An amperometric hydrogen peroxide biosensor using a nanobiocomposite based on neutral red modified carbon nanotubes and co-immobilized glucose oxidase and horseradish peroxidase is reported. Modification of the nanobiocomposite electrode with neutral red resulted in a sensitive, low-cost and reliable H_2O_2 sensor. The use of carbon nanotubes, as the conductive part of the composite, facilitated fast electron transfer rates. The biosensor was characterized for the influence of p H, potential and temperature. A remarkable feature of the biosensor is the detection of H_2O_2 at low applied potentials where the noise level and interferences are minimal. The sensor has a fast steady-state measuring time of 10 s with a quick response(2 s). The biosensor showed a linear range from 15 n M to 45 m M of H_2O_2 and a detection limit of 5 n M. Nafion, which is used as a binder, makes the determination free from other electroactive substances. The repeatability, reproducibility,stability and analytical performance of the sensor are very good.

BACKGROUND There is an unmet need to evaluate the burden of cardiometabolic risk factors in young South Asian adults,who are not preselected for *** To evaluate young North Indian men(aged 20-50 years)for burden of cardiometabolic risk factors,in relation to parameters of homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance(HOMA-IR)and beta-cell function(oral disposition index[oDI]).METHODS Study participants were invited in a fasting ***,anthropometric,and medical data were collected,and 75 g oral glucose tolerance test was performed with serum insulin and plasma glucose estimation at 0,30,and 120 *** were divided into quartiles for HOMA-IR and oDI(category 1:Best HOMA-IR/oDI quartile;category 3:Worst HOMA-IR/oDI quartile)and composite HOMA-IR/oDI phenotypes(phenotype 1:Best quartile for both HOMA-IR and oDI;phenotype 4:Worst quartile for both HOMA-IR and oDI)were *** We evaluated a total of 635 men at a mean(±SD)age of 33.9±5.1 years and body mass index of 26.0±3.9 kg/m^(2).Diabetes and prediabetes were present in 34(5.4%)and 297(46.8%)participants,***/obesity,metabolic syndrome,and hypertension were present in 388(61.1%),258(40.6%),and 123(19.4%)participants,*** prevalence of dysglycaemia,metabolic syndrome,and hypertension was significantly higher in participants belonging to the worst HOMA-IR and oDI quartiles,either alone(category 3 vs 1)or in combination(phenotype 4 vs 1).The adjusted odds ratios for dysglycaemia(6.5 to 7.0-fold),hypertension(2.9 to 3.6-fold),and metabolic syndrome(4.0 to 12.2-fold)were significantly higher in individuals in the worst quartile of HOMA-IR and oDI(category 3),compared to those in the best quartile(category 1).The adjusted odds ratios further increased to 21.1,5.6,and 13.7,respectively,in individuals with the worst,compared to the best composite HOMA-IR/oDI phenotypes(phenotype 4 vs 1).CONCLUSION The burden of cardiometabolic risk factors is hi

Colorectal carcinogenesis(CRC) imposes a major health burden in developing countries. It is the third major cause of cancer deaths. Despite several treatment strategies, novel drugs are warranted to reduce the severity of this disease. Adenomatous polyps in the colon are the major culprits in CRC and found in 45% of cancers, especially in patients 60 years of age. Inflammatory polyps are currently gaining attention in CRC, and a growing body of evidence denotes the role of inflammation in CRC. Several experimental models are being employed to investigate CRC in animals, which include the APC^(min/+) mouse model, Azoxymethane, Dimethyl hydrazine, and a combination of Dextran sodium sulphate and dimethyl hydrazine. During CRC progression, several signal transduction pathways are activated. Among the major signal transduction pathways are p53, Transforming growth factor beta, Wnt/β-catenin, Delta Notch, Hippo signalling, nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 and Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 pathways. These signalling pathways collaborate with cell death mechanisms, which include apoptosis, necroptosis and autophagy, to determine cell fate. Extensive research has been carried out in our laboratory to investigate these signal transduction and cell death mechanistic pathways in CRC. This review summarizes CRC pathogenesis and the related cell death and signal transduction pathways.

Nutritional status of children in rural India: a case study from Tamil Nadu, first in the world to initiate the Mid-Day Meal scheme

In India, during the mid-nineties the Union Government had initiated the Mid-Day Meal schemes in schools to promote primary education on one hand, and to reduce malnutrition on the other. However, Tamil Nadu had launched this program several decades before;during the regime of Mr. Kumarasami Kamraj (1954-1963). An empirical study was undertaken in the rural areas of Tamil Nadu, in the south of India, to understand the nutritional status of the children between 11 and 18 years old. This group is vulnerable, as during this age, individuals undergo physical and mental changes. We calculated the Body Mass Index (BMI) of school children to assess their nutritional status. A total of 806 school children took part in this study and the majority of them were found to be underweight in the study region. Irrespective of their age group and sex, as per the WHO’s international standards, 83% of the students were underweight (BMIBMI 18.5 - 24.9), and of the rest, 0.39% and 0.06% were in the BMI range of 25 - 29.9 (overweight) and 30 - 35.9 (obese), respectively. Based on available data, a regression analysis was carried out. This regression model showed that students’ age, sex and father’s occupation significantly affects their BMI. Further analysis showed that BMI was independent of the students’ blood group. It was concluded that malnutrition among school children can be eliminated by providing additional healthy foods and by improving the Socio Economic Background (SEB) of the region.

A Study on Vehicle Detection and Tracking Using Wireless Sensor Networks

Wireless Sensor network (WSN) is an emerging technology and has great potential to be employed in critical situations. The development of wireless sensor networks was originally motivated by military applications like battlefield surveillance. However, Wireless Sensor Networks are also used in many areas such as Industrial, Civilian, Health, Habitat Monitoring, Environmental, Military, Home and Office application areas. Detection and tracking of targets (eg. animal, vehicle) as it moves through a sensor network has become an increasingly important application for sensor networks. The key advantage of WSN is that the network can be deployed on the fly and can operate unattended, without the need for any pre-existing infrastructure and with little maintenance. The system will estimate and track the target based on the spatial differences of the target signal strength detected by the sensors at different locations. Magnetic and acoustic sensors and the signals captured by these sensors are of present interest in the study. The system is made up of three components for detecting and tracking the moving objects. The first component consists of inexpensive off-the shelf wireless sensor devices, such as MicaZ motes, capable of measuring acoustic and magnetic signals generated by vehicles. The second component is responsible for the data aggregation. The third component of the system is responsible for data fusion algorithms. This paper inspects the sensors available in the market and its strengths and weakness and also some of the vehicle detection and tracking algorithms and their classification. This work focuses the overview of each algorithm for detection and tracking and compares them based on evaluation parameters.
