AIMTo investigate the effect of lycopene extracted from tomatoes (LycT) on ultrastructure, glycolytic enzymes, cell proliferation markers and hypoxia during N-Nitrosodiethylamine (NDEA)-induced hepatocarcinogenesis. METHODSFemale BALB/c mice were randomly divided into four groups: The control, NDEA (200 mg NDEA/kg b.w. given i.p.), LycT (5 mg/kg b.w. given orally on alternate days) and LycT + NDEA group. The mRNA and protein expression of various cell proliferation markers (PcNA, cyclin D1, and p21) were assessed by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and enzyme linked immunosorbent assay, respectively. The ultrastructure of hepatic tissue was analyzed using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The enzymatic activity of glycolytic enzymes was estimated using standardized protocols, while glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity level was estimated using a kit obtained from Reckon Diagnostic P. Ltd. (India). RESULTSUncontrolled proliferation in the liver of NDEA (P ≤ 0.001) mice was evident from the high expression of cell-proliferation associated genes (PcNA, cyclin D1, and p21) when compared to control and LycT mice. In addition, enhanced activities of hexokinase, phosphoglucoisomerase, aldolase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and hypoxia-inducible factor-1α were observed in NDEA mice as compared to control (P ≤ 0.001) and LycT (P ≤ 0.001) mice. The alterations in hepatic ultrastructure observed in the NDEA group correlated with the changes in the above parameters. LycT pre-treatment in NDEA-challenged mice ameliorated the investigated pathways disrupted by NDEA treatment. Moreover, hepatic electron micrographs from the LycT + NDEA group showed increased macrophages, apoptotic bodies and well-differentiated hepatocellular carcinoma (Hcc) in comparison to undifferentiated Hcc as observed in the NDEA treated group. cONcLUSIONThis study demonstrates that dietary supplementation with LycT has a multidimensional role in preventing Hcc de

Objective:To study detailed pharmacognostic profile of leaves and stem of careya arborea(c. arborea) Roxb.(Lecthyidaceae),an important medicinal plant in the Indian system of medicine. Methods:Leaf and stem samples of *** were studied by macroscopical,microscopical, physicochemical,phytochemical,fluorescence analysis of powder of the plant and other methods for standardization recommended by ***:Maeroscopieally,the leaves are simple, broadly obovate in shape,acuminate apex with crenate,dentate margin,petioles(0.1-1.8 cm) long. Microscopically,the leaf showed the presence of median large size vascular bundle covered with fibrous bundle sheath,arrangement of xylem in cup shape and presence of cortical vascular bundle, patches of sclerenchyma,phloem fibers in groups and brown pigment containing cells in stem are some of the diagnostic features noted from anatomical *** microscopy of leaf revealed the presence of parenchyma cells,xylem with pitted vessels and epidermis with anisocylic *** investigations also included leaf surface data;quantitative leaf microscopy and fluorescence analysis. Physiochemical parameters such as loss on drying,swelling index,extractive values and ash values were also determined and results showed that total ash of the stem bark was about two times higher than leaf and water soluble extractive value of leaf and stem bark was two limes higher than alcohol soluble extractive *** phytochemical screening showed the presence of triterpenoids, saponins,tannins and ***:The results of the study can serve as a valuable source of information and provide suitable standards for identification of this plant material in future investigations and applications.

Scurvy is caused by prolonged severe dietary deficiency of ascorbic acid, in which the breakdown of intercellular cement substances leads to capillary hemorrhages and defective growth of fibroblasts, osteoblasts and odontoblasts, resulting in impaired synthesis of collagen, osteoid and dentine. It is characterized by hemorrhagic gingivitis, subperiosteal hemorrhages,perifollicular hemorrhages, and frequently petechia hemorrhages(especially on the feet). People with abnormal dietary habits, mental illness or physical disability are prone to develop this disease. Epiphysea separation is known to occur in scurvy but is rarely seen now. Epiphyseal separation from the metaphysis is always through the zone of calcified cartilage,known as "scorbutic lattice", which in the radiographs is represented as "the white line of Frenkel". We report a case of multiple epiphyseal separations in a cerebra palsy child because of vitamin c deficiency. The child was treated with splintage of extremity and nutritiona supplementation. All physeal separation healed completely without any deformity.

AIM： To determine the prevalence of hepatitis B and c virus infections in human immunodeficiency virus （HIV） -positive patients at a tertiary care hospital in New Delhi, India. METHODS： Serum samples from 451 HIV positive patients were analyzed for HBsAg and HcV antibodies during three years （Jan 2003-Dec 2005）. The control group comprised of apparently healthy bone-marrow and renal donors. RESULTS： The study population comprised essentially of heterosexually transmitted HIV infection. The prevalence Fate of HBsAg in this population was 5.3% as compared to 1.4% in apparently healthy donors （P 〈 0.001）. Though prevalence of HcV co-infection （2.43%） was lower than HBV in this group of HIV positive patients, the prevalence was significantly higher （P 〈 0.05） than controls （0.7%）. Triple infection of HIV, HBV and HcV was not detected in any patient. cONcLUSION： Our study shows a significantly high prevalence of hepatitis virus infections in HIV infected patients. Hepatitis viruses in HIV may lead to faster progression to liver cirrhosis and a higher risk of antiretroviral therapy induced hepatotoxicity. Therefore, it would be advisable to detect hepatitis virus coinfections in these patients at the earliest.

Extraction of Soil Boron for Predicting Its Availability to Plants

Field and greenhouse studies were conducted in Prince Edward Island (P. E.I.) on soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.), red clover (Trifolium *** L.), alfalfa (Medieagn saliva L.), and rutabaga (Brassica napobrassica. Mill). Plant B concentrations were compared to soil B extracted by hot-water, 0.05 M HcI, 1.5 M cH3cOOH and 0.01 M cacl2. The r values for extractable soil B vs. plant B were: hot water (0.67). 0.05 M Hcl (0.82), 1.5 M cH3cOOH (0.78) and hot 0.01 M cacl2(0.61). Results of soil B from the 0.05 M Hcl extracts were generally found to give the best correlation and linear regression among the four extractants tested for predicting the availability of B to the plants. Overall, the 0.05 M Hcl proved to be superior to hot water extraction and is recommended for predicting the available B status of the acid soils of P. E. I. The probability of error with 0.05 M HcL is less since it is shaken for a fixed period of time as opposed to subjective error which could be caused in monitoring the boiling time using hot water.

Radio frequency“sutureless”fistulotomy-a new way of treating fistula in anus

AIM: To explore the effect of the classical lay open technique or fistulotomy with the radio frequency surgical device in the treatment of fistula in ***: In our study, the conventional 'lay open'technique, or 'fistulotomy' was performed by employing the radio frequency surgical device as an alternative to the traditional knife and scissors. In a span of 18 months starting from July 1999 to December 2000, 210 cases with fistula in anus of varied types were operated in our nursing home exclusively applying the radio frequency ***: The results of the study were not only encouraging but also were satisfactory. A follow up of the operated patients with radio frequency surgery over a period of 15 months, i.e. from December 2000 to March 2002 was summarized as below: (a) average time taken by the patient to resume routine - 7 days; (b) none of the patient had any interference with the continence; (c) the wounds were found healed within an average time of 47 days; (d) delayed wound healing was noticed only in 7 patients; (e) recurrence/failure rate was reduced to as low as 1.5 ***: This technique has been found superior to the conventional fistulotomy in the sense that the time taken for the whole procedure is reduced to almost half, chances of bleeding are reduced to a minimum and the use of suture material is dispensed with. The procedure can safely be called a "Sutureless fistulotomy".
