The paper describes the sol–gel process applied to synthesize a mercury-free Ba2Ca2Cu3O x precursor and the physicochemical properties of an Hg0.8Pb0.2Ba2Ca2Cu3O8+δ high-temperature superconductor (HTS) polycrystalline sample. The Ba2Ca2Cu3O x precursor with desired chemical and phase compositions was obtained using EDTA gel process followed by decomposition and calcination under optimized conditions. An Hg0.8Pb0.2Ba2Ca2Cu3O8+δ superconductor with a fine-grained microstructure, composed predominantly of the (Hg,Pb)-1223 phase in the form of plate-like crystallites or oval grains and with advantageous magnetic properties (T c(on) = 129.2 K, ΔT c = 6.5 K), was synthesized using the high-pressure crystallization method. At 20 K and 1 T, the critical current density of the studied sample was approximately 26 A/mm2, while at 4 K and 1 T it increased to 155 A/mm2. The high volume fraction of the (Hg,Pb)-1223 phase (89.1%) in the high-T c sample was associated with the low value of the average copper valence (2.11) in the calcinated Ba2Ca2Cu3O x precursor. Small amounts of non-superconducting secondary phases—BaCuO2, CaO, CaHgO2, CuO, Ca2CuO, BaPbO3—were also identified within the microstructure of Hg0.8Pb0.2Ba2Ca2Cu3O8+δ .

Despite many advances in the treatment of gastric variceal bleeding in the two past decades, its management continues to present a clinical challenge. Various treatment modalities have been proposed and since the first report in 1986 endoscopic injection sclerotherapy with cyanoacrylate tissue adhesives has become widely established in many countries as the treatment of choice for bleeding gastric varices. Severe complications of the treatment are infrequent.

The effect of cold high pressure densification(CHPD)on anisotropy of the critical current density(Jc)in《in situ》single core binary and alloyed MgB2 tapes has been determined as a function of temperatures at 4.2 K,20 K and 25 K as well as at applied magnetic fields up to 19 *** study includes binary and C4H6O5(malic acid)doped MgB2 tapes before and after *** is remarkable that the CHPD process not only improved the Jc values,in particular at the higher magnetic fields,but also decreased the anisotropy ratio,Г=JC^///JC^⊥In binary MgB2 tapes,the anisotropy factor F increases with higher aspect ratios,even after applying *** malic acid(C4H6O5)doped tapes,however,the application of CHPD leads only to small enhancements ofГ,even for higher aspect *** is attributed to the higher carbon content in the MgB2 filaments,which in turn is a consequence of the reduced chemical reaction path in the densified *** all applied field values,it was found that CHPD processed C4H6O5 doped tapes exhibit an almost isotropic *** constitutes an advantage in view of industrial magnet applications using wires with square or slightly rectangular configuration.

Fulminant liver failure following a marathon: Five case reports and review of literature

BACKGROUND The growing popularity of marathon and half-marathon runs has led to an increased number of patients presenting with exertion-induced heat stroke. Mild hepatic involvement is often observed in these patients;however, fulminant liver failure may occur in approximately 5% of all cases. Liver transplantation is a potentially curative approach for exertion-induced liver failure, although there is a lack of consensus regarding the criteria and optimal timing of this intervention. CASE SUMMARY This paper describes 5 patients (4 men and 1 woman) who were referred to the department where this study was performed with the diagnosis of exertioninduced acute liver failure. Three patients underwent liver transplantation, 1 recovered spontaneously, and 1 patient died on day 11 following the exertion. CONCLUSION Exertion-induced heat stroke may present as fulminant liver failure. These patients may recover with conservative treatment, may require liver transplantation, or may die. No definitive criteria are available to determine patient suitability for a conservative vs surgical approach.
