A robust delay compensator has been developed for a class of uncertain nonlinear systems with an unknown constant input delay.The control law consists of feedback terms based on the integral of past control values and a novel filtered tracking error,capable of compensating for input delays.Suitable Lyapunov-Krasovskii functionals are used to prove global uniformly ultimately bounded(GUUB)tracking,provided certain sufficient gain conditions,dependent on the bound of the delay,are satisfied.Simulation results illustrate the performance and robustness of the controller for different values of input delay.

In this paper, adaptive linear quadratic regulator(LQR) is proposed for continuous-time systems with uncertain dynamics. The dynamic state-feedback controller uses inputoutput data along the system trajectory to continuously adapt and converge to the optimal controller. The result differs from previous results in that the adaptive optimal controller is designed without the knowledge of the system dynamics and an initial stabilizing policy. Further, the controller is updated continuously using input-output data, as opposed to the commonly used switched/intermittent updates which can potentially lead to stability issues. An online state derivative estimator facilitates the design of a model-free controller. Gradient-based update laws are developed for online estimation of the optimal gain. Uniform exponential stability of the closed-loop system is established using the Lyapunov-based analysis, and a simulation example is provided to validate the theoretical contribution.

Androgen doping in power sports is undeniably rampant worldwide. There is strong evidence that androgen administration in men increases skeletal muscle mass, maximal voluntary strength and muscle power. However, we do not have good experimental evidence to support the presumption that androgen administration improves physical function or athletic performance. Androgens do not increase specific force or whole body endurance measures. The anabolic effects of testosterone on the skeletal muscle are mediated through androgen receptor signaling. Testosterone promotes myogenic differentiation of multipotent mesenchymal stem cells and inhibits their differentiation into the adipogenic lineage. Testosterone binding to androgen receptor induces a conformational change in androgen receptor protein, causing it to associate with beta-catenin and TCF-4 and activate downstream Wnt target genes thus promoting myogenic differentiation. The adverse effects of androgens among athletes and recreational bodybuilders are under reported and include acne, deleterious changes in the cardiovascular risk factors, including a marked decrease in plasma high-density lipoproteins （HDL） cholesterol level, suppression of spermatogenesis resulting in infertility, increase in liver enzymes, hepatic neoplasms, mood and behavioral disturbances, and long term suppression of the endogenous hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. Androgens are often used in combination with other drugs which may have serious adverse events of their own. In spite of effective methods for detecting androgen doping, the policies for screening of athletes are highly variable in different countries and organizations and even existing policies are not uniformly enforced.

The small intestine is an uncommon site of gastro-intestinal(GI)bleeding;however it is the commonest cause of obscure GI bleeding.It may require multiple blood transfusions,diagnostic procedures and repeated hospitalizations.Angiodysplasia is the commonest cause of obscure GI bleeding,particularly in the elderly.Inflammatory lesions and tumours are the usual causes of small intestinal bleeding in younger patients.Capsule endoscopy and deep enteroscopy have improved our ability to investigate small bowel bleeds.Deep enteroscopy has also an added advantage of therapeutic potential.Computed tomography is helpful in identifying extra-intestinal lesions.In cases of difficult diagnosis,surgery and intra-operative enteroscopy can help with diagnosis and management.The treatment is dependent upon the aetiology of the bleed.An overt bleed requires aggressive resuscitation and immediate localisation of the lesion for institution of appropriate therapy.Small bowel bleeding can be managed by conservative,radiological,pharmacological,endoscopic and surgical methods,depending upon indications,expertise and availability.Some patients,especially those with multiple vascular lesions,can re-bleed even after appropriate treatment and pose difficult challenge to the treating physician.

Adaptive critic(AC) based controllers are typically discrete and/or yield a uniformly ultimately bounded stability result because of the presence of disturbances and unknown approximation errors.A continuous-time AC controller is developed that yields asymptotic tracking of a class of uncertain nonlinear systems with bounded disturbances.The proposed AC-based controller consists of two neural networks(NNs)-an action NN,also called the actor,which approximates the plant dynamics and generates appropriate control actions;and a critic NN,which evaluates the performance of the actor based on some performance index.The reinforcement signal from the critic is used to develop a composite weight tuning law for the action NN based on Lyapunov stability analysis.A recently developed robust feedback technique,robust integral of the sign of the error(RISE),is used in conjunction with the feedforward action neural network to yield a semiglobal asymptotic result.Experimental results are provided that illustrate the performance of the developed controller.

Modern Artificial Intelligence(AI)systems largely rely on advanced algorithms,including machine learning techniques such as deep learning.The research community has invested significant efforts in understanding these algorithms,optimally tuning them,and improving their performance,but it has mostly neglected the security facet of the problem.Recent attacks and exploits demonstrated that machine learning‐based algorithms are susceptible to attacks targeting computer systems,including backdoors,hardware Trojans and fault attacks,but are also susceptible to a range of attacks specifically targeting them,such as adversarial input perturbations.

BACKGROUND Pancreatitis with infected necrosis is a severe complication of acute pancreatitis and carries with it high rates of morbidity and mortality. The management of infected pancreatic necrosis alongside concomitant colorectal cancer has never been described in literature.CASE SUMMARY A 77 years old gentleman presented to the Emergency Department of our hospital complaining of ongoing abdominal pain for 8 h. The patient had clinical features of pancreatitis with a raised lipase of 3810 U/L, A computed tomography(CT) abdomen confirmed pancreatitis with extensive peri-pancreatic edema. During the course of his admission, the patient had persistent high fevers and delirium thought secondary to infected necrosis, prompting the commencement of broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy with Piperacillin/Tazobactam. Subsequent CT abdomen confirmed extensive pancreatic necrosis(over 70%). Patient was managed with supportive therapy,nutritional support and gut rest initially and improved over the course of his admission and was discharged 42 d post admission. He represented 24 d following his discharge with fever and chills and a repeat CT abdomen scan noted gas bubbles within the necrotic pancreatic tissue thereby confirming infected necrotic pancreatitis. This CT scan also revealed asymmetric thickening of the rectal wall suspicious for malignancy. A rectal cancer was confirmed on flexible sigmoidoscopy. The patient underwent two endoscopic necrosectomies and was treated with intravenous antibiotics and was discharged after 28 d.Within 1 wk post discharge, the patient commenced a course of neoadjuvant radiotherapy and subsequently underwent concomitant chemotherapy prior to undergoing a successful Hartmann's procedure for treatment of his colorectal cancer.CONCLUSION This case highlights the efficacy of endoscopic necrosectomy, early enteral feeding and targeted antibiotic therapy for timely management of infected necrotic pancreatitis.
