Electrical contact materials are generally Ag-or Cu-based composites and play a critical role in ensuring the reliability and efficiency of electrical equipments and electronic *** MAX(M is an early transition metal,A is an element from III or IV main groups,and X is carbon or/and nitrogen)phase ceramics display a unique combination of properties and may serve as an ideal reinforcement phase for electrical contact *** biological materials evolved in nature generally exhibit three-dimensional(3D)interpenetrating-phase architectures,which may offer useful inspiration for the architectural design of electrical contact ***,a series of bi-continuous Ag-Ti_(3)SiC_(2) MAX phase composites with high ceramic contents exceeding 50 vol.%and having micron-and ultrafine-scaled 3D interpenetrating-phase architectures,wherein both constituents were continuous and mutually interspersed,were exploited by pressureless infiltration of Ag melt into partially sintered Ti_(3)SiC_(2) *** mechanical and electrical properties as well as the friction and wear performance of the composites were investigated and revealed to be closely dependent on the ceramic contents and characteristic structural *** composites exhibited a good combination of properties with high hardness over 2.3 GPa,high flexural strength exceeding 530 MPa,decent fracture toughness over 10 MPa·m^(1/2),and good wear resistance with low wear rate at an order of 10^(-5)mm^(3)/(N·m),which were much superior compared to the counterparts made by powder metallurgy *** particular,the hardness,electrical conductivity,strength,and fracture toughness of the composites demonstrated a simultaneous improvement as the structure was refined from micron-to ultrafine-scales at equivalent ceramic *** good combination of properties along with the facile processing route makes the Ag-Ti_(3)SiC_(2)3D interpenetrating-phase composites appealing for electrical contact applicatio

Fatigue strength of Al7075 notched plates based on the local SED averaged over a control volume

When pointed V-notches weaken structural components, local stresses are singular and their intensities are expressed in terms of the notch stress intensity factors （NSIFs）. These parameters have been widely used for fatigue assessments of welded struc- tures under high cycle fatigue and sharp notches in plates made of brittle materials subjected to static loading. Fine meshes are required to capture the asymptotic stress distributions ahead of the notch tip and evaluate the relevant NSIFs. On the other hand, when the aim is to determine the local Strain Energy Density （SED） averaged in a control volume embracing the point of stress singularity, refined meshes are, not at all, necessary. The SED can be evaluated from nodal displacements and regular coarse meshes provide accurate values for the averaged local SED. In the present contribution, the link between the SED and the NSIFs is discussed by considering some typical welded joints and sharp V-notches. The procedure based on the SED has been also proofed to be useful for determining theoretical stress concentration factors of blunt notches and holes. In the second part of this work an application of the strain energy density to the fatigue assessment of A17075 notched plates is presented. The experimental data are taken from the recent literature and refer to notched specimens subjected to different shot peening treatments aimed to increase the notch fatigue strength with respect to the parent material.

Inverse design of truss lattice materials with superior buckling resistance

Manipulating the architecture of materials to achieve optimal combinations of properties(inverse design)has always been the dream of materials scientists and *** represent an efficient way to obtain lightweight yet strong materials,providing a high degree of *** massive research has been done on lattice architectures,the inverse design problem of complex phenomena(such as structural instability)has remained *** deep neural network and genetic algorithm,we provide a machine-learning-based approach to inverse-design non-uniformly assembled *** basic building blocks,our approach allows us to independently control the geometry and topology of periodic and aperiodic *** an example,we inverse-design lattice architectures with superior buckling performance,outperforming traditional reinforced grid-like and bio-inspired lattices by~30–90%and 10–30%,*** results provide insights into the buckling behavior of beam-based lattices,opening an avenue for possible applications in modern structures and infrastructures.

On three-dimensional stress analysis of periodic notched plates under tension

By using the finite element method,three-dimensional models of a number of periodic blunt and sharp notches subjected to tension loading are *** aim of this research is to investigate the thickness effect on the location of maximum stress and notch stress intensity factor(NSIF)of corresponding blunt and sharp periodic notches *** this aim,different number of periodic notches as well as different notch opening angles are *** for two-dimensional plates weakened by periodic notches some results are available in the literature,this paper first faces the problem of three-dimensional cases.A total of about 100 geometrical configurations are *** is found that,the effect of plate thickness of periodic notched components can be characterized by the relative value with respect to the depth of the notch(H/t).For the blunt periodic notches with relatively higher values of H/t ratio,the value of the maximum tensile stress is located near the free *** the contrary for lower values of H/t,it is placed at the middle *** same behaviour is observed for sharp periodic notches in terms of notch stress intensity factors.

Local Strain Energy Density Applied to Bainitic Functionally Graded Steels Plates Under Mixed-Mode(Ⅰ+Ⅱ) Loading

In this paper, the averaged value of the strain energy density （SED） over a control volume is used to predict the critical load of V-notched specimens made of functionally graded steels （FGSs） under mixed-mode loading. The studied FGSs contain ferritic and austenite phases in addition to bainitic layer produced by electroslag remelting. The mechanism- based strain gradient plasticity theory is used to determine the flow stress （yield stress or ultimate stress） of each layer. The Young＇s modulus and the Poisson＇s ratio have been assumed to be constant, while other mechanical properties vary exponentially along the specimen width. The control volume is centered in relation to the maximum principal stress present on the notch edge and assumes a crescent shape. The points belonging to the volume perimeter are obtained numerically. In the present contribution, the effects of notch radius and notch depth on the SED and the critical load are studied. The notch radius varies from 0.2 to 2.0 mm, and the notch depth varies from 5 to 7 ram. By using the SED approach and finite element simulations, the critical load is determined, and the obtained results show a sound agreement with the experimental results.

A New Analytical Expression for the Relationship Between the Charpy Impact Energy and Notch Tip Position for Functionally Graded Steels

The effect of the distance between the notch tip and the position of the middle phase in the FGSs on the Charpy impact energy is investigated in the present paper. The results show that when the notch apex is close to the middle layer, the Charpy impact energy reaches its maximum value. This is due to the increment of the absorbed energy by plastic deformation ahead of the notch tip. On the other hand, when the notch tip is far from the middle layer, the Charpy impact energy strongly decreases. Another fundamental motivation of the present work is that for crack arrester configuration, no accurate mathematical or analytical modelling is available up to now. By considering the relationship between the Charpy impact energy and the plastic volume size, a new theoretical model has been developed to link the Charpy impact energy with the distance from the notch apex to the middle phase. This model is a simplified one and the effect of different shapes of the layers and the effect of microstructureon the mechanical properties and plastic region size will be considered in further investigation. The results of the new developed closed form expression show a sound agreement with some recent experimental results taken from the literature.

Thulium fiber laser lithotripsy:Is it living up to the hype?

Objective:The holmium:yttrium-aluminium-garnet laser(Ho:YAG)has been the gold standard for laser lithotripsy over the last three *** demonstrating good in vitro efficacy,the thulium fiber laser(TFL)has been recently released in the market and the initial clinical results are *** article aims to review the main technology differences between the Ho:YAG laser and the TFL,discuss the initial clinical results with the TFL as well as the optimal settings for TFL ***:We reviewed the literature focusing on the technological aspects of the Ho:YAG laser and TFL as well as the results of in vitro and in vivo studies comparing both ***:In vitro studies show a technical superiority of TFL compared to the Ho:YAG laser and encouraging results have been demonstrated in clinical ***,as TFL is a new technology,limited studies are currently available,and the optimal settings for lithotripsy are not yet ***:TFL has the potential to be an alternative to the Ho:YAG laser,but more reports are still needed to determine the optimal laser for lithotripsy of urinary tract stones when considering all parameters including effectiveness,safety,and costs.

Effect of graphene oxide on the corrosion,mechanical and biological properties of Mg-based nanocomposite

This study investigates the effect of graphene oxide(GO)on the mechanical and corrosion behavior,antibacterial performance,and cell response of Mg–Zn–Mn(MZM)***/GO nanocomposites with different amounts of GO(i.e.,0.5 wt%,1.0 wt%,and1.5 wt%)were fabricated by the semi-powder metallurgy *** influence of GO on the MZM nanocomposite was analyzed through the hardness,compressive,corrosion,antibacterial,and cytotoxicity *** experimental results showed that,with the increase in the amount of GO(0.5 wt%and 1.5 wt%),the hardness value,compressive strength,and antibacterial performance of the MZM nanocomposite increased,whereas the cell viability and osteogenesis level decreased after the addition of 1.5 wt%***,the electrochemical examination results showed that the corrosion behavior of the MZM alloy was significantly enhanced after encapsulation in 0.5 wt%*** summary,MZM nanocomposites reinforced with GO can be used for implant applications because of their antibacterial performance and mechanical property.

The ultra-sonication of minerals in swine feed

A sample preparation method based on ultrasound assisted-extraction （UAE） of Ca, Mg and P from swine feed has been described. The experiment was performed to cover the variables influencing the sonication process and, the method validation using standard reference material. Final solutions obtained upon sonication were analyzed by flame atomic absorption spectrometry （for Ca and Mg） and by UV-vis spectrophotometry （for P）. The best conditions for metal extraction were as follows： sample mass： 100 mg in 20 mL 0.10 mol/L HCI, a particle size：〈60 lam, sonication time： 5 cycles of 10 s and ultrasound power： 102 W. The UAE method was applied in digestibility assays in different piglet feeds and their results showed that it is highly comparable （P 〉 0.05） to the other methods used for such purposes, as block digestion, and offered a Ca, Mg and P method of quantification limit of 10.6, 12.4 and 14 mg/kg, respectively. The major advantages of the UAE method compared to other methods are the high treatment rate, low reagent usage in the extracts and, it does not generate toxic residues that might negatively affect human health and the environment, accompanied by good precision and accuracy.

On the evaluation of ALD TiO_(2),ZrO_(2) and HfO_(2) coatings on corrosion and cytotoxicity performances

Magnesium alloys have been widely studied as materials for temporary implants,but their use has been limited by their corrosion ***,coatings have been proven to provide an effective *** only little explored in the field,Atomic Layer Deposition(ALD)stands out as a coating technology due to the outstanding film conformality and density ***,we provide first insights into the corrosion behavior and the induced biological response of 100 nm thick ALD TiO_(2),HfO_(2)and ZrO_(2)coatings on AZ31 alloy by means of potentiodynamic polarization curves,electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS),hydrogen evolution and MTS colorimetric assay with L929 *** three coatings improve the corrosion behavior and cytotoxicity of the ***,HfO_(2)coatings were characterized by the highest corrosion resistance and cell viability,slightly higher than those of ZrO_(2)***_(2)was characterized by the lowest corrosion improvements and,though generally considered a biocompatible coating,was found to not meet the demands for cellular applications(it was characterized by grade 3 cytotoxicity after 5 days of culture).These results reveal a strong link between biocompatibility and corrosion resistance and entail the need of taking the latter into consideration in the choice of a biocompatible coating to protect degradable Mg-based alloys.
