Morphometric and meristic variation in two congeneric archer fishes Toxotes chatareus (Hamilton 1822) and Toxotes jaculatrix (Pallas 1767) inhabiting Malaysian coastal waters

A simple yet useful criterion based on external markings and/or number of dorsal spines is currently used to differentiate two congeneric archer fish species Toxotes chatareus and Toxotes *** we investigate other morphometric and meristic characters that can also be used to differentiate these two *** component and/or discriminant functions revealed that meristic characters were highly correlated with pectoral fin ray count,number of lateral line scales,as well as number of anal fin *** results indicate that *** can be distinguished from *** by having a greater number of lateral line scales,a lower number of pectoral fin rays,and a higher number of anal fin *** contrast,morphometric discriminant analyses gave relatively low distinction:76.1% of fish were ascribed to the correct species *** observed morphometric differences came from the dorsal and anal spines lengths,with *** having shorter dorsal and longer anal spines than ***,meristic traits were more useful than morphometrics in differentiating the two species;nevertheless,meristics and morphometrics together provide information about the morphological differentiation between these two closely related archer fishes.

Intensity of parasitic infestation in silver carp,Hypophthalmichthys molitrix

Silver carp,Hypopthalmichthys molitrix is one of the most economically valuable fish species in ***,its production is often hindered by parasite-induced *** present study reports the intensity of parasitic infestation in 216 specimens of *** collected from different fish markets in Rajshahi City,*** different parasite species (Trichodina pediculatus,Dactylogyrus vastator,Ichthyophthirius multifilis,gyrodactylus elegans,Lernaea sp.,Apiosoma sp.,Myxobolus rohitae,Camallanus ophiocephali,and Pallisentis ophiocephali) were recovered from the gill,skin,stomach,and intestine of host *** highest level of infection was observed for host skin,while lower levels were observed for host gill,stomach,and *** results also revealed that the intensity of parasite infection in different organs of *** varied with the *** particular,the highest levels of infection were recorded during the winter period (November-February),when fish are most susceptible to *** findings of the study will help in the management and conservation of ***.

研究目的:假腮的功能早已引起科学家兴趣,但还有待阐明。本文通过研究硬骨鱼类品种虹鳟鱼(Oncorhynchus mykiss)的假腮碳酸酐酶的免疫定位,来探讨假腮碳酸酐酶的生理功能。研究方法:免疫组织化学染色技术。重要结论:免疫组化结果显示碳酸酐酶分布在假腮细胞中,更精确地说是在其细胞顶端分布。细胞基底端、管状系统、毛细血管和柱细胞均无免疫染色。免疫细胞化学定位进一步验证了这些结果,并显示一部分是细胞质碳酸酐酶,其余的与细胞膜结构连接。此外,腔隙层未显示出免疫过氧化物酶的活性。本研究揭示了假腮碳酸酐酶的功能与细胞外介质有关,碳酸酐酶能干预传入神经纤维刺激机制。

Improving the hydrostability of zeolitic imidazolate framework coatings using a facile silk fibroin protein modification method

Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks(ZIFs)are an important subclass of metal-organic frameworks(MOFs)with zeolite-type topology,which can be fabricated under ambient synthesis ***,the applications of ZIFs are commonly limited due to the weak hydrostability of their metal–ligand coordination bonds,particularly under humid and aqueous *** this work,as an example,the hydrolysis behaviours of ZIF-L with a special focus on ZIF-L coatings were tested at aqueous conditions with a wide range of pHs to systematically study and fundamentally understand their structural stability and degradation *** ZIF-L powder and ZIF-L coatings were severely damaged after only 24 h in aqueous ***,the ZIF-L coatings showed two distinct hydrolyzation pathways regardless of pH conditions,exhibiting either a ring-shaped etching or unfolding *** the ZIF-L powders were hydrolyzed almost identically across all pH *** this new understanding,a facile silk fibroin(SF)protein modification method was developed to enhance the hydrostability of ZIF-L coatings in aqueous *** effect of protein concentration on surface coating was systemically ***-L coating retained its surface morphology after soaking in water and demonstrated switchable super wetting properties and superior separation performance for oil/water *** a result,the quick SF protein modification significantly enhanced the stability of ZIF-L coatings under various pHs,while retaining their switchable wetting property and excellent separation performance.

The paper explores a framework combining remote sensing and gIS-cellular automata(CA)concepts aimed at improving the modeling of unauthorized land use *** sensing data have been used in urban modeling and analysis,the use of high-resolution remote sensing data in assessing unauthorized development is quite *** work has demonstrated systematic combination utilization of geospatial analyses tools to acquire a new level of information to enable urban modeling and sprawl analysis in assisting urban sustainable *** this study,Kuantan city,Malaysia was selected in simulation of the unauthorized land use with CA concept for a period of 15 years(20002015),with main input time-series land use observation from 1995 to *** 2000 and 2005 land use input was also used as calibrated and test assessment of the *** results show excellent agreement between in-situ changes of the unauthorized land use classes and the corresponding simulated classes within the same *** conclusion,CA model can lead to new levels of understanding of how urban areas grow and change as in view of digital earth aspiration.

3-D visualizations of coastal bathymetry by utilization of airborne TOPSAR polarized data

Multi-frequency C and L bands in the TOPSAR data have been utilized to reconstruct three-dimensional(3-D)bathymetry *** main objective of this study is to utilize fuzzy arithmetic to reduce the errors arising from speckle in synthetic aperture radar(SAR)data when constructing ocean bathymetry from polarized SAR *** doing so,two 3-D surface models,the Volterra algorithm and a fuzzy B-spline(FBS)algorithm,which construct a global topological structure between the data points,were used to support an approximation to the real *** algorithm was used to express the non-linearity of TOPSAR data intensity gradient based on the action balance equation(ABC).In this context,a first-order kernel of Volterra algorithm was used to express ABC *** inverse of Volterra algorithm then performed to simulate 2-D current velocities from CVV and LHH ***,the 2-D continuity equation then used to estimate the water *** order to reconstruct 3-D bathymetry pattern,the FBS has been performed to water depth information which was estimated from 2-D continuity *** best reconstruction of coastal bathymetry of the test site in Kuala Terengganu,Malaysia,was obtained with polarized L and C bands SAR acquired with HH and VV polarizations,*** 10 m spatial resolution of TOPSAR data,bias of0.004 m,the standard error mean of 0.023 m,r2 value of 0.95,and 90%confidence intervals in depth determination was obtained with LHH band.

Ontogenetic changes in feeding and food preferences of the dog conch Laevistrombus canarium Linnaeus 1758 (Mollusca： gastropoda) from Merambong shoal, Malaysia

Laevistrombus canarium is one of the marine gastropod mollusks that have high commercial value,particularly in the aquaculture sector in *** study was conducted to determine the feeding and food items of *** at dif ferent ontogenetic stages(juveniles,sub-adults and adults)from Merambong shoals,*** observations on feeding activity were conducted,followed by detailed laboratory analysis on the stomach ***-minutes observations on randomly selected individuals were conducted at the fi eld sampling site and their feeding activities were recorded with reference to age *** shell sizes from each ontogenetic stage were randomly collected and quickly anaesthetized with ice and preserved in 10%formalin before being transported to the laboratory for stomach content *** observations showed that *** mainly grazed on epiphytes occurring on seagrass(46.67%),followed by sediment surface(40%)and epiphytes occurring on macroalgae(13.33%).Stomach content analyses showed a signifi cant dif ference(Pgastro-somatic index(gasi)between the juveniles(0.39±0.05),sub-adults(0.68±0.09)and adults(0.70±0.05)(Pgrass and macroalgae fragments,sand particles and shell *** Index of Relative Importance(%IRI)indicates three main types of food dominated the three ontogenetic stages namely diatoms,sand particles and ***,no signifi cant diff erence(P>0.05)was detected between the three main food items(diatoms,sand particles and detritus)among the ontogenetic ***,feeding activity revealed the role of the dog conch in the marine food ***,classifi cation of the types of food consumed by *** through stomach content analysis determines the particular position of the gastropod in the food *** studies are needed to provide a better insight between trophic relationships of *** with marine
