The Iberian wall lizard Podarcis hispanica forms part of a species complex with several morphologically and geneti- cally distinct types and populations, which may or may not be reproductively isolated. We analyzed whether female mate choice based on males＇ chemical signals may contribute to a current pre-mating reproductive isolation between two distinct populations of P. hispanica from central Spain. We experimentally examined whether females choose to establish territories on areas scent-marked by males of their own population, versus areas marked by males of the other population. Results showed that fe- males did not prefer scent-marks of males from their own population. In contrast, females seemed to attend mostly to among-individual variation in males＇ pheromones that did not differ between populations. Finally, to test for strong premating re- productive isolation, we staged intersexual encounters between males and females. The population of origin of males and females did not affect the probability nor the duration of copulations. We suggest that the different environmental conditions in each population might be selecting for different morphologies and different chemical signals of males that maximize efficiency of communication in each environment. However, females in both populations based mate choice on a similar condition-dependent signal of males. Thus, male signals and female mate choice criteria could be precluding premating reproductive isolation between these phenotypically ＂distinct＂ populations [Current Zoology 59 （2）： 210-220, 2013].

Objective: To characterize the immunogenicity and the induction of cross-reactive responses against mycobacterium tuberculosis(m. tuberculosis) of a proteoliposome(PL)from mycobacterium bovis Bacillus Calmette–Guerin(BCG) with and without alum hydroxide(AL) as adjuvant(PLBCG-AL and PLBCG, respectively) in BALB/c ***: BALB/c mice were inoculated with phosphate buffer solution, BCG, PLBCG and PLBCG-AL. The humoral immunogenicity was determined by ELISA [immunoglobulin G(Ig G), Ig G1 and Ig G2a] and the cellular immunogenicity was evaluated in vivo by delayed type hypersensitivity. The humoral cross-reactive response against m. tuberculosis was determined by Western ***: Sera from animals immunized with PLBCG-AL and PLBCG showed significant increase in specific total Ig G and Ig G1 antibodies and the presence of cross-reactive antibodies against m. tuberculosis antigens, which were more intense with the use of alum as adjuvant. mice immunized with PLBCG and PLBCG-AL also showed a specific cellular response in ***: The cellular and humoral immunogenicity of PLBCG and the capacity to induce cross-reactive responses against m. tuberculosis is in agreement with the protective capacity previously demonstrated by this vaccine candidate and supports the continuation of its evaluation in further stages.

AIm: To identify new markers of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) using a proteomic analysis. mETHODS: Patients with liver cirrhosis of the three most frequent etiologies: hepatitis C virus, hepatitis B virus and alcoholic liver disease, were included in the study. The samples were analysed by 2D-electrophoresis in order to determine the differential protein expression. The proteins were separated according to the charge in immobilized pH 3-10 gradient strips and then by sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Proteins of interest were excised, digested with trypsin and the resulting peptides were separated and identified. RESULTS: Three differentially expressed apolipoproteins (Apo) were identified based on the protein profile using proteomic techniques: Apo-A1, Apo-A4 and Apo-E. Apo-A4 levels were significantly lower in HCC than in non-HCC patients regardless of etiology (P multivariate logistic regression showed that Apo-A4 and Apo-A1 were the only independent factors related to HCC diagnosis (P may be used clinically as biomarkers of HCC with a high sensibility and specificity. These findings may provide additional insights into the mechanism of HCC development and progression.

Tuberculosis (TB) incidence within Healthcare workers remains one of the lowest occupation specific rates in the United States. We report a case of a 33-year-old African American male presented with a right chest mass and without fever, chills or cough. Bacterial and Fungal cultures were sent during the initial visit and were negative throughout the entire management of his care. After several months of surgical interventions, the patient appeared positive for TB;however a staff member contracted the disease. The patient was managed successfully with the four-drug regimen of Isoniazid, Rifampin, Pyrazinamide and Ethambutol and recovered well from his surgeries.

Impact of a Low Severity Fire on Soil Organic Carbon and Nitrogen Characteristics in Japanese Cedar Soil, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan

Slash and burn practices are widely used around the globe with different degrees of success which are mostly related to the impact of fire on soil properties. In Japan slash and burn practises, known as Yakihata, have a long history and are still used in Yamagata Prefecture today. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of a low severity controlled fire underneath Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) on brown forest soil (Cambisol). Japanese Cedar is the dominant species among plantations in Japan. We measured organic carbon and nitrogen content as well as changes in carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) stable isotope composition in a steep west facing slope under heavy precipitation (~2600 mm/a) and heavy snowfall (~3 to 4 m/a). The accumulation of Ctotal and Ntotal at the bottom of the slopes was remarkably higher at the slash and burned site than in the control forest site. After slash and burn δ15N isotopes in the slope in general became significantly lighter than in the control forest while the δ13C did not show any significant difference between the two sites except at the bottom of the slopes where δ13C was heavier in the forest. The results show that Ctotal and Ntotal values as well as the isotopes ratios of C and N change with decreasing elevation in the forest as well as in the burned site being consistent with leaching and erosion. The changes in soil nitrogen and carbon isotopes at the bottom of the slope appear to be related to the transport of material with different isotopic composition from the upper slope. The effect of the low severity fire (as part of the slash and burn practice) on soil organic carbon and nitrogen movement was enhanced by the steepness of the slopes and the high precipitation of Shonai region.

The author will prove that the group ^2Dp（3） can be uniquely determined by its order components, where p ≠ 2^m ＋ 1 is a prime number, p ≥ 5. more precisely, if OC（G） denotes the set of order components of G, we will prove OC（G） = OC（^2Dp（3）） if and only if G is isomorphic to ^2Dp（3）. A main consequence of our result is the validity of Thompson＇s conjecture for the groups under consideration.

Background: The AmbuAuraGain is a new single-use supraglottic airway device with gastric channel designed to facilitate intubation. The aim of the study was to assess the anatomic position and the performance of the AuraGain in fresh cadavers compared to that of the Intersurgical i-gel and LmA Supreme New Cuff. methods: The 3 devices were inserted in random order in 7 fresh cadavers without difficult airway criteria. The assessed items were: Insertion time, number of attempts and ease of insertion, airway seal pressure, ease of gastric tube insertion, endoscopic view of vocal cords, efficacy of guided tracheal intubation through the AuraGain and i-gel, and anatomic fit by lateral X-ray and neck dissections. Results: All devices were successfully inserted within 3 attempts, except for one case of the LmA Supreme. Adjusting manoeuvres were often required to accomplish correct insertion. A 16 G gastric tube was easily advanced through all AuraGain and LmA Supreme devices. Fiberoptic tracheal intubation was effectively achieved through all AuraGain and i-gel devices in less than 60 s. Lateral X-ray and neck dissections confirmed optimal alignment of all devices with the respiratory and digestive tracts. Conclusions: Insertion of the new AmbuAuraGain required adjusting manoeuvres in some cases, as observed with the other two devices, and achieved similar airway seal pressures. Passage of a large bore gastric tube was as fast as with the LmA Supreme and ease of guided intubation was similar to that of the i-gel.

We demonstrate antimonene as a saturable absorber(SA) to generate an ultrafast mode-locked and Q-switched laser in the 2 μm wavelength region. The two antimonene-based SAs were prepared and inserted separately in a thulium–holmiumdoped fiber laser to produce the pulsed laser. Antimonene was coated onto a tapered fiber to generate soliton mode-locked pulses and used in thin-film form for the generation of Q-switched pulses. The mode-locking was stable within a pump power of 267 m W–511 m W, and the laser operated at a central wavelength of 1897.4 nm. The mode-locked laser had a pulse width of 1.3 ps and a repetition rate of 12.6 mHz, with a signal-to-noise ratio of 64 d B. Q-switched laser operation was stable at a wavelength of 1890.1 nm within a pump power of 312 m W–381 m W. With the increase in pump power from 312 m W to 381 m W, the repetition rate increased to a maximum of 56.63 k Hz and the pulse width decreased to a minimum value of 2.85 μs. Wide-range tunability of the Q-switched laser was also realized within the wavelength range of1882 nm–1936 nm.
