Diversity and Morphometrics of Palm Weevils of the Genus Rhynchophorus in Maniema Province, Democratic Republic of Congo

An inventory of Rhynchophorus species was carried out to determine their diversity, biogeographical variability and morphometrics. A shotgun trapping method was used at nine sites in three districts over a four-month period, identifying three species: R. quadrangulus, R. phoenicis, R. ferrugineus and a probable variant of R. phoenicis. Of these species, R. phoenicis stands out as the most widespread palm weevil, while the probable variant of R. phoenicis is considered the rarest subspecies in the Maniema region. The color of the head and elytra is a criterion for distinguishing the different species of Rhynchophorus spp. Morphological criteria indicate that the probable subspecies of R. phoenicis is the largest palm weevil in the Maniema region and even globally. It is followed by R. quadrangulus and, by far, by R. phoenicis. The smallest palm weevil in Maniema is R. ferrugineus. Moreover, these criteria reveal that, for all three species identified, the female is generally larger than the male. This study has the merit of extending the distribution of R. ferrugineus from the Maghreb to the central East of the DRC, and highlighting a subspecies of R. phoenicis. Recognition of the sexes on the basis of the shape of the tip of the abdomen (oval in the male and flat in the female) is an additional contribution.

Introduction: Renal ischemia-reperfusion (IR) is responsible for injuries such as destruction or dysfunction of tubular epithelial cells with inflammatory reaction and oxidative stress. Several therapeutic methods have been tested to alleviate ischemia-perfusion injury, ranging from using anti-inflammatory drugs, antioxidants, and plants from traditional pharmacopeia to administering RNA interference. However, there is currently no effective therapeutic option available for the treatment of renal IR injury, other than supportive therapies such as renal replacement therapy or hydration. Objective: This present study aimed to evaluate the effect of Guiera senegalensis on renal ischemia reperfusion, a recognized plant for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Materials and Methods: Twenty-four (24) adult male Wistar rats were divided into four following groups: SLAM (subjected to a median laparotomy with simulated ischemia);GUIERRA (animals that received 250 mg/kg of guierra senegalensis orally, once a day, for 5 days, with simulated renal ischemia);IR (animals that underwent laparotomy followed by clamping of bilateral renal pedicles for 45 min and followed by reperfusion);GUIERRA + IR (animals given GUIERRA at the dosage of 250 mg/kg per day, for 5 days and then subjected to renal ischemia-reperfusion). Data analysis was performed by ANOVA, and a significance level of p Results: Compared with the I/R group, rats in the GUIERRA + IR group showed reduced histopathological damage scores (p Conclusion: The results of this preliminary work suggest that Guiera senegalensis decreases the degree of tissue damage in renal ischemia-reperfusion cases. This plant seems to be a promising therapeutic;further studies could help to precise the targets of its compounds on ischemia-reperfusion pathways.

A Systematic Review on the Comparison between Lumbar Disc Hernia Resection by Endoscopy and Microdiscectomy

Background: Surgical treatment of lumbar disc herniation is a widely debated topic, with several techniques available. Percutaneous endoscopic discectomy (PELD) has gained popularity due to its lower invasiveness compared to conventional techniques such as microdiscectomy/open lumbar microdiscectomy (OLMD)/tubular microdiscectomy (TMD). However, evidence on the effectiveness, recovery time and complications of these techniques is not yet clearly established. This systematic review aims to compare the preoperative and postoperative outcomes of both techniques. Methods: A comprehensive search was performed in databases including PubMed and Cochrane, following strict inclusion and exclusion criteria. Comparative studies and narrative reviews on PELD and OLMD/TMD published between 2019 and 2024 were included. Key outcomes considered were pre- and postoperative Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), hospitalization time, time to return to work, and postoperative complications. Results: The reviewed studies indicated that PELD is associated with a greater reduction in postoperative pain compared to OLMD/TMD, with a significant decrease in VAS, according to the study by Priola et al. (2019). The hospital stay was also shorter for patients undergoing PELD, averaging 2 days compared to OLMD/TMD. Furthermore, PELD favored a faster return to work and had a lower rate of postoperative complications, such as dural tears and reoperations, compared to OLMD/TMD. Conclusions: PELD demonstrates clear advantages over OLMD/TMD in terms of pain reduction, shorter hospital stay, faster return to work, and fewer postoperative complications. However, the implementation of this technique requires a significant learning curve, suggesting that its effectiveness may vary depending on the surgeon’s experience. PELD should be considered a preferred option in the resection of lumbar disc herniations, especially in patients seeking a quick and less invasive recovery.

This study combines the thermodynamic analysis of a polygeneration system along with the numerical modelling of the thermal behavior of geothermal reservoirs in Mexico to exploit their *** reservoir was modeled as a porous medium assuming a five-spot well configuration and local thermal *** heat conduction-convection along with the Laplace equations were solved to compute temperature distributions,the useful life and the optimum distance between injection-extraction *** predicted temperature and pressure of the geothermal fluid at the outlet of the reservoir were exploited in the polygeneration system consisting of:(1)a Rankine cycle,(2)an absorption refrigeration cycle,and(3)a heat *** developed approach allows calculating both the optimal distance between injection-extraction wells and the global(utilization)efficiency of six arrangements(each composed by a reservoir connected to a polygeneration system)by assuming that reservoirs have a lifespan of 30 *** also show that:(a)due to the low efficiency of the Rankine cycle,very little thermal energy is converted into electrical one;(b)not only the temperature and the size are important when evaluating the power production performance of reservoirs,but also the permeability plays a fundamental role;(c)the first law efficiency of the polygeneration system ranges from 41.9%to 43.7%;(d)the utilization efficiency of the six arrangements lies in the range between 25.8%and 31%.

An accurate scheme for determining the electronic factor of the electron self-exchange reaction in solution is presented in this paper. The used various activation parameters and slopes of potential energy surfaces are obtained in terms of an improved activation model and the accurate potential function determined from the vibrational spectroscopic and thermodynamic data. The coupling matrix elements are determined using numerical integral method over the perturbed double-zeta Slater type state functions. Theoretical results of electronic factor in this work are found in close agreement with those extracted from experimental rate constant data and to be less than unity. Results indicate that outer-sphere electron transfer reactions in solution involving hydrated transition metal ions are nonadiabatic in nature.

The photochemical reactions of azobenzene (AB) incorporated into different solvent-swollen Nafion membranes were investigated. The location of azobenzene in water-swollen Nafion membranes was different from that in methanol-swollen Nafion membranes, which was responsible for the different photochemical reactions of AB. In methanol-swollen Nafion membranes only transcis isomerization took place, while in water-swollen Nafion membranes photochemical cyclization of AB occurred after rapid transcis isomerization. The relation between the relative quantum yields and the light intensity showed that the cyclization was a two-photo process. The numbers of AB molecules per cluster (n(AB)/cluster) in Nafion membranes with different AB concentrations and different water contents were calculated. Under the experimental condition two competitive photocyclization mechanisms were suggested by n(AB)/cluster in Nafion membranes, relative quantum yields of the cyclization, and the change of the ratio of benzidine to benzo[c]cinnoline.
