Soil Salinity Changes in the Jordan Valley Potentially Threaten Sustainable Irrigated Agriculture

The integrated effect of irrigation and agricultural practices on soil salinity in the Jordan Valley （JV）, where over 60% of Jordan＇s agricultural produce is grown, was investigated in this study during 2009-2010. Due to the differences in agricultural operations, cropping patterns, irrigation management, and weather conditions, 206 top- and sub-soil samples were taken every 1 to 3 km from representative farms along a north-south （N-S） transect with 1 to 2 km lateral extents. Soil electrical conductivity of saturated extract （ECse）, Ca, Mg, K, Na, CI, and Na adsorption ratio （SAR） were determined in saturated paste extracts. Results indicated that about 63% of soils in the JV are indeed saline, out of which almost 46% are moderately to strongly saline. along the N-S transect of the JV, ECse increased from 4.5 to 14.1 dS m-1 in top-soil samples. Similar increase was observed for the sub-soil samples. The major chemical components of soil salinity; i.e., Ca, Mg, and C1, also showed a similar increase along the N-S transect of the valley. Moreover, compared to previous field sampling, results showed that changes in soil salinity in the JV were dramatic. In addition, it was found that C1 imposed an existing and potential threat to sensitive crops in 60% of the soils in the JV, where C1 concentrations were greater than 710 mg L-1. Under the prevalent arid Mediterranean conditions, improving the management of .irrigation water, crops, and nutrient inputs and increasing water and fertilizer use efficiencies should be indispensable to conserve and sustain the already fragile agricultural soils in the JV.

Over the course of the last 10 years, research on Mobile Ad Hoc Networks has witnessed high levels of focus. Because of this field being a relatively new topic, most researchers have focused on using simulation as the first choice for performance measurement and evaluation. In order to contribute to the credibility and reliability of research results on Ad Hoc networks, this paper addresses the issue of choosing parameter values that are used as input for simulators used in such experiments by surveying a sample of recently published papers on Ad Hoc Networks. Results show that in the majority of revised papers, the simulation environment is not carefully planned as reflected by the diversity and quality of parameters used.

The rapid advancement in technology and the increased number of web applications with very short turnaround time caused an increased need for protection from vulnerabilities that grew due to decision makers overlooking the need to be protected from attackers or software developers lacking the skills and experience in writing secure code. Structured Query Language (SQL) Injection, cross-site scripting (XSS), Distributed Denial of service (DDos) and suspicious user behaviour are some of the common types of vulnerabilities in web applications by which the attacker can disclose the web application sensitive information such as credit card numbers and other confidential information. This paper proposes a framework for the detection and prevention of web threats (WTDPF) which is based on preventing the attacker from gaining access to confidential data by studying his behavior during the action of attack and taking preventive measures to reduce the risks of the attack and as well reduce the consequences of such malicious action. The framework consists of phases which begin with the input checking phase, signature based action component phase, alert and response phases. Additionally, the framework has a logging functionality to store and keep track of any action taking place and as well preserving information about the attacker IP address, date and time of the attack, type of the attack, and the mechanism the attacker used. Moreover, we provide experimental results for different kinds of attacks, and we illustrate the success of the proposed framework for dealing with and preventing malicious actions.

Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET) is a wireless network consisting of mobile devices (laptops, smart phones, etc.) that move and communicate with each other without the use of any existing network infrastructure or centralized server to avoid collisions which have negative effects on the performance of the network. Access to the shared media is controlled by a Backoff algorithm that is a part of the Media Access Protocol. In this paper, we improve the History Based Probabilistic Backoff (HPPB) algorithm by modifying the increment/decrement behavior of the Contention Window to introduce History Based Increment Backoff (HBIB) algorithm which outperforms HBPB in terms of throughput and end-to-end delay with various numbers of nodes and different traffic loads.

The hex-cell is one of the interconnection networks used for parallel systems. The main idea of the hex-cell is that there are hexagon cells that construct the network;each one of those cells has six nodes. The performance of the network is affected by many factors one of the factors as load balancing. Until the moment of writing of this paper, there is no load balancing algorithm for this network. The proposed algorithm for dynamic load balancing on hex-cell is based on Tree Walking algorithm (TWA) for load balancing on tree interconnection network and the ring all to all broadcast.

Automatic Test Data Generation for Java Card Applications Using Genetic algorithm

The main objective of software testing is to have the highest likelihood of finding the most faults with a minimum amount of time and effort. Genetic algorithm (GA) has been successfully used by researchers in software testing to automatically generate test data. In this paper, a GA is applied using branch coverage criterion to generate the least possible set of test data to test JSC applications. Results show that applying GA achieves better performance in terms of average number of test data?generations, execution time, and percentage of branch coverage.
