A total of 1,101 heads were used to improve the selection of superior cows in Gangwon regional hanwoo. Characteristics of each cow were analyzed using ultrasound evaluation and trace of reproductive potential. A comparison of live carcass traits classified by parity was analyzed in all characteristics. The results of the comparison showed all characteristic increased rapidly after the 2nd parity, and decreased after the 4th parity (P hanwoo cows. In the analysis, frequency of fertilization failure appeared 0.9 times at rump fat thickness below 5 mm. However, it is higher than average above 5 mm. The result of the study will be used to improve cows, select optimum semen, as well as contribute to the improvement of farms income.

In addition to their value as cereal grains, wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and triticale (× Triticosecale Wittmack) are important cool-season annual forages and cover crops. Yearling steer (Bos taurus) performance was compared in the spring following autumn establishment as for age cover crops after soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] grain harvest. Replicated pastures (0.4 ha) were no-till seeded in three consecutive years into soybean stubble in autumn, fertilized, and grazed the following spring near Ithaca, NE, USA. Each pasture (n = 3) was continuously stocked in spring with four yearling steers (380 ± 38 kg) for 17, 32, and 28 d in 2005, 2006, and 2007, respectively. In 2005, average daily gain (ADG) for steers grazing triticale exceeded the ADG for wheat by 0.31 kghd-1d-1. In 2006, wheat ADG exceeded that for triticale by 0.12 kghd-1d-1. In 2007, steers grazing wheat lost weight, while steers grazing triticale gained 0.20 kghd-1d-1. Based on the 3-year average animal gains valued at $1.32 kg-1, mean net return ($ ha-1 yr-1) was $62.15 for triticale and $22.55 for wheat. Since these grazed cover crops provide ecosystem services in addition to forage, grazing could be viewed as a mechanism for recovering costs and adds additional value to the system. Based on this 3-year grazing trial, triticale was superior to wheat and likely will provide the most stable beef yearling performance across years with variable weather for the western Cornbelt USA.

One of the major challenges faced by the biomedical industry is the development of robust synthetic surfaces that can resist bacterial colonization. Much inspiration has been drawn recently from naturally occurring mechano-bactericidal surfaces such as the wings of cicada(Psaltoda claripennis) and dragonfly(Diplacodes bipunctata) species in fabricating their synthetic analogs. However,the bactericidal activity of nanostructured surfaces is observed in a particular range of parameters reflecting the geometry of nanostructures and surface wettability. Here,several of the nanometer-scale characteristics of black silicon(bSi) surfaces including the density and height of the nanopillars that have the potential to influence the bactericidal efficiency of these nanostructured surfaces have been investigated. The results provide important evidence that minor variations in the nanoarchitecture of substrata can substantially alter their performance as bactericidal surfaces.

Comparison of Behavioral Characteristics between Korean Native Chickens and Commercial Broilers

Commercial broilers (CB) have been generally reared in Korea; however, Korean native chicken (KNC) is also bred for meat production. This study was performed to evaluate the behavioral characteristics of Korean native chickens (han-hyup) and commercial broilers (Ross 308). In the study, KNC and CB were separately housed in 4 pens (30 birds/pen), so there were two replicates for each treatment. Chickens were observed by video recording throughout the 8 weeks growth period for 12 hours each day. The time spent (standing, sitting, and walking) and frequencies (drinking, feeding, preening, dust-bathing, flapping, aggressive pecking, and ground pecking) of chicken’s behavior were evaluated. Behavior was compared between the earlier period (1 to 4 weeks) and the later one (5 to 8 weeks) to know the changes in each behavior as they matured. Results showed that more time was spent on standing by KNC than CB. On the contrary, time spent for sitting behavior was less in KNC. The frequencies of most behaviors in KNC were higher than CB in the earlier period except feeding and dust-bathing. The greatest decreasing behavior as they matured was walking in both treatments, and a large number of commercial broilers did not walk, but instead rested as days passed. Feeding behavior of CB was more frequent in the earlier stage, but gradually reversed in the later period. The active behaviors such as feeding, preening, pecking, flapping and aggressive pecking in the KNC group were higher than the CB group, declining as time passed in both treatments; except dust-bathing that showed opposite pattern. These results were showed that KNC are much more active compared to CB, especially for walking, preening and pecking behavior. This may conclude that they may have fewer tendencies to develop potential health problems like dermatitis or even disease like sudden death syndrome.

AIM: To investigate the influence of neutrophil adhesion molecule blockade with monoclonal antibody (MoAb CD11b) and E. coli lipopolysaccharide (LPS)administration on experimental acute pancreatitis (AP).METHODS: AP was induced by four ip injections of cerulein (Cn) at 1-h intervals. MoAb CD 11b and LPS were administered at the beginning of the ***: The neutrophil count and chemiluminescence were diminished at the beginning of AP. The oxidative stress parameters were found within the pancreatic gland. MoAb CD 11b used for AP resulted in a significant reduction of pancreatic infiltration and pancreatitis oxidative stress parameters. Serum interleukin-6 (IL-6)was not detected in AP animals, whereas high serum IL-6 concentration was noted only in animals receiving ***: Neutrophils are involved in pancreatic damage in the early stage of AP. Neutrophil infiltration reduction protects the pancreatic gland from destruction during AP. LPS does not change the early course of Cn pancreatitis in rats.
