Feasibility study applied to mapping tidal effects in the Pannonian basin--An effort to check location dependencies atμGal level

This paper summarizes the main instrumental and methodological points of the tidal research which was performed in the framework of the National Scientific Research Fund Project K101603. Since the project is still running the tidal analysis results published here are only preliminary. Unmodelled tidal effects have been highlighted in some recent absolute gravity measurements carried out in the Pannonian basin resulting in a periodic modulation exceeding the typical standard deviations （±1microGal） of the drop sets. Since the most dominant source of the daily gravity variation is the bulk tidal effect, the goal of the project is to check its location dependency at BGal level. Unfortunately Hungary has had no dedicated instrumentation, so an effort was made to make the available LaCoste- Romberg spring G meters capable for continuous recording. As a reference instrument the GWR SG025 operated in the Conrad Observatory, Austria was also used and in the mean time of the project, a Scintrex CG-5 became also available, Eventually 6 instruments at 5 different locations were operated for 3 9 months mainly in co-located configuration. Although many experiments （moving mass calibrations） were done to determine the scale factors and scale functions of the instruments, the direct comparison of the tidal parameters obtained from the observations is still questionable. Therefore the ratio of the delta factors of O1 and M2 tidal constituents was investigated supposing that M2 is much more influenced by the ocean loading effect than O1. The slight detected increase of δ（O1 ）/δ（M2）（≈0.2%） toward east does not contradict to theory. This result has to be validated in the near future by analyzing available ocean loading models.

Time of sunrise and hours with daylight may have an effect on the seasonality and diurnal variation of heart attack

Background The time of onset of myocardial infarction shows seasonal and daily variation. We aimed to investigate whether the number of hours with daylight has an effect on the seasonal variation of heart attack, and whether the time of sunrise has an effect on the diurnal rhythm of myocardial infarction. Methods We carried out a retrospective database study covering all patients admitted to any acute care hospital with the diagnosis of myocardial infarction in Hungary between January 2004 and December 2005 （n=32 329）. Data were collected from the National Health Insurance Fund Administration （OEP） according to the International Classification of Diseases （ICD 121, 122） and National Meteorology Service （OMSZ）. In case of patients who occurred in the database several times the events have been considered as a separate case. Results With consideration to seasonal variation, the peak period of heart attack was found in the spring, with the lowest number of events in the summer. The number of hours with daylight showed a weak negative correlation with the occurrence of myocardial infarction （r=-0.108, P 〈0.05）. With respect to diurnal variation, the peak period of daily events was between 6-12 in the morning （35.57%）. We have found a positive correlation between the time of sunrise and sunset and the occurrence of myocardial infarction （P 〈0.01）. Conclusion Based on our findings, the number of hours with daylight and the time of sunrise may be connected with the chances of having heart attack; however other factors, such as high blood pressure, diabetes or smoking may also have an influence.

Pelvic pain in endometriosis: is success of therapy gone in cigarette smoke?

The objective of the study was to assess potential individual factors influencing the efficacy of combined surgical and medical therapy in en-dometriosis patients with pelvic pain. For this purpose we performed a prospective study using a specifically designed questionnaire among patients suffering from persistent pelvic pain and undergoing laparoscopy and further GnRH analogue therapy in a university-based gyne-cologic department. Eighty-one women of re-productive age with histologically confirmed endometriosis were enrolled. A questionnaire gathered information from women on the fol-lowing groups of variables: age, marital status, education, reproductive and medical history including previous pregnancies and parity, knowledge of accompaniing pelvic disorders, concurrent cigarette smoking, as well as general quality of life estimates including self-image. Pelvic pain was scored using a visual analogue scale. Patients filled out the questionnaires before surgery and upon completing medical therapy. Data were statistically evaluated. After cessation of therapy, 53% of patients reported absence of pain. Only 12% of pain-free patients were smokers. This corresponded to slightly more than one third (35%) of all smokers in the study. However, 56% of non-smoker participants reported a positive outcome that proved to be significantly larger than the ratio of pain-free smoker participants (p = 0.02). Improvement in quality of life was reported by 74% of all patients, and only 9% of them were smokers. However, 47% were smokers among patients reporting no change or worsening in quality of life (p < 0.01). Based on our results, we can conclude, that regular smoking might have a disadvantageous impact on the success rate of combined surgical and medical therapy for endometriosis related pelvic pain.
