The use of cognitive mobile games to assess cognitive function of healthy subjects under various inspiratory loads

Objective:The aim of this work was to determine if scoring mechanisms embedded in cognitive mobile games(CMG)designed for cognitive training are sensitive enough to detect changes in cognitive function induced by various acute respiratory loads in healthy *** and methods:Thirty healthy subjects participated in this study(25±4 years old,13 women).A set of three brief CMG was used to assess cognitive function(Rush Back,Must Sort,True Color)in control situation and at four different inspiratory loads(through a mouthpiece without resistance and with 10,50 and 70%of the maximal inspiratory pressure).Results:Statistically significant decreases in CMG scores were observed in Rush Back(p=0.032)and True Color(p=0.002)when the subjects breathed through the mouthpiece without resistance compared to the control condition.A statistical difference was observed for Must Sort(p=0.003)between baseline and 10%of Inspiratory Threshold Load(ITL).Significant differences for the three games were observed between the baseline and 50%of ITL and between baseline and 70%of ***:CMG designed for cognitive training are sensitive in detecting transitional changes in cognitive function induced by low,medium and high acute respiratory loads in healthy *** offers interesting new possibilities for the assessment and long-term follow-up of patients suffering from chronic respiratory disease,since this type of assessment could easily be completed independently by patients in their own homes,and could be combined with rehabilitation exercises as an evaluative measure.

Effectiveness of ivermectin mass drug administration in the control of soil-transmitted helminth infections in endemic populations: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Stress granules(SGs)represent important non-membrane cytoplasmic compartments,involved in cellular adaptation to various stressful conditions(e.g.,hypoxia,nutrient deprivation,oxidative stress).These granules contain several scaffold proteins and RNA-binding proteins,which bind to mRNAs and keep them translationally silent while protecting them from harmful *** the role of SGs in cancer development is still poorly known and vary between cancer types,increasing evidence indicate that the expression and/or the activity of several key SGs components are deregulated in colorectal tumors but also in pre-neoplastic conditions(e.g.,inflammatory bowel disease),thus suggesting a potential role in the onset of colorectal cancer(CRC).It is therefore believed that SGs formation importantly contributes to various steps of colorectal tumorigenesis but also in *** CRC is the third most frequent cancer and one of the leading causes of cancer mortality worldwide,development of new therapeutic targets is needed to offset the development of chemoresistance and formation of *** SGs assembly may therefore represent an appealing therapeutic strategy to re-sensitize colon cancer cells to anti-cancer *** this review,we summarize the current knowledge on SGs in colorectal cancer and the potential therapeutic strategies that could be employed to target them.

Mobility affects copulation and oviposition dynamics in Pieris brassicae in seminatural cages

When, how often and for how long organisms mate can have strong consequences for individual fitness and are crucial aspects of evolutionary ecology. Such determinants are likely to be of even greater importance in monandrous species and species with short adult life stages. Previous work suggests that mobility, a key dispersal? related trait, may affect the dynamics of copulations, but few studies have investigated the impact of individual mobility on mating latency, copulation duration and oviposition latency simultaneously. In this paper, we monitored the copulation dynamics of 40 males and 40 females, as well as the oviposition dynamics of the females of the Large White butterfly Pieris brassicae, a facultative long-distance disperser butterfly. Individuals from a breeding were selected to create a uniform distribution of mobility and we recorded the timing, number and duration of all copulations in a semiexperimental system. We showed that mobility, measured as the time spent in flight under stressful conditions (a proxy of dispersal tendency), correlates with all aspects of copulation dynamics: mobile males and females mated earlier and for shorter periods than less mobile individuals. In turn, late mating females increased the time between copulation and oviposition. These results feed the previously described mobility syndrome of R brassicae, involving morphological and physiological characters, with life-history traits. We suggest that the reduction of mating latency and copulation duration has an adaptive value in dispersing individuals, as their life expectancy might be shorter than that of sedentary individuals.

AU-rich element-binding proteins in colorectal cancer

Trans-acting factors controlling mRNA fate are critical for the post-transcriptional regulation of inflammation-related genes, as well as for oncogene and tumor suppressor expression in human cancers. Among them, a group of RNA-binding proteins called "Adenylate-Uridylate-rich elements binding proteins"(AUBPs)control mRNA stability or translation through their binding to AU-rich elements enriched in the 3'UTRs of inflammation-and cancer-associated mRNA transcripts. AUBPs play a central role in the recruitment of target mRNAs into small cytoplasmic foci called Processing-bodies and stress granules(also known as P-body/SG). Alterations in the expression and activities of AUBPs and Pbody/SG assembly have been observed to occur with colorectal cancer(CRC)progression, indicating the significant role AUBP-dependent post-transcriptional regulation plays in controlling gene expression during CRC ***, these alterations contribute to the pathological expression of many early-response genes involved in prostaglandin biosynthesis and inflammation,along with key oncogenic pathways. In this review, we summarize the current role of these proteins in CRC development. CRC remains a major cause of cancer mortality worldwide and, therefore, targeting these AUBPs to restore efficient post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression may represent an appealing therapeutic strategy.

为克服既有原子力显微镜(AFM)悬臂式探针的谐振频率难以超过3.5 MHz,Q值低、成像速度低及在液体中成像效果欠佳等缺点,设计并制作了一种基于微机电系统(MEMS)谐振器的I2形探针,并成功实现了成像实验。为更进一步提高I2形探针的力灵敏度,从结构设计和检测方法入手,对原有探针进行改进。设计了简单有效的电阻差分检测方法,成功去处了输入端与输出端的耦合现象;采用局部离子注入的方法,提高了压阻敏感的传输效率。实验结果显示,在输入信号相同的条件下,改进后探针的输出信号与原有探针相比,输出信号得到了明显提高。计算结果表明,采用新方法制作的探针可使力灵敏度提高10倍以上。

Microclimatic parameters affect Cladosporium rot development and berry quality in table grapes

Cladosporium cladosporioides is an emerging pathogenic fungus that causes Cladosporium rot in postharvest table grapes(Vitis vinifera). However,studies investigating the infection process of C. cladosporioides are lacking. Therefore, this study aimed to elucidate the infection process by investigating the influence of microclimatic parameters(temperature, wetness and fungal age) in C. cladosporioides pathogenesis, activities of grape defense-related enzymes and grape quality during the infection. C. cladosporioides effectively infects grapes by developing distinct colonies on the artificial wounds and berry surfaces, completing its life cycle within 48 h. The C. cladosporioides disease incidence optimally occurred at 20 ℃ and 25 ℃. Wetness played an influential role in the infectivity of C. cladosporioides and 7-day-old C. cladosporioides resulted in the most serious disease incidence of table grapes. As a result of infection, the quality of grapes was affected, including berry weight, p H, titratable acidity(TA), total soluble solids(TSS), and ascorbic acid level. This infection also induced defense-related enzymes, including polyphenoloxidase(PPO), peroxidase(POD), phenylalanine ammonialyase(PAL), and catalase(CAT), at certain times. The findings of this study demonstrated that Cladosporium rot development depended on the microclimatic parameters of grapes, significantly affected the grape quality and induced grape's defense-related enzymes.

Human sperm quality and lipid content after migration into normal ovulatory human cervical mucus containing low numbers of leukocytes

The aim of this study was to investigate whether a relationship exists between the presence of low numbers of leukocytes in normal ovulatory cervical mucus and sperm quality and lipid content after migration. The percentages of live, motile and morphologically normal spermatozoa, movement parameters assessed by computer-aided sperm analysis （CASA）, and ionophore-induced acrosome reaction measured by flow cytometry were determined before and after migration. High-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection was used to measure the sperm lipid content, including the various diacyl subspecies. The number of leukocytes found in solubilized mucus samples was counted using a haemocytometric method. Overall, the presence of leukocytes in the cervical mucus samples did not significantly influence sperm motility and morphology, sperm kinematic parameters, or the sperm content in sphingomyelin or cholesterol. In contrast, after migration, the decrease in various sperm diacyls and the level of induced acrosome reaction was significantly less pronounced in mucus samples containing ≥10^4 leukocytes than in mucus samples with no or rare leukocytes whereas the level of induced acrosome reaction was higher. The present data suggest that the low level of leukocytes found in normal ovulatory cervical mucus could influence the process of sperm lipid remodelling/capacitation.

Association between Family Environment and Sexual Behaviour of Adolescents in Burkina Faso

Studies conducted in Africa have demonstrated the existence of a significant association between family environment and the sexual behaviour of adolescents. Generally, empirical studies of this topic are based on parental control, and family or conjugal instability and socialization approaches. The objective of this study is to assess the association between family environment and the sexual behaviour of adolescents aged 12 to 19 years. The 2004 National Survey of Adolescents (NSA) in Burkina Faso provides data for studying operationalization. Analyses were bivariate and multivariate. The former were conducted using cross tabulations while the latter used three logistic regression models. Results indicate a significant but low association among family environment variables. Absence of both parents, or a number of individuals under 20 years old higher than the number of adults in a household is not systematically associated with risky sexual behaviour. Parental control was shown to be more discriminating of sexual behaviour of adolescents from Burkina Faso, compared with communication with family members regarding sexuality. Despite current ongoing economic crises and sociocultural mutations in Burkinabe societies, household members and family still play major roles in adolescents’ education. Results reinforce sexual and reproductive health programs where parents and household members are central to strategies.
