moths,pheromone receptors(PRs)are crucial for intraspecific sexual communication between males and females.Moth PRs are considered as an ideal model for studying the evolution of insect PRs,and a large number of PRs have been identified and functionally characterized in different moth species.Moth PRs were initially thought to fall into a single monophyletic clade in the odorant receptor(OR)family,but recent studies have shown that ORs in another lineage also bind type-I sex pheromones,which indicates that type-I PRs have multiple independent origins in the Lepidoptera.In this study,we investigated whether ORs of the pest moth Spodoptera frugiperda belonging to clades closely related to this novel PR lineage may also have the capacity to bind type-I pheromones and serve as male PRs.Among the 7 ORs tested,only 1(SfruOR23)exhibited a male-biased expression pattern.Importantly,in vitro functional characterization showed that SfruOR23 could bind several type-I sex pheromone compounds with Z-9-tetradecenal(Z9-14:Ald),a minor component found in female sex pheromone glands,as the optimal ligand.In addition,SfruOR23 also showed weak responses to plant volatile organic compounds.Altogether,we characterized an S.frugiperda PR positioned in a lineage closely related to the novel PR clade,indicating that the type-I PR lineage can be extended in moths.

Factors associated with decreased compliance after on-site extracorporeal membrane oxygenation cannulation for acute respiratory distress syndrome:A retrospective,observational cohort study

Background Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation(ECMO)for acute respiratory distress syndrome(ARDS)is systematically associated with decreased respiratory system compliance(CRS).It remains unclear whether transportation to the referral ECMO center,changes in ventilatory mode or settings to achieve ultra-protective ventilation,or the natural evolution of ARDS drives this change in respiratory mechanics.Herein,we assessed the precise moment when CRS decreases after ECMO cannulation and identified factors associated with decreased CRS.Methods To rule out the effect of transportation and the different modes of ventilation on CRS,we conducted a retrospective,single-center,observational cohort study from January 2013 to May 2020,on 22 patients with severe ARDS requiring on-site ECMO and ventilated in pressure-controlled mode to achieve ultra-protective ventilation.CRS was assessed at different time points ranging from 12 h before ECMO cannulation to 72 h after ECMO cannulation.The primary outcome was the relative change in CRS between 3 h before and 3 h after ECMO cannulation.The secondary outcomes included variables associated with the relative changes in CRS within the first 3 h after ECMO cannulation and the relative changes in CRS at each time point.Results CRS decreased within the first 3 h after ECMO cannulation(−28.3%,95%confidence interval[CI]:−38.8 to−17.9,P<0.001),while the decrease was mild before and after these first 3 h after ECMO cannulation.To achieve ultra-protective ventilation,respiratory rate decreased in the mean by–13 breaths/min(95%CI:−15 to−11)and driving pressure by−8.3 cmH2O(95%CI:−11.2 to−5.3),resulting in decreased tidal volume by−3.3 mL/kg of predicted body weight(95%CI:−3.9 to−2.6)as compared to before ECMO cannulation(P<0.001 for all).Plateau pressure reduction,driving pressure reduction,and tidal volume reduction were significantly associated with decreased CRS after ECMO cannulation,whereas neither respiratory rate,positive end-expiratory pressure,inspired fraction of oxygen,fluid balance

The tectonics and mineral systems of Proterozoic Western Australia:Relationships with supercontinents and global secular change

The cratonisation of Western Australia during the Proterozoic overlapped with several key events in the evolution of Earth. These include global oxidation events and glaciations, as well as the assembly,accretionary growth, and breakup of the supercontinents Columbia and Rodinia, culminating in the assembly of Gondwana. Globally, Proterozoic mineral systems evolved in response to the coupled evolution of the atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere and lithosphere. Consequently, mineral deposits form preferentially in certain times, but they also require a favourable tectonic setting. For Western Australia a distinct plate-margin mineralisation trend is associated with Columbia, whereas an intraplate mineralisation trend is associated with Rodinia and Gondwana, each with associated deposit types. We compare the current Proterozoic record of ore deposits in Western Australia to the estimated likelihood of oredeposit formation. Overall likelihood is estimated with a simple matrix-based approach that considers two components: The "global secular likelihood" and the "tectonic setting likelihood". This comparative study shows that at least for the studied ore-deposit types, deposits within Western Australia developed at times, and in tectonic settings compatible with global databases. Nevertheless, several deposit types are either absent or poorly-represented relative to the overall likelihood models. Insufficient exploration may partly explain this, but a genuine lack of deposits is also suggested for some deposit types. This may relate either to systemic inadequacies that inhibited ore-deposit formation, or to poor preservation. The systematic understanding on the record of Western Australia helps to understand mineralisation processes within Western Australia and its past connections in Columbia, Rodinia and Gondwana and aids to identify regions of high exploration potential.

Estimating Compositions and Nutritional Values of Seed Mixes Based on Vision Transformers

The cultivation of seed mixtures for local pastures is a traditional mixed cropping technique of cereals and legumes for producing,at a low production cost,a balanced animal feed in energy and protein in livestock systems.By considerably improving the autonomy and safety of agricultural systems,as well as reducing their impact on the environment,it is a type of crop that responds favorably to both the evolution of the European regulations on the use of phytosanitary products and the expectations of consumers who wish to increase their consumption of organic products.However,farmers find it difficult to adopt it because cereals and legumes do not ripen synchronously and the harvested seeds are heterogeneous,making it more difficult to assess their nutritional value.Many efforts therefore remain to be made to acquire and aggregate technical and economical references to evaluate to what extent the cultivation of seed mixtures could positively contribute to securing and reducing the costs of herd feeding.The work presented in this paper proposes new Artificial Intelligence techniques that could be transferred to an online or smartphone application to automatically estimate the nutritional value of harvested seed mixes to help farmers better manage the yield and thus engage them to promote and contribute to a better knowledge of this type of cultivation.For this purpose,an original open image dataset has been built containing 4,749 images of seed mixes,covering 11 seed varieties,with which 2 types of recent deep learning models have been trained.The results highlight the potential of this method and show that the best-performing model is a recent state-of-the-art vision transformer pre-trained with self-supervision(Bidirectional Encoder representation from Image Transformer).It allows an estimation of the nutritional value of seed mixtures with a coefficient of determination R^(2)score of 0.91,which demonstrates the interest of this type of approach,for its possible use on a large scale.

In this paper we study a low frequency model for acoustic propagation in a 2D flow duct.For some Mach profile flow,we are able to give a well-posedness theorem.Its proof relies on a quasi-explicit expression of the solution which provides us an efficient numerical method.We give and comment numerical results for particular linear,tangent and quadratic profiles.Finally,we give a numerical validation of our asymptotic model.

Red blood cells(RBCs)can act as carriers for therapeutic agents and can substantially improve the safety,pharmacokinetics,and pharmacodynamics of many drugs.Maintaining RBCs integrity and lifespan is important for the efficacy of RBCs as drug carrier.We investigated the impact of drug encapsulation by hypotonic dialysis on RBCs physiology and integrity.Several parameters were compared between processed RBCs loaded with l-asparaginase(“eryaspase”),processed RBCs without drug and non-processed RBCs.Processed RBCs were less hydrated and displayed a reduction of intracellular content.We observed a change in the metabolomic but not in the proteomic profile of processed RBCs.Encapsulation process caused moderate morphological changes and was accompanied by an increase of RBCs-derived Extracellular Vesicles release.Despite a decrease in deformability,processed RBCs were not mechanically retained in a spleen-mimicking device and had increased surface-to-volume ratio and osmotic resistance.Processed RBCs half-life was not significantly affected in a mouse model and our previous phase 1 clinical study showed that encapsulation of asparaginase in RBCs prolonged its in vivo half-life compared to free forms.Our study demonstrated that encapsulation by hypotonic dialysis may affect certain characteristics of RBCs but does not significantly affect the in vivo longevity of RBCs or their drug carrier function.

This work concerns multiple-scattering problems for time-harmonic equations in a reference genericmedia.We consider scatterers that can be sources,obstacles or compact perturbations of the reference media.Our aim is to restrict the computational domain to small compact domains containing the scatterers.We use Robin-to-Robin(RtR)operators(in the most general case)to express boundary conditions for the interior problem.We show that one can always factorize the RtR map using only operators defined using single-scatterer problems.This factorization is based on a decomposition of the diffracted field,on thewhole domainwhere it is defined.Assuming that there exists a good method for solving single-scatterer problems,it then gives a convenient way to compute RtR maps for a random number of scatterers.

Mirizzi syndrome, a rare complication of gallstones, is defined by obstruction of the main bile duct. This obstruction may worsen and thus result in cholecystobiliary fistula. Surgical management of Mirizzi syndrome is complicated by the presence of inflamed tissue around the hepatic pedicle, making it impossible to distinguish between the main bile duct and the gallbladder. The surgeon＇s first task is to perform subtotal cholecystotomy（from the fundus of the gallbladder to the neck） without trying to locate the cystic duct. In a second step, the gallstones are extracted and the main bile duct is then repaired. In most cases, a T-tube is used to drain the main bile duct, and abdominal drainage is left in place（in case a bile fistula forms）. This study concluded that preoperative drainage of the main bile duct in the treatment of Mirizzi syndrome types II and III is feasible and might help to decrease the postoperative complication rate.
