We demonstrate that the methodology of frequency-resolved optical gating(FROG) is applicable to time-resolved reflection spectroscopy of a plasma mirror in the vacuum-ultraviolet(VUV) region. Our recent study [R. itakura et al. Opt. Express 23, 10914(2015)] has shown that a VUV waveform can be retrieved from a VUV reflection spectrogram of a plasma mirror formed on a fused silica(FS) surface by irradiation with an intense femtosecond laser pulse. Simultaneously, the increase in the reflectivity with respect to the Fresnel reflection of the unexcited FS surface can be obtained as a time-dependent reflectivity of the plasma mirror. In this study, we update the FROG analysis procedure using the least-square generalized projections algorithm. This procedure can reach convergence much faster than the previous one and has no aliasing problem. It is demonstrated that a significantly chirped VUV pulse as long as 1 ps can be precisely characterized.

Postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF) is one of the most severe complications after pancreatic surgeries. POPF develops as a consequence of pancreatic juice leakage from a surgically exfoliated surface and/or anastomotic stump, which sometimes cause intraperitoneal abscesses and subsequent lethal hemorrhage. In recent years, various surgical and perioperative attempts have been examined to reduce the incidence of POPF. We reviewed several well-designed studies addressing POPF-related factors, such as reconstruction methods, anastomotic techniques, stent usage, prophylactic intra-abdominal drainage, and somatostatin analogs, after pancreaticoduodenectomy and distal pancreatectomy, and we assessed the current status of POPF. In addition, we also discussed the current status of POPF in minimally invasive surgeries, laparoscopic surgeries, and robotic surgeries.

This paper proposes an analytical model to describe rock drilling processes using drag bits and rotary drills, and to induce relations among rock properties, bit shapes, and drilling parameters (rotary speed, thrust, torque, and stroke). In this model, a drilling process is divided into successive cycles. Each cycle includes two motions: feed and cutting. According to this model, drilling torque includes four components generated from cutting, friction, feed, and idle running respectively, the first three items are all proportional to the UCS (uniaxial compressive strength) when the penetration rate is constant. Laboratory tests verified the correctness and effectiveness of the proposed model qualitatively. Especially, the influence of friction on the flank face and the idle running was confirmed. Field experiments were performed. The results showed good correlation between the torque, penetration rate, and UCS. The proposed model and equations engender the possibility of eliminating useless components of cutting forces when investigating the relation between mechanical data and physical properties of rocks.

Eu3+-doped gadolinium oxyhydroxide Gd1-xEuxOOH crystals were synthesized by the flux method. The X-ray diffraction data for the crystals were well refined assuming a monoclinic structure with the P21/m space group. Gd1-xEuxOOH (x ≤ 0.2) crystals showed strong red emission, and the highest fluorescence quantum yield (Φf) was 0.27, obtained for x = 0.10. Φf decreased rapidly as the Eu3+ content x increased above 0.2, owing to concentration quenching. Analysis with a percolation model indicated three-dimensional energy transfer between the Eu3+ ions.

Amyloid-β42 (Aβ42) accumulates within senileplaque, a pathological hall mark of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Our previous reports showed that the monoclonal antibodies 37-11 and 77-3 react with conformational epitopes on the surface of the soluble aggregates of Aβ42 and that sandwich ELISA using these two monoclonal antibodies yields high reactivity to detect soluble aggregates of Aβ42. Here, the reactivity of the sandwich ELISA was shown to increase in the presence of 50 μM Cu2+. However, the addition of Cu2+ had only a small effect on the reactivity of a direct ELISA using antibody 37-11 or 77-3, suggesting that Cu2+ has a small effect on the number of epitopes on the surface of the aggregates. Atomic force microscopy images showed that larger aggregates were formed in the presence of Cu2+, as shown in the other reports. Cu2+ may gather the aggregates with distinct epitopes recognized by antibodies 37-11 and 77-3, leading to increased signal intensity of the sandwich ELISA.

Determination of mechanical properties of thin films, such as the Young’s modulus, is of fundament importance when the films are used for coating or for MEMS materials. It is known that a thin film has special mechanical properties, which is different from the bulk value of the same material. Plasma-polymerized allylamine （PPAA） films have attracted considerable attention for applications as substrates for immobilizing biomaterials [1], dielectrics for field effect transistors [2], and coatings for humidity sensors by using the swelling property of the material [3]. It is necessarily to evaluate the mechanical properties of PPAA films, since these devices are used as structural parts of micro elector-mechanical systems. We want to find out the Young’s modulus for a swelling thin film by tuning the humidity content. To clarify the swelling mechanism in micro cantilever sensor （MCS） system, we have developed a method to determine mechanical properties of very thin films with thickness less than 100 nm. In this paper we have measured a mechanical property of thin film, in terms of Young’s modulus. For a bulk material Young’s modulus terminology is used, we call it effective Young’s modulus for a thin film.

AIM:To test whether in vitro incubation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) with interferon (IFN) could efficiently decrease hepatitis C virus-RNA (HCV-RNA) amount and to analyze whether this effect was associated with clinical response to IFN.METHODS:Twenty-seven patients with histologically proven chronic hepatitis C were given intravenous administration of 6 million units (MU) IFN-β daily for 6 weeks followed by three times weekly for 20 weeks. PBMC collected before IFN therapy were incubated with IFN-β and HCV-RNA in PMBC was semi-quantitatively determined.RESULTS: Twenty-five patients completed IFN therapy.Eight patients (32%) had sustained loss of serum HCV-RNA with normal serum ALT levels after IFN therapy (complete responders).HCV-RNA in PBMC was detected in all patients,whereas it was not detected in PBMC from healthy subjects.In vitro administration of IFN-β decreased the amount of HCV-RNA in PMBC in 18 patients (72%). Eight of these patients obtained complete response. On the other hand,none of the patients whose HCV-RNA in PBMC did not decrease by IFN-β was complete responders. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that the decrease of HCV-RNA amount in PBMC by IFN-β was the only independent predictor for complete response (P<0.05).CONCLUSION:The effect of in vitro IFN-β on HCV in PBMC reflects clinical response and would be taken into account as a predictive marker of IFN therapy for chronic hepatitis C.
