Thermal and salinity effects on locomotor performance of Thoropa taophora tadpoles(Anura,cycloramphidae)

It is well known that environmental temperature influences several biological functions of ectotherms,notably in *** high permeability of anuran skin,associated with the effect of elevated environmental temperature,potentiates the dehydration process and this combination may restrict locomotor ***pa taophora is an endemic species from the Atlantic Rainforest whose tadpoles are semiterrestrial and predominantly diurnal,and are found in rocky seashores where they are exposed to sea spray and high *** this study we investigated how temperature and salinity conditions affect the locomotor performance in Thoropa taophora *** also assessed how different osmotic concentrations affect the activity of the metabolic pathways that support muscle *** measured the sprint speed of tadpoles of various sizes at different temperatures and salinities in the *** also measured the activity of the enzymes pyruvate kinase(PK),lactate dehydrogenase(LDH)and citrate synthase(cS)in different temperatures and osmotic concentrations,and calculated the thermal sensitivity and the activity constants for each *** results showed that,in general,sprint speed decreased with increasing temperature and ***,whereas the effect of increased salinity was similar in smaller and larger tadpoles,increased temperature had a higher negative impact on sprint speed of larger tadpoles,thus indicating low thermal sensitivity of small *** and LDH thermal sensitivities and LDH constant of activity decreased as the osmolality *** conclusion,the locomotor capacity of tadpoles was decreased by temperature and salinity,which may be related to a decrease in anaerobic metabolism both in terms of sensitivity and total energy turnover through enzymatic *** discuss the ecological consequences,including the potential impacts on predator escape behavior promoted by changes in metabolism and locomotor performance

chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(cOPD), lung cancer(Lc) and tuberculosis(TB) are common chronic lung diseases that generate a large disease burden and significant health care resource use in china. The aim of this study was to quantify spatial patterns and effects of air pollution and meteorological factors on hospitalization of cOPD, Lc and TB in Beijing. Daily counts of hospitalization for 2010 were obtained from the Beijing Urban Employees Basic Medical Insurance(UEBMI) *** hierarchical Poisson regression models were applied to identify spatial patterns of hospitalization for cOPD, Lc and TB at the district level and explore associations with inhalable particulate matter(aerodynamic diameter counts of hospitalizations for cOPD, Lc and TB respectively, in Beijing in 2010. clusters of high relative risk were in different locations for the three diseases. The effect of relative humidity on cOPD hospitalization was most significant with a relative risk(RR) of 1.070(95%cI: 1.054, 1.086) per one percent increase. For lung cancer hospitalization, exposure to ambient SO2 was associated with a RR of 1.034(95%cI: 1.011, 1.058) per μg m–3 increase. For tuberculosis, the effect of mean temperature was significant with a RR of 1.107(95%cI: 1.038, 1.180) per °c increase. Risk factors and spatial patterns were different for hospitalization of non-infectious and infectious chronic lung disease in Beijing. Even over a short time period(one year), associations were apparent with air pollution and meteorological factors.

The Formation of Nano-Size SiO_2 Thin Film on an Aluminum Plate with Hexamethyldisilazane (HMDSA) and Hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO)

This study is using HMDSA (c6H19NSi2) or HMDSO (c6H18OSi2) vapor into c3H8/air premixed flames to form SiO2 thin film on the surface of an aluminum plate. With the addition of HMDSO or HMDSA to premixed flames, an orange secondary flame or a flame brush appeared and was contributed to the formation of Sio2 particles. Based upon the EDS, XPS and FTIR analysis, it is believed that the synthesized products consist of mainly SiO2 and a small amount of SiO. The pure SiO2 crystal structure, was proved by XRD analysis, which may form from the SiO2 amorphous structure after high temperature (1300c) thermal treatment. The nano-size SiO2 particles, which ranged from 2.5-25 nm, are proved by analysis of the BET and TEM. A 2-D cFD-Rc code with 12 reduced chemical reaction mechanism, based upon the SIMPLER procedure, was successfully employed to predict the flame temperature and both of the SiO2 and SiO concentration profiles. compared with the experimental results, the calculated temperature profiles in the post-flame region are in good agreement with the measured data and observation phenomena.

The origin of uniaxial negative thermal expansion in layered perovskites

Why is it that ABO3 perovskites generally do not exhibit negative thermal expansion(NTE)over a wide temperature range,whereas layered perovskites of the same chemical family often do?It is generally accepted that there are two key ingredients that determine the extent of NTE:the presence of soft phonon modes that drive contraction(have negative Grüneisen parameters);and anisotropic elastic compliance that predisposes the material to the deformations required for NTE along a specific *** difference in thermal expansion properties is surprising since both ABO3 and layered perovskites often possess these ingredients in equal measure in their high-symmetry *** first principles calculations and symmetry analysis,we show that in layered perovskites there is a significant enhancement of elastic anisotropy due to symmetry breaking that results from the combined effect of layering and condensed rotations of oxygen *** feature,unique to layered perovskites of certain symmetry,is what allows uniaxial NTE to persist over a large temperature *** fundamental insight means that symmetry and the elastic tensor can be used as descriptors in high-throughput screening and to direct materials design.

Estimating rock properties using sound signal dominant frequencies during diamond core drilling operations

Laser synthesized nanoparticle alloys of metals with bulk miscibility gaps

The nanoscale alloying of metals with bulk miscibility gaps, Ag-Pt and Ag-Rh, has been investigated using pulsed laser ablation of solids in solution(PLASiS). The procedure was in two steps. In the first step, the suspensions of monometallic nanoparticles were prepared by ablation of a metal rod submerged in water. In the second step,the monometallic suspensions were mixed and alloying was induced by re-irradiation. For the Ag-Pt system, a surface plasmon resonance was observed in the monometallic silver suspension. The surface plasmon resonance vanished in re-irradiated Ag-Pt suspensions, indicating alloying. Selected Area Electron Diffraction(SAED)analysis showed that the nanoparticles had a fcc structure with a lattice constant intermediate between that of monometallic Ag and Pt nanoparticles. First principles theoretical investigations of the mixing energy of Ag-Pt clusters confirm that mixing is favored at around ～1 nm. The same procedure used for Ag-Pt was followed for Ag-Rh. In this system where the two metals present miscibility gaps even in the liquid phase, no evidence of alloying was observed. correspondingly, theoretical investigations found that the mixing energy of Ag-Rh clusters did not favor alloying.
