Quantum-mechanical effects in photoluminescence from thin crystalline gold films

Luminescence constitutes a unique source of insight into hot carrier processes in metals,including those in plasmonic nanostructures used for sensing and energy ***,being weak in nature,metal luminescence remains poorly understood,its microscopic origin strongly debated,and its potential for unraveling nanoscale carrier dynamics largely ***,we reveal quantum-mechanical effects in the luminescence emanating from thin monocrystalline gold ***,we present experimental evidence,supported by first-principles simulations,to demonstrate its photoluminescence origin(i.e.,radiative emission from electron/hole recombination)when exciting in the interband *** model allows us to identify changes to the measured gold luminescence due to quantum-mechanical effects as the gold film thickness is ***,such effects are observable in the luminescence signal from flakes up to 40 nm in thickness,associated with the out-of-plane discreteness of the electronic band structure near the Fermi *** qualitatively reproduce the observations with first-principles modeling,thus establishing a unified description of luminescence in gold monocrystalline flakes and enabling its widespread application as a probe of carrier dynamics and light-matter interactions in this *** study paves the way for future explorations of hot carriers and charge-transfer dynamics in a multitude of material systems.

In this paper,we present the analysis of the stellar system HIP 101227 to determine the actual number of components in the system,and their *** use dynamical modeling and complex spectrophotometric(involving atmospheric modeling)techniques with recent data,to determine the physical properties and orbital solution for the system,respectively,with better accuracy than past *** on our analysis,we found that the system is more consistent with being a quadruple rather than a binary or a triple system as suggested by previous *** total mass of the system determined from our SED analysis is 3.42±0.20 m,which is distributed almost equally between the four *** stars are found to be zero-age main sequence stars;i.e.,at the last stage of pre-main sequence,with age less than 200 myr and spectral types *** four stars have very similar physical characteristics,suggesting that the fragmentation process is the most likely theory for the formation and evolution of the system.

Prognostic significance of castrate testosterone levels for patients with intermediate and high risk prostate cancer

BACKGROUND Testosterone level of ment (ADT) in metastatic prostate cancer (PC). AIm To evaluate the effect of two different castrate testosterone levels,mical relapse free survival (BRFS) in patients with nonmetastatic intermediate and high risk PC receiving definitive radiotherapy (RT) and ADT. mETHODS Between April 1998 and February 2011;173 patients with intermediate and high risk disease were treated. Radiotherapy was delivered by either threedimensional- conformal technique to a total dose of 73.4 Gy at the ICRU reference point or intensity modulated radiotherapy technique to a total dose of 76 Gy. All the patients received 3 mo of neoadjuvant ADT followed by RT and additional 6 mo of ADT. ASTRO Phoenix definition was used to define biochemical relapse. RESULTS median follow up duration was 125 months. Ninety-six patients (56%) had castrate testosterone level mpared to other groups (P = 0.003). When we compare two values, it was found that using 20 ng/dL is better than 50 ng/dL in predicting the BRFS (AUC = 0.63 vs 0.58, respectively). CONCLUSION Castrate testosterone level of less than 20 ng/dL is associated with better BRFS and is better in predicting the BRFS. Further studies using current standard of care of high dose ImRT and longer ADT duration might support these findings.

River Water generally contains much lower suspended solids concentration, Bio-chemical Oxygen Demand and Chemical Oxygen Demand than industrial waste water. But even in river water treatment, electro-coagulation proves effective in removing up to 30% suspended solids with Fe electrode and up to 45% in case of Al electrode. The optimum current density for electro-coagulation was found to be around 70 A/m2 , optimum distance between electrodes was 10mm and optimum time for electro-coagulation of 1L sample was between 20-30min. The study showed that time, distance between electrodes and settling time were most important parameters for Al electrode and current density was most important parameter for Fe electrode. At lower current density, performance of Fe electrode was better than Al electrode. However, as current density and time was increased, performance of Al electrode was better. Hence, this experiment proves feasibility of electro-coagulation in suspended solids removal from river water.
