BACKGROUND With an ongoing demand for transplantable organs,optimization of donor management protocols,specifically in trauma populations,is important for obta-ining a high yield of viable organs per *** management of brain-dead potential organ donors(BPODs)is controversial,leading to heterogeneous clinical management *** studies have shown that when levo-thyroxine was combined with other treatments,including steroids,vasopressin,and insulin,BPODs had better organ recovery and survival outcomes were increased for transplant *** To determine if levothyroxine use in combination with steroids in BPODs increased the number of organs donated in trauma *** A retrospective review of adult BPODs from a single level 1 trauma center over ten years was *** criteria included patients who were not solid organ donors,patients who were not declared brain dead(donation after circulatory death),and patients who did not receive steroids in their hospital *** and steroid administration,the number of organs donated,the types of organs donated,and demographic information were *** analyses were performed with P0.05).In the ST/LT group,68.1%(n=47)donated a high yield(3-5)of organ types per donor compared to 42.1%(n=8)in the ST group(P=0.038).There was no difference in the total number of organ types donated between the groups(P=0.068).CONCLUSION This study suggests that combining levothyroxine and steroid administration increases high-yield organ donation per donor in BPODs in the trauma patient *** to this study include

Sensor networks are envisioned to revolutionize our daily life by ubiquitously monitoring our environment and/or adjusting it to suit our needs. Recent progress in robotics and low-power embedded systems has made it possible to add mobility to small, light, low-cost sensors to be used in teams or swarms. Augmenting static sensor networks with mobile nodes addresses many design challenges that exist in traditional static sensor networks. This paper addresses the problem of topology control in mobile wireless networks. Limitations in communication, computation and energy capabilities push towards the adoption of distributed, energy-efficient solutions to perform self-deployment and relocation of the nodes. We develop a unified, distributed algorithm that has the following features. During deployment, our algorithm yields a regular tessellation of the geographical area with a given node density, called monitoring configuration. Upon the occurrence of a physical phenomenon, network nodes relocate themselves so as to properly sample and control the event, while maintaining the network connectivity. Then, as soon as the event ends, all nodes return to the monitoring configuration. To achieve these goals, we use a virtual force-based strategy which proves to be very effective even when compared to an optimal centralized solution. We assess the performance of our approach in the presence of events with different shapes, and we investigate the transient behavior of our algorithm. This allows us to evaluate the effectiveness and the response time of the proposed solution under various environmental conditions.

The stress distribution around a circular borehole has been studied extensively. The existing analytical poroelastic solutions, however, often neglect the complex interactions between the solid and fluid that can significantly affect the stress solution. This is important in unconventional gas reservoirs such as coalbeds and shale formations. In order to address this limitation, this paper presents the development of a poroelastic solution that takes into account the effect of gas sorption-induced strain. The solution considers drainage of the reservoir fluid through a vertical wellbore in an isotropic, homogenous,poroelastic rock with non-hydrostatic in situ stress field. The sorption-induced shrinkage of coal is modelled using a Langmuir-type curve which relates the volumetric change to the gas pressure. The redistributed stress field around the wellbore after depletion is found by applying Biot’s definition of effective stress and Airey’s stress functions, which leads to a solution of the inhomogeneous Biharmonic equation. Two sets of boundary conditions were considered in order to simulate the unsupported cavity(open-hole) and supported cavity(lined-hole) cases. The implementation was verified against a numerical solution for both open-hole and lined-hole cases. A comparative study was then conducted to show the significance of the sorption-induced shrinkage in the stress distribution. Finally, a parametric study analysed the sensitivity of the solution to different poroelastic parameters. The results demonstrate that the developed solution is a useful tool that can be employed alongside complex flow models in order to conduct efficient, field-scale coupled hydro-mechanical simulations, especially when the stressdependent permeability of the reservoir is of concern.

An ocean forecasting system has been developed for the coastal area of Puerto Rico and the *** *** paper presents the development and validation of the Puerto Rico Operational Regional Ocean Modeling System(PRO-ROMS)developed by the Caribbean Coastal Ocean Observing System(CARICOOS),which aims at improving currently available short-term forecasts of ocean currents for this region,and to resolve sub-mesoscale variability absent from the currently operational regional *** coastal ocean forecasting system is based on the Regional Ocean Modeling System(ROMS),and provides a 3-day forecast of ocean currents,water levels,temperature and *** and lateral boundary conditions are derived from the *** Oceanographic Office(NAVOCEANO)operational AmSeas forecasting system,a 3.6-km resolution application of the regional Navy Coastal Ocean Model(NCOM)that encompasses the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean *** conditions are interpolated from the Navy’s Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere Mesoscale Prediction System(COAMPS)with the exception of surface stresses,which are computed from a 2-km application of the Weather Research and Forecasting(WRF)model used by National Centers for Environmental Protection’s(NCEP)National Digital Forecast Database(NDFD).Tidal variability is imposed using ROMS spectral forcing by specifying the harmonic phases and amplitudes from the TPXO global inverse tide solutions at the boundaries and sub-tidal conditions are imposed by filtering out high frequencies of barotropic variables from the lateral boundary conditions interpolated from *** results of sea surface height are validated with NOAA tide gauges,ocean currents are validated with Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers(ADCP)and High Frequency Radars(HFR).Computed statistics show improvement of the ocean current forecast in PRO-ROMS compared to AmSeas,especially at higher frequencies dominated by the tides and in small channels where the bathymetry is
