Aim Portable devices that accurately detect the composition of expired gases and changes in VO_(2)open new possibilities in research methodology and *** The purpose of this study was to compare the oxygen consumption(VO_(2))measurements of the VO_(2)Master Pro(VM)to the Cosmed K5(K5)during walking,jogging,and running in field and lab *** Twelve proficient runners,with a current 10 k pace of≥11.29 km/h,performed 3 matched intervals at 3 different speeds(4.82,8.05,11.29 km/h)on a treadmill and on an outdoor *** airflow test was also performed on both devices by pumping air through the devices using a 3 L syringe timed to a metronome at 15,25,and 35 beats/*** The VM did not report walking data for most *** treadmill running,there were significant differences in VO_(2)(47.86±3.94 vs.29.56±4.15 mL/kg/min),ventilation(V_(e))(71 vs.57 mL/min),and tidal volume(TV)(1.89 vs.1.56 L)between the K5 and VM respectively(P<0.05).Outdoor analysis also showed significant differences between devices in VO_(2),V_(e),and TV(P<0.05).The airflow test showed significant differences between the devices in V_(e)and TV(P<0.05).Conclusion These results suggest that there are significant discrepancies between the K5 and the VM,likely due to differ-ences in TV measurement.

Anti-Stokes green and red emission from U3+: LaCl3 can be produced by infrared laser excitation at 975.3 nm, 977.7 nm and 979.4 nm at 8K. The upconversion luminescence intensity dependence upon the excitation laser power was measured and analyzed. The results show that depending on the excitation wavelength, the mechanisms responsible for the upconversion process are two-photon absorption and excited-state absorption.

Fruit fly species＇ responses to lures are critically important, especially when a single lure might be recommended for the purpose of trapping multiple fruit fly species in commercial fruit orchards. Fruit industries are facing threats from the recent invasion of the oriental fruit fly Bactrocera dorsalis （Hendel） into novel areas in South Africa. The objective of this study was to test the relative efficiency of 13 different trapping systems for fruit fly species in mango orchards in South Africa. Evaluation of the different monitoring systems was conducted during the 2013-2014 mango season in the Vhembe district municipality of Limpopo, South Africa. Four orchards, where Tommy Atkins was cultivated, were used to compare the efficacy of the trapping systems. Trapping data （N = 48 observation incidences per trapping system） were analyzed using a non-parametric ANOVA. Pronounced variation in species attractiveness across the trapping systems was found. The enriched ginger oil （EGO） PherolureTM captured 33.77% of all the Ceratitis spp., while the Invader-lureTM captured 36.47% of the total number of B. dorsalis trapped. Torula yeast pellets are not recommended for fruit fly trapping due to the relative low trap catch numbers and high non-target catches. These results are important and significant for on-farm monitoring strategies, as well as for invasion monitoring systems currently in place to detect the distribution ofB. dorsalis in South Africa.

Establishing a Relationship between Coal Quality and the Enrichment of Radionuclides in Coal Combustion Residues

Coal-fired power plants (CFPP) provide approximately 40% of the world’s energy demand. Naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM) contained in coal become enriched in coal combustion residues as a result of the elimination of carbon during combustion. The fly ash and bottom ash produced from CFPP may be significant sources of exposure to naturally occurring radionuclides for the population near the combustion plant or ash dumps. Despite this fact, very few studies have actually addressed the relationship of the NORM enrichment factors and the quality of coal used. This paper aims to relate the quality of coal to the enrichment factors for the radionuclides of interest (K40, Ra226, Th232 and Po210) in coal combustion residues from three South African CFPP. The data from other CFPP was also taken into account to establish this correlation. The feedstock coal used in these CFPP is typically low quality, with ash content in the range of 25 - 45 wt%. The radionuclides investigated were determined by gamma spectrometry with the exception of Po210, which was determined by alpha spectrometry. The enrichment factors for the radionuclides of K40, Ra226, Th232 and Po210 in the fly ash and bottom ash (except Po210) was found to be directly proportional to the quality of coal. That is when the ash percentage increased (coal quality decreased) the enrichment factor decreased. The Po210 radionuclide in the bottom ash had an enrichment factor less than one. The relationship between coal quality and enrichment factors for the radionuclides of K40, Ra226, Th232 and Po210 in both the fly ash and bottom ash (except Po210 in the bottom ash) was demonstrated by the following mathematical equation: . This equation may be used as a good indication in obtaining an estimate in determining the enrichment of the mentioned radionuclides in coal combustion products such as fly ash and bottom ash.

AIM: To investigate whether an endoscopy-based management could prevent the long-term risk of postoperative ***: From the pathology department database, we retrospectively retrieved the data of all the patients operated on for Crohn’s disease (CD) in our center (1986-2015). Endoscopy-based management was defined as systematic postoperative colonoscopy (median time after surgery = 9.5 mo) in patients with no clinical postoperative recurrence at the time of ***: From 205 patients who underwent surgery, 161 patients (follow-up > 6 mo) were included. Endoscopic postoperative recurrence occurred in 67.6%, 79.7%, and 95.5% of the patients, respectively 5, 10 and 20 years after surgery. The rate of clinical postoperative recurrence was 61.4%, 75.9%, and 92.5% at 5, 10 and 20 years, respectively. The rate of surgical postoperative recurrence was 19.0%, 38.9% and 64.7%, respectively, 5, 10 and 20 years after surgery. In multivariate analysis, previous intestinal resection, prior exposure to anti-TNF therapy before surgery, and fistulizing phenotype (B3) were postoperative risk factors. Previous perianal abscess/fistula (other perianal lesions excluded), were predictive of only symptomatic recurrence. In multivariate analysis, an endoscopy-based management (n = 49/161) prevented clinical (HR = 0.4, 95%CI: 0.25-0.66, P < 0.001) and surgical postoperative recurrence (HR = 0.30, 95%CI: 0.13-0.70, P = 0.006).CONCLUSION: Endoscopy-based management should be recommended in all CD patients within the first year after surgery as it highly decreases the long-term risk of clinical recurrence and reoperation.

Factors released by surrounding cells such as cancer-associated mesenchymal stromal cells(CA-MSCs)are involved in tumor progression and *** this study,we characterize the mechanisms by which naYve mesenchymal stromal cells(MSCs)can acquire a CA-MSCs *** tumor cells trigger the transformation of MSCs to CA-MSCs by expressing pro-tumoral genes implicated in the chemoresistance of cancer cells,resulting in the secretion of high levels of CXC chemokine receptors 1 and 2(CXCR1/2)ligands such as chemokine(C-X-C motif)ligand 1(CXCL1),CXCL2,and interleukin 8(IL-8).CXCR1/2 ligands can also inhibit the immune response against ovarian tumor ***,through their released factors,CA-MSCs promote the differentiation of monocytes towards M2 macrophages,which favors tumor *** CXCR1/2 receptors are inhibited,these CA-MSC-activated macrophages lose their M2 properties and acquire an anti-tumoral *** ex vivo and in vivo,we used a CXCR1/2 inhibitor to sensitize ovarian tumor cells to carboplatin and circumvent the pro-tumoral effects of *** high concentrations of CXCR1/2 ligands in patients*blood are associated with chemoresistance,CXCR1/2 inhibition could be a potential therapeutic strategy to revert carboplatin resistance.
