QTL Analysis for Grain Iron and Zinc Concentrations in Two O. nivara Derived Backcross Populations

Identification of quantitative trait loci （QTLs） for grain mineral elements can assist in faster and more precise development of micronutrient dense rice varieties through marker-assisted breeding. In the present study, QTLs were mapped for Fe and Zn concentrations in two BC2F3 mapping populations derived from the crosses of O. sativa cv Swarna with two different accessions of O. nivara. In all, 10 and 8 QTLs were identified for grain Fe and Zn concentrations in population 1, and 7 and 5 QTLs were identified in population 2, respectively. Eighty percent of the QTLs detected in both populations were derived from O. nivara. Five QTLs for Fe and three QTLs for Zn explained more than 15% phenotypic variance either in interval or composite interval mapping. The locations of O. nivara derived QTLs such as qFe2.1, qFe3.1, qFe8.2 and qZn12.1 were consistently identified in both the populations. Epistatic interaction was observed only between RM106 and RM6 on chromosome 2 and between RM22 and RM7 on chromosome 3 for Fe concentration in population 1. Sixteen candidate genes for metal homeostasis were found to co-locate with 10 QTLs for Fe and Zn concentrations in both the populations. Most of the Fe and Zn QTLs were found to co-locate with QTLs for grain yield and grain quality traits. Some of the major effect QTLs identified can be used to improve rice grain Fe and Zn concentrations.

Recurrence of colon cancer still remains a major issue which affects nearly 50% of patients treated by conventional therapeutics. Although the underlying causative factor(s) is not fully understood, development of drug-resistance has been associated with induction of cancer stem or stem-like cells (CSCs) which constitute a small sub-population of tumor cells known to be highly resistant to chemotherapy. In fact, the discovery of CSCs in a variety of tumors (including colon cancer) has changed the view of carcinogenesis and therapeutic strategies. Emerging reports have indicated that to improve patient outcomes, conventional anticancer therapies should be replaced with specifi c approaches targeting CSCs. Thus, therapeutic strategies that specifically target CSCs are being sought to reduce the risk of relapse and metastasis. In order to specifi cally target colon CSCs (while sparing somatic intestinal stem cells), it is critical to identify unique deregulated pathways responsible for self-renewal of CSCs and colon cancer recurrence. Colon CSCs present a unique opportunity to better understand the biology of solid tumors. Thus, a better understanding of the clinical signs and symptoms of colon cancer patients (under-going surgery or chemotherapy) during perioperative periods, along with the underlying regulatory events affecting the stem/progenitor cell self-renewal and differentiation of colon epithelial cells, is of immense importance. In this review we discuss the implication of clinical factors and the emerging role of CSCs during recurrence of colon cancer along with the development of new therapeutic strategies involving the use of natural agents.

We propose and analyze mathematical models to study the dynamics of smoking behavior under the influence of educational programs and also individual＇s determination to quit smoking. We establish the positivity and boundedness of the solutions in a biologically feasible region. A threshold value responsible for persistence of smoking is obtained and stability analysis on models is performed. We find that determination alone is not enough to eradicate smoking but it can reduce the prevalence of smoker population. Whereas the increase in education can possibly eradicate it. We performed numerical simulation for representative set of parameters to verify and discuss results obtained analytically.

Advent of additive manufacturing in biomedical field has nurtured fabrication of complex,customizable and reproducible orthopaedic ***-by-layer deposition of biodegradable polymer employed in development of porous orthopaedic screws promises gradual dissolution and complete metabolic resorption thereby overcoming the limitations of conventional metallic *** the present study,screws with different pore sizes(916×918μm to 254×146μm)were 3D printed at 200μm layer height by varying printing parameters such as print speed,fill density and travel speed to augment the bone ***-CT analysis and scanning electron micrographs of screws with 45%fill density confirmed porous interconnections(40.1%)and optimal pore size(259×207×200μm)without compromising the mechanical strength(24.58±1.36 MPa).Due to the open pore structure,the 3D printed screws showed increased weight gain due to the deposition of calcium when incubated in simulated body ***-like cells attached on screw and infiltrated into the pores over 14 days of in vitro ***,the screws also supported greater human mesenchymal stem cell adhesion,proliferation and mineralized matrix synthesis over a period of 21 days in vitro culture as compared to non-porous *** porous screws showed significantly increased vascularization in a rat subcutaneous implantation as compared to control *** screws produced by additive manufacturing may promote better osteointegration due to enhanced mineralization and vascularization.

Polycrystalline sample of Ba5HoTi3V7O30 was prepared using solid-state reaction technique. X-ray structural analysis indicated a single-phase formation with orthorhombic structure. Microstructural study by SEM showed non-uniform distribution of grains over the surface of the sample. Impedance and modulus spectroscopy studies were carried out, as functions of frequency (42 Hz - 5 MHz) and temperature (RT-773K). The Nyquist plots clearly showed the presence of both bulk and grain boundary effect in the compound. Electrical phenomena in the material can appropriately be modeled in terms of an equivalent circuit with R, C and CPE in parallel. The fitting procedure used here allows us to determine the value of R and C with good precision. Here R2 and R3 correspond to the resistance contributed from the grain boundary and bulk, respectively. C1 and C2 correspond to the capacitance contributed from the grain boundary and bulk, respectively. The real part of electrical modulus shows that the material is highly capacitive. The asymmetric peak of the imaginary part of electric modulus M″, predicts a non Debye type relaxation. The activation energy of the compound (calculated both from impedance and modulus spectrum) is same, and hence the relaxation process may be attributed to the same type of charge carriers.

In this study,5μmol·L^(-1)abscisic acid(ABA)and gibberellic acid(GA3)were used to study the effect of both growth regulators on the morphological parameters and pigment composition of Andrographis *** growth regulators were applied by means of foliar spray during morning *** treatment inhibited the growth of the stem and internodal length when compared with control,whereas GA3 treatment increased the plant height and internodal *** total number of leaves per plant decreased in the ABA-treated plants,but GA3 treatment increased the total number of leaves when compared with the *** growth regulators(ABA and GA3)showed increased leaf *** and GA3 treatments slightly decreased the total root growth at all the stages of *** growth regulator treatments increased the whole plant fresh and dry weight at all stages of *** enhanced the fresh and dry weight to a larger extent when compared with *** increase in the total chlorophyll content was recorded in ABA and GA3 *** chlorophyll-a,chlorophyll-b,and carotenoids were increased by ABA and GA3 treatments when compared with the control *** xanthophylls and anthocyanin content were increased with ABA and GA3 treatments in *** plants.

Management of Infertility in Endometriosis by Operative Laparoscopy and Medical Therapy—Practiced at 3 Different Centres, from September 2005 to October 2007

This is a prospective study conducted over a period of 2 years and 1 month (from September 2005 to October 2007). 60/117 (52.17%) patients who had laparoscopy for infertility at GMH had endometriosis. 60 patients operated for endometriosis at SHC and 40 patients managed at Anu Infertility Centre during the same period are also included in this study. All the 60 patients underwent operative laparoscopy for endometriosis. Adhesiolysis, electrocautery of surface endometriosis of the ovary, enucleation of endometriotic cyst, mobilization of ovary from uterus and pouch of Douglas and restoration of normal anatomy were carried out. Treatment interventions: Therapeutic hysteroscopy and laparoscopy, medical treatment by various ovulation induction protocols, monitoring by follicular sonography followed by pregnancy management were done in these women. Results: GMH—Seventeen 17 out of 18 coming for follow up conceived, 14 following ovulation induction and 3 after COH + IUI, by one year at GMH. SHC—14 out of 18 patients coming for follow up at the end of one year conceived, following ovulation induction 6, COH + IUI-3, IVF-3 and spontaneous 2. ANU—Out of 11 conceptions, COH + IUI resulted in 6, IVF in 4, spontaneous in 1—by one year. Pregnancy outcome: GMH: Ten delivered, Triplets in one, missed abortion two, emergency laparotomy in one. Pregnancy is continuing in 4. SHC: Eight patients delivered. Pregnancy is continuing in 4 patients. Ectopic-1, missed abortion-1. ANU: Five patients delivered. Pregnancy is continuing in 3 women, missed abortion-2, second trimester abruption-1. Discussion: The conception rate was 50% at the end of 6 months follow up
