patients performed over an identical time frame. Data were retrieved from a hospital data base (TOMCAT). Results: Mean Logistic European System of Cardiac Operative Risk Stratification (EuroSCORE) was slightly higher in the off-pump group (3.8% versus 2.9%). One patient died during the study and this was in the off-pump CAB group (OPCAB-30 day mortality 2.7%). Operating time was slightly shorter in the off-pump group (3 hours 28 minutes versus 3 hours 49 minutes, p = 0.15). After exclusion of outliers, total hospital stay was significantly shorter for off-pump cases (mean 6.8 days versus 8.37 days), while Intensive Care Unit (ICU) stay (1.2 versus 1.4 days) and ventilation time were only slightly shorter (9.35 hours versus 10.6 hours) for off-pump cases. Chest tube drainage was significantly lower in the off-pump group (484 ml versus 744 ml, p = 0.04) with correspondingly slightly lower transfusion requirements and significantly increased discharge haemoglobin concentrations in OPCAB. There was one cerebrovascular accident (CVA) in the off-pump group and none in the on-pump group. Conclusion: In this study we show short term outcomes for introduction of off-pump into surgical technique. Length of ICU stay, ventilation times, chest tube drainage, transfusion re0 quirements and pre-discharge haemoglobin concentration all appeared superior in the off pump group.
