SCIENCE OF WINNING SOCCER:EMERGENT PATTERN-FORMING DYNAMICS IN ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL

Quantitative analysis is increasingly being used in team sports to better understand performance in these stylized,delineated,complex social ***,the authors provide a first step toward understanding the pattern-forming dynamics that emerge from collective offensive and defensive behavior in team *** authors propose a novel method of analysis that captures how teams occupy sub-areas of the field as the ball changes *** authors use this method to analyze a game of association football(soccer) based upon a hypothesis that local player numerical dominance is key to defensive stability and offensive *** authors find that the teams consistently allocated more players than their opponents in sub-areas of play closer to their own *** is consistent with a predominantly defensive strategy intended to prevent yielding even a single *** authors also find differences between the two teams' strategies:while both adopted the same distribution of defensive,midfield,and attacking players(a 4:3:3 system of play),one team was significantly more effective in maintaining both defensive and offensive numerical dominance for defensive stability and offensive *** team indeed won the match with an advantage of one goal(2 to 1) but the analysis shows the advantage in play was more pervasive than the single goal victory would *** proposed focus on the local dynamics of team collective behavior is distinct from the traditional focus on individual player *** supports a broader view in which specific player abilities contribute within the context of the dynamics of multiplayer team coordination and coaching *** applying this complex system analysis to association football,the authors can understand how players' and teams' strategies result in successful and unsuccessful relationships between teammates and opponents in the area of play.

An Enhanced Physically Based Scour Model for Considering Jet Air Entrainment

Based on systematic experiments on the influence of air entrainment on rock block stability in plunge pools impacted by high-velocity jets,this study presents adaptations of a physically based scour *** modifications regarding jet aeration are implemented in the Comprehensive Scour Model(CSM),allowing it to reproduce the physical-mechanical processes involved in scour formation concerning the three phases;namely,water,rock,and *** enhanced method considers the reduction of momentum of an aerated jet as well as the decrease of energy dissipation in the jet diffusive shear layer,both resulting from the entrainment of air *** ejection from the rock mass depends on a combination of the aerated time-averaged pressure coefficient and the modified maximum dynamic impulsion coefficient,which was found to be a constant value of 0.2 for high-velocity jets in deep *** modified model is applied to the case of the observed scour hole at the Kariba Dam,with good agreement.

Dietary inclusion of multispecies probiotics to reduce the severity of post-weaning diarrhea caused by Escherichia coli F18+ in pigs

We report new heterogeneous organocatalyst based on silica hybrid supported N-heterocyclic carbene(NHC-)*** organocatalyst is formed from an imidazolium iodide based ionosilica material,followed by iodide/acetate anion *** imidazolium acetate generates the organocatalytic carbene via partial deprotonation of the imidazolium ring in *** monitored via EDX,solid state NMR and ion chromatography measurements,the iodide/acetate exchange involving the imidazolium ionosilica material took place only in small *** the fact that the exchanged material contains only a very small amount of acetate,we observed good catalytic activity and recyclability in cyanosilylation reactions of ketones with trimethylsilyl *** versatility of the catalyst was highlighted via reaction with several substrates,yielding the corresponding cyanohydrins in good *** recycling experiments,the material showed decreasing catalytic activity starting from the third reaction cycle,but high catalytic activity can be regenerated via another acetate *** work is important as it highlights the possibility to combine carbene chemistry and silica,which are antagonistic at a first *** show that imidazolium acetate based ionosilicas are therefore heterogeneous'proto-carbenes',and that there is no need to form strongly basic silica supported NHCs to obtain heterogeneous *** work therefore opens the route towards heterogeneous and re-usable NHC-organocatalysts from supported ionic liquid imidazolium acetates.

Russet Sparrows spot alien chicks from their nests

Background: In coevolutionary interactions between brood parasites and their hosts, host parents are under strong selection to evolve defenses against parasitism. Egg rejection is an efficient and common defense against parasitism, although some apparently suitable hosts do not reject cuckoo ***: Sparrows Ploceidae are widespread throughout the Old World, and they have a suitable diet for rearing cuckoos, but still they are rarely exploited by brood parasites. To solve such puzzle, we conducted artificial parasitism and cross-fostering experiments in Russet Sparrow(Passer cinnamomeus).Results: The present study showed that Russet Sparrows have no egg recognition ability, but recognize their own nestlings and eject alien chicks or starve them to death. They may use visual cues in chick recognition, although they accept sister species Tree Sparrow(Passer montanus).Conclusions: By rejecting nestlings of foreign species, Russet Sparrows have succeeded to escape from the brood parasitism by cuckoos and other parasites. Our studies shed light on the puzzle why some species are not utilized by cuckoo parasites as hosts.

Clostridioides difficile(***)is the most common pathogen causing health care-associated *** TcdA and TcdB have been shown to activate enteric neurons;however,what population of these cells is more profoundly influenced and the mechanism underlying these effects remain *** To characterize a specific population of TcdA-affected myenteric neurons and investigate the role of the P2X7 receptor in TcdA-induced ileal inflammation,cell death,and the changes in the enteric nervous system in *** Swiss mice were used to model TcdA-induced ileitis in ileal loops exposed to TcdA(50μg/Loop)for 4 *** investigate the role of the P2X7 receptor,Brilliant Blue G(50 mg/kg,i.p.),which is a nonspecific P2X7 receptor antagonist,or A438079(0.7μg/mouse,i.p.),which is a competitive P2X7 receptor antagonist,were injected one hour prior to TcdA *** samples were collected to analyze the expression of the P2X7 receptor(by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction and immunohistochemistry),the population of myenteric enteric neurons(immunofluorescence),histological damage,intestinal inflammation,cell death(terminal deoxynucleotidyltransferasemediated dUTP-biotin nick end labeling),neuronal loss,and S100B synthesis(immunohistochemistry).RESULTS TcdA upregulated(P<0.05)the expression of the P2X7 receptor gene in the ileal tissues,increasing the level of this receptor in myenteric neurons compared to that in control *** with the control mice indicated that TcdA promoted(P<0.05)the loss of myenteric calretinin+(Calr)and choline acetyltransferase+neurons and increased the number of nitrergic+and Calr+neurons expressing the P2X7 *** of the P2X7 receptor decreased TcdAinduced intestinal damage,cytokine release[interleukin(IL)-1β,IL-6,IL-8,and tumor necrosis factor-α],cell death,enteric neuron loss,and S100B synthesis in the mouse *** Our findings demonstrated that TcdA induced the upregulation of the P

The complex systems approach offers an opportunity to replace the extant pre-dominant mechanistic view on sport-related *** emphasis on the environment-system relationship,the applications of complexity principles,and the use of nonlinear dynamics mathematical tools propose a deep change in sport *** dynamics,ecological dynamics,and network approaches have been successfully applied to the study of different sport-related behaviors,from movement patterns that emerge at different scales constrained by specific sport contexts to game *** benefit from the use of such approaches in the understanding of technical,tactical,or physical conditioning aspects which change their meaning and dilute their *** creation of new learning and training strategies for teams and individual athletes is a main practical *** challenges for the future are investigating the influence of key control parameters in the nonlinear behavior of athlete-environment systems and the possible relatedness of the dynamics and constraints acting at different spatio-temporal scales in team *** sport-related phenomena can make useful contributions to a better understanding of complex systems and vice-versa.

Optimization for performance-based design under seismic demands, including social costs

Performance-based design in earthquake engineering is a structural optimization problem that has, as the objective, the determination of design parameters for the minimization of total costs, while at the same time satisfying minimum reliability levels for the specifi ed performance criteria. Total costs include those for construction and structural damage repairs, those associated with non-structural components and the social costs of economic losses, injuries and fatalities. This paper presents a general framework to approach this problem, using a numerical optimization strategy and incorporating the use of neural networks for the evaluation of dynamic responses and the reliability levels achieved for a given set of design parameters. The strategy is applied to an example of a three-story offi ce building. The results show the importance of considering the social costs, and the optimum failure probabilities when minimum reliability constraints are not taken into account.

Cereal Grains:Their Impacts on Health and Food Safety

Cereal grains can contribute to maintain health and prevent chronic diseases by supplying biologically active components. The exact mechanism of action of these components is not completely understood,but extensive evidence suggests the antioxidants that are present in the grains are the likely source of benefits. These activities or properties might protect against coronary heart disease and diabetes. The relationships of complex carbohydrates,whole grain products and the prevention of diseases,including type2 diabetes mellitus and coronary heart disease continue to challenge the scientific community. Though cereal grains contribute to a healthy diet there are some people that can not tolerate the proteins present in the grain. This can lead to food allergies and when severe can be diagnosed as celiac disease.
